THE BIG REVEAL
ABOUT
KIM HEE WOO
(LEE JOON GI)
AND
AGAIN MY LIFE
IN
SBS’ OFFICIAL TEASER
|
Would it surprise you to learn that the story in the SBS drama,
Again My Life has deviated from the manhwa? The broadcasting
organization has drummed up more excitement among K-Drama lovers with the release
of its official trailer for Again My Life on 18 March. The promotional
video surprises. As the riveting story unfolds, it has become apparent that
some aspects of the drama have unexpectedly diverged from the manhwa. The drama,
which is helmed by Director Han Chul Soo, speaks of Kim Hee Woo, a
hot-headed and reckless prosecutor portrayed by Lee Joon Gi. The unfortunate
man is murdered by the lackeys of Jo Tae Sup, a powerful and evil
politician, played by Lee Kyung Young. The drama, expected to be a masterpiece, premieres on 8 April 2022. THE SPECTACULAR FALLING SCENE IN AGAIN MY LIFE THE FALL OF KIM HEE WOO FROM A SKYSCRAPPER In the
Big Reveal of the official trailer, one is startled to realise that Kim
Hee Woo did not fall into the sea in his previous life. The obsessive
prosecutor plummets from a tall building one night; he is probably thrown
from the top of the building by his assassins. A contrived accident which is
most efficient. The
scene is chilling. One is shocked, angry and sad to watch Kim Hee Woo’s
brutal murder. He is cut down in the prime of his life, which is a real
tragedy. Prosecutor Kim Hee Woo has a mountain of evidence to convict Jo
Tae Sup, the personification of evil. The powerful politician walks free
while the prosecutor is dead. There is probably a knot in every viewer’s
stomach. But, Kim
Hee Woo is not blameless; he is a reckless and naïve prosecutor who had
put his life on the line for the prosecution of Jo Tae Sup. One scene
shows the badly pummelled Kim Hee Woo in a daze. He realises too late
that he had been too presumptuous to think that a mere prosecutor like himself could take
down such a powerful politician. The murder
case symbolises much more than the murder of an upright and honest
prosecutor. Instead, it symbolises how murder can be easily exploited by the
politically powerful to hide their evil deeds. Most likely, the case is
injected with a lot of lies and deceptions to defame, malign and vilify the
dead Kim Hee Woo. It is wicked to say it. That scene of the fall of the
prosecutor to his death from the skyscraper, which is shown in slow motion, is spectacular, beautiful and artistic. Lee Joon Gi, The King of Action, has outdone himself again by making the scene thrilling and action packed; he has pulled off another dangerous stunt without a stuntman. One can’t help but be in awe of his amazing physicality, and also the creativity and hard work put into the terrific and thrilling scene by the Again My Life team, particularly Director Han Chul Soo and Action Director Lee Soo Min. THE GORGEOUS ATTIRE OF THE LADY IN RED Kim Hee Woo meets The Lady In Red, his saviour. The supposed Grim
Reaper is not what she is perceived to be. To the astonishment and
probably, the delight of everyone, the strange red-lipped Lady (Han Ji
Hyun) played by Cha Joo Young, who gives a new lease on life to the
prosecutor, is not dressed in depressing black but in shocking, joyous Red.
The red blouse with long, billowy sleeves is matched with a pair of red pants.
A Vision (of loveliness) in Red - Kudos to the Wardrobe Department. The exciting
interpretation is like a breath of fresh air to the drama. THE STERLING PERFORMANCE OF LEE JOON GI In one scene, Kim Hee Woo is badly bashed up and
defeated in a fight. The bewildered prosecutor regrets his mistake and
miscalculation too late. It is a fallacy to think that a lone prosecutor could perform
miracles without the help of an army of talented and loyal allies. The supportive Lady in Red listens in sympathy to Kim Hee Woo, as he recounts his experience. His faltering voice betrays his vulnerability, distress, regret and ebbing confidence as a result of his misjudgement. Lee Joon Gi's portrayal of a defeated man, whose staggering naivete led to his downfall, is particularly moving. A CRIMINAL JUSTICE DRAMA NOT A REVENGE DRAMA To the
relief of K-drama lovers, Again My Life is not a personal revenge
drama. When asked if he is given another shot at life, what would he do?
Would his goal be the same? Kim Hee Woo tells the Lady in Red
that punishing Jo Tae Sup is something he is meant to do or born to do.
In the Past, he hunted down the wicked politician because of his sense of
justice. His method of dealing with the politician was tragically misplaced. The hunt exposed him to the
dark and evil side of humanity. When Kim
Hee Woo returns to the Past, his life would be irrevocably changed. His
motivation will still be the same; he is driven by his duty to ensure Jo
Tae Sup does not pervert the course of justice. His mission is not a
personal revenge mission. He is still obsessed with justice and he doesn’t
want to fritter his life away on something that is unmeaningful as personal
revenge. Again My
Life is a
drama about Criminal Justice - Crime and Punishment. THE CONTROL OVER THE CHUNHA CONGLOMERATE There is a shocking twist in the tale – the one you never saw coming. Kim Hee Woo’s mentor, the real estate tycoon, Woo Yung Soo played by Lee Soon Jae, asks him if he wants to assume control over Chunha. ‘So, you want Chunha to be under your thumb?’ Kim Hee Woo answers, ‘Because I can stop Jo Tae Sup’. That’s the only way to stop Jo Tae Sup from usurping the ownership of the huge Chunha conglomerate and assuming absolute power over the country. You shiver at his answer. How will Kim Hee Woo take over
the Chunha conglomerate? We are reminded of the advice given by the Lady in Red. ‘You
can’t catch the devil by being the lesser evil.’ Does it mean he must choose to be the bigger evil? Would he be compelled to marry Kim Hee Ah, the heiress
of Chunha played by Kim Ji Eun to gain control of it? The End Justifies the Means. The
good outcome, that is, the punishment of Jo Tae Sup, excuses any
wrongs committed to attain it. Or possibly, Kim Hee Woo collaborates with Kim Hee Ah
to stop Jo Tae Sup from seizing the conglomerate. In another scene, the powerful Jo Tae Sup threatens the President of Korea. ‘This is how you’re supposed to do politics. In this country, Jo Tae Sup comes first. After that, comes the President.’ Imagine the fight between Kim Hee Woo, the Prosecutor (The
power behind the powerful Chunha conglomerate), and Jo Tae Sup, (The
power behind the Korean President). Shall we call it The Battle of The
Titans? THE RADICALLY CHANGED PROSECUTOR Kim Hee Woo realises that to destroy evil, he needs to plan and
strategize. The devil is in the details. He cannot depend on luck. He makes
vast physical and mental improvements by reading books, immersing himself in martial
arts training, and so on and so forth. A scene shows the look of determination on Kim Hee Woo's face. His eyes
are intense and penetrating. He’s staring coldly ahead of him. Does he have ‘murder’
on his mind? It makes one’s hair stand on end. The ‘born-again’ prosecutor plans to destroy evil bit by bit
and step by step unlike before when he was too ambitious. He would probably start
uprooting evil from the bottom up. One fundamental question is, ‘Did Kim Hee Woo come back as a teenager or adult?’ Many K-Drama enthusiasts seem to think he has returned
as a university student in his twenties. If that is so, how would the meeting
of Kim Hee Woo and Kim Han Mi, the daughter of Kim Seok Hoon,
be explained? They met in High School. Perhaps the story opens with him as a first year undergraduate, and his teenage years are recounted in his
backstory. SYMBOLISMS A BRIDGE Before Kim Hee Woo was murdered, he fought his assassins
on a pedestrian overhead bridge. A bridge symbolises transition, change and
communication with God. The bridge takes him from one place to the next, from
Life to Death and then Life again. When in another realm, he throws off the
past and makes a fresh start. THE COLOUR RED The Lady in Red - she’s wearing all red. The carpet leading up
to the President’s office is red. The office chair in the gambling den is red. Red, the colour of blood and fire represents: Life. Strength.
Courage. Passion. Action. Masculine Energy. War. Power. Intimidation. Anger.
Aggression. Violence. Danger. In China, red symbolises joy, celebration, good luck,
prosperity and happiness. In Korea, it’s common to wear red to sporting events to show
support. CASINO GAMES VERSUS GO The teaser seems to compare Casino Games with Go, the Asian
game which originated from ancient China. Is ‘Life a Game’? Casino Games are for gamblers. They are mostly, games of chance and luck. Life is not a gamble. Kim Hee Woo should not have gambled his life away unnecessarily.
In the Past, Kim Hee Woo was caught off-guard. Unprepared for the harsh reality, he was in a precarious situation. For him, there are no two ways about justice. But, he did not think out his plans thoroughly. He has many failings. Poor Judgement. Inflexible. Unrealistic. Overconfident. Naïve. Reckless. Hot-headed. Unperceptive. Obsessive. Unworldly (Have little knowledge of the ways of the world). For Kim Hee Woo, his second life would be different. He
would live his life like the GO game, a strategic game of mental
skill, discipline, concentration and balance. In GO, a game of
encirclement, the object is to obtain more territory than your opponent. At
the end of the game, the player who controls more territory wins the game. It
is said that GO relates to the questions of the Past, Fate and the
Future. The winner decides the Future. LIGHT AND SHADOW Chiaroscuro - the contrasting interplay of light and shadow is
visible in beautiful image of Kim Hee Woo. BEAUTIFUL NIGHTIME HARBOUR SCENERY Violence Versus Beauty https://www.instagram.com/p/CbOf8YEPnV4/
