5 must have been the most awaited episode of The Sword of Aramoon after all
the excitement since the unforgettable opening episodes as can be seen from
the wild, irrepressible and exuberant responses it has evoked from the
audience. And everyone knows why. Lee Joon Gi’s depth and nuanced acting
performance has triggered the netizens’ animated discussions. As Saya, he is
impressive; he projects a sexy defiant look. The older twin’s sarcastic tone,
sense of insecurity and downcast demeanour, in the light of his twin’s incredible
achievements draw attention and win sympathy.
But that
is not all; the versatile Lee Joon Gi is an unforgettable formidable sight at
the ending sequence of Episode 5. That iconic scene has set the Internet on
fire.   Lee Joon
Gi delivers a high level of adrenaline to the scene - nimble, agile and swift
as he scales, no – powerfully charges up the rugged cliffs to the top. Lee’s
formidable range of emotions and eye energy has brought the intimidating
savage in Eun Seom to life. He has not only impressively flexed his strong
arm and leg muscles but also his acting muscles. His stunt is awe-inspiring. Eun
Seom’s electrifying savage wet look of fury, his lightning-scarred arm and his furious spider crawl will forever be frame-freezed in everyone’s mind. It is
an amazing beastlike Lee Joon Gi with his wild charm that the Kdrama audience
have never seen before. The feat itself, an iconic scene, is
stunning enough to electrify the global audience. Lee owns The Sword of Aramoon; he has
made his mark on television history. As
usual, the screenwriters, Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yeon, Director Kim Kwang Sik, Choi Chan Min, the Director of Photography,
the Lighting Director, the Action Choreographers and the Director of Music must
be lauded. A
REVOLUTIONARY CHANGE THE
POWER OF PURPLE
BLOOD  Tanya,
the High Priest, who served the highest god, Airuju, had arrived in time to
stop a violent fight which had broken out when the king and the queen embarked
on a mission to rescue Arok who had been kidnapped by some criminals in
Ttesarichon. The Arthdal soldiers had
also arrived to prevent the chaos from
escalating. Shockingly,
Tanya acknowledged the long-held belief of the White Peak Mountain Hearts
sect that Aramoon Haesulla, the god of Arthdal who was also the god of harmony
and unification, was an Igutu. Aramoon had
passed down his unique purple blood to his heirs and successors as proof of his
eternal blessings. The proclamation, though received with joy and cheers from
the members of the sect, created a rift among the people. Purple blood had
become sacred overnight. Some found it hard to accept the dramatic change of
religious and social beliefs but might tolerate it in the course of time.
To the
shock of many witnesses, purple blood was oozing down Tagon’s waist.
Unnoticed by the people, Eun Seom was also bleeding purple blood. He and Tagon’s
blood were similar; it was a bright purple.
Arok,
who was also injured in the struggle, had pure purple blood stains on his
clothes. His different purple tint was due to a blood colour that is diluted
from the union of his parents, one an Igutu, the other, a Saram. Eun Seom and
Tagon were the offspring of a Neanthal and a Saram.
THE
ARAMUN DYNASTY OF THE
IGUTUS A wind
of change was blowing through Arthdal. The High Priest also proclaimed the
start of the Aramun Dynasty, the first dynasty of Arthdal, amidst the
cheering and chanting of the members of the holy sect. Eun Seom, who glanced unbelievingly at Tanya, understood her intentions. Tagon,
losing a lot of blood, fell unconscious. Tanya directed her assistants to spread
the word that Tagon was alive and well. Any
dissent had to be quelled. The manipulation of the minds of the people was
their priority. Their chant was, ‘Aramun Haesulla, the messenger of Asa
Sin, an Igutu, ascended to heavens with the wind.’ THE
DESTINY OF THE
CHOSEN ONE TANYA STARTS THE BALL ROLLING
Tanya’s
proclamation was a façade. On the surface, it was to change the people’s
long-standing beliefs about purple blood. It was to turn their feelings from hatred to reverence
towards purple blood. The change favoured Tagon, by extension, Eun Seom. The
real purpose was to lead to Eun Seom to fulfill his destiny.
Since Tanya was blessed with the psychic powers of the gods, she could hear mumblings everywhere; she couldn’t and wouldn’t filter the good from the bad. It was
astonishing that believers took the liberty to put purple paint on lips on
the statues of Aramoon Haesulla. Everyone, including Eun Seom, was mystified
by the sudden veneration of Aramun as an Igutu. Meanwhile,
Tagon beginning to lose himself. He was hallucinating. Taealha’s
assistants were astonished by Tanya’s powers of prophesy; perhaps she was
really a god. THE
VOICE OF THE PEOPLE Tanya,
in the midst of her prayers at the tomb of Aramoon Haesulla in a cave, remembered
Eun Seom’s words that he had been driven to take up the cause of the Ago Union
as the god, Inashingi, to fulfill the selfish greed and ugly desires of the
members. Moa’s
words concerning the people’s desires came to mind. She concluded that in the
end, the voice of god was the voice of the people crying out aloud. In
fact, god had never spoken.’ THE
STRANGE MAGICAL BIRD AND THE ORACLE
OF ARAMOON  The
chirping of a strange magical bird which was flying around the cave attracted
her attention. The bird had a turquoise head, white body and black tail. It settled
on Aramun’s tomb. On the spot that it landed was the last message that Aramoon
had engraved onto the tomb. It was Aramoon’s personal tragedy that he had
been entombed alive.
WHEN THE
ZELKOVA TREE CRACKS AND MY
SWORD IS REVEALED, ARAMUN
SHALL KNOW THEIR MISSION
Tanya
showed Aramoon’s last oracle to the
ministers who had arrived to worship their god. ‘When
the zelkova tree cracks and my sword is revealed, Aramun shall know their
mission.’ What
does it mean? Shouldn’t it be ‘his’ mission? What does ‘their’
mean? Does ‘Aramun’ represent more than one person? Perhaps, it means ‘two
persons in one’, Inaishingi and Aramun Haesulla. Or is it a modern day politically
polite neutral term? HEART OF
STONE
The philosophy
of the ice-cold and detached Queen Taealha was quite an education for parents
in the audience. The pragmatic approach towards power was self-dependance and
ingratitude. Preaching
her philosophy to Arok, her son, she waved aside his views that they should
be grateful to Tanya, the High Priest, who had saved the royal family. Her
prompt answer to her son's comment was, ‘Nobody can save us. Only we can save
ourselves.’ THE HEAVENLY
MISSION
Eun Seom
was convinced that Tanya had done the right thing to announce that Aramoon
was an Igutu.
But,
Tanya told him in no uncertain terms that she had the courage of her
convictions because she was driven by her love for him and her belief in his
or their combined destiny. She
showed him Aramoon’s last will and oracle. ‘When
the zelkova tree cracks and my sword is revealed, Aramoon shall know their
mission.’
‘If the zelkova tree cracks and a sword is revealed, I hope you realize that you are Aramoon.’ Eun Seom,
skeptical about the sword, mirror and bell, being the children of the prophesy,
brushed aside her frivolous beliefs. He could not possibly be Aramoon Haesulla
because he, Eun Seom, was the Reincarnation of Inaishingi. Inaishingi and Aramun had been bitter enemies since 200 years ago. (Zelkova trees are valued by the Koreans; they a symbol of tolerance, patience, peace and harmony.) Tanya suggested that the biggest tragedy in Arth was the fierce rivalry between Inashingi and Aramoon Haesulla.
Originally, there was religious tolerance in Arthdal. The people were free to worship different gods. However, the peaceful coexistence amongst the gods was broken by two gods, Aramoon Haesulla and Inaishnghi.  Tanya
pointed out that even if Eun Seom won
the war between Ago and Arthdal, the Arthdal population might put up a
resistance and he would be forced to slaughter in order to suppress them. A
continual bloodbath would ensue.
Tanya
teared up because Eun Seom was extremely resistant to what he thought was a
grandiose idea. The fact was the clash of the two gods had continued for over
200 years. Tanya emphasized
that even if he wasn’t convinced or if he resisted his mission, it would
eventually reveal itself to him.
The
emotional Eun Seom asked her whether the mission or their love was more important
at the moment. He wasn’t interested in fanciful missions. They were parting ways
in such dire times. He didn’t know when they would meet again or whether they
would survive the war between Ago and Arthdal. Having
been rebuffed, Tanya sarcastically questioned if they should hug and cry, or
fight as before. He promised her he would be back for her.
Tagon, who
was having hallucinations, was getting delusional. He couldn’t even trust his
queen. AN
HEIRLOOOM FOR SAYA,
THE ELDER TWIN   The Neanthals, Nosanaho and Isrruv, met Saya in the forests and gave Saya a family heirloom from Ragaz, his father. Saya asked why it was not given to Eun Seom. The answer was he was the elder brother and he used to be more energetic. Saya smirked. The story
behind the heirloom was a long time ago two brothers parted ways and promised to meet again one day. Each took one of two similar ornaments so that they could recognize each
other when they met again.
Chaeeun wanted to return to Arthdal but Saya was not in the least interested. The defeated general assured her that Nunbyeol, her adoptee sister, would be fine. So was Eun Seom, whom he saw in his dreams. The younger twin was in Arthdal’s Secret Intelligence Organization and was Tanya’s lover.
The envious man was
wallowing in self-pity. Insecure about his failure, he was sarcastic when
pestered by Chaeeun to return to Arthdal. How could he face the music when he
had lost the war and lost half of his army. He was the first general to have
lost a war and it was humiliating to have been vanquished by the Ago beasts. He would probably be eliminated as the heir to the
Arthdal throne.   IKOMAHIS AND THE
GREAT GOCHIJU ROCK
A strangled cry interrupted their conversation. A boy was seen fleeing for his life. He had dropped something. Two strange men appeared. Saya and Chaeeun fled but the two men with strange markings on their faces were in hot pursuit.
Saya’s eyes
glowed purple. One attacker was
punched out of sight by Nosanaho, the Neanthal, who had suddenly reappeared. The other
man was smashed to the ground by Isrruv. The superhuman strength of the
Neanthals astounded the frightened pair. The four were stunned to learn that the two strange men were Igutus. Their purple blood gave them away. Before dying one of them pointed to Saya’s family heirloom and called him, Ikomahis. He was also wearing an ornamental object whose design was similar to that of Saya’s heirloom. It reminded Saya of the design
of The Great Gochiju Rock in Arthdal. It has 4 fingers grasping each
side of the rock.
 The
young boy, who had previously been pursued, met up with his father and told him
about Ikomahis. The tale was getting more interesting. It was a matter of
urgency that they went in search of Saya. Another
strange Igutu man happened to pick up a letter that had been dropped by the boy. The Neanthals had left the duo who was resting by a stream. The new Igutu saw Saya with
his family heirloom, the back of which reflected his image. THE EVIL
QUEEN COMES NOT TO
PRAY BUT TO
PRY The evil
queen came to the cave where Aramun’s tomb was located in the hopes of
finding out some facts from Tanya. She wanted to pry and find out how Tanya knew
Tagon’s Igutu heritage. It was a big risk and gamble for her to declare that purple
blood was a blessing from the heavens. Tanya cleverly replied that Aramun
Haesulla told her about it.
Taealha’s
beautiful elaborate bluish-gold headdress and bluish patterned robes
contrasted with the High Priest’s simple but beautiful pale turquoise robes
and headband. Complexity is contrasted with simplicity. The
queen suspected that Saya had been replaced by a doppleganger. Yangcha now
knew that Saya had been replaced by Eun Seom. Tanya begged him to keep it a
secret. EUN SEOM IN THE
CLUTCHES OF THE QUEEN
After
his meeting with the commanders and ministers prior to his departure for the war
front, Eun Seom went to say his goodbyes to the king. The king, in his groggy
state, babbled about killing those who knew about their Igutu blood. Having spotted the king’s sword on the table, Eun Seom could have easily killed him but refrained from doing so.
The evil queen invited Eun Seom to her chambers on the pretext of wanting to thank him for his help. But her insincerity was revealed when she plunged a poisoned needle into his neck; his unconscious body was carried in a chest to the Fortress of Fire.
 When he
woke up, he found himself chained to a chair. The evil queen was studying him.
The fact that he was in the torture chamber with all kinds of torture tools
around him made him uneasy.
The
queen asked him 3 questions but when he answered them, she deemed that all
his answers were wrong. He had failed her simple test.
One
question was about his relationship with the High Priest, Tanya. His answer
was particularly hilarious, ‘How sacrilegious!’ He
deemed it was blasphemous to be accused of having a relationship with the
holy and pure Tanya despite having hugged the High Priest so passionately in
public. He had also romanced her. The
queen knew that he was with Tanya before Aramoon’s tomb was opened. He
claimed he had no knowledge that the king was an Igutu but the queen did not
believe him. Yeonbal
and Gitoha and their war troops headed to the Fortress of Fire to rescue Eun
Seom. The queen was wrong to detain Eun Seom because he was going to war the
next day. The royal guards led by Gilseon rushed there to confront them because they were trespassing on the queen’s grounds. The ministers, including Yeolsan, also received news of the impending skirmish. Yeolsan got to know the bad news from Tanya, Mungtae and Dalsae about the capture of Eun Seom, whom they were planning to rescue. Dalsae, Mungtae
and Yeolson decided to rescue Inaishingi. Previously, Saya had divulged information about the secret passageway to Tanya. The exciting
escape orchestrated by the Wahans was successful.  The
royal guards and the military troops nearly came to blows but they stopped when
the queen found out Eun Seom had escaped. HAUNTED
BY THE PAST  The past
had caught up with Dalsae and Mungtae. They were to part ways again. Mungtae instructed
him to escape by way of Dalrae Rock. Dalsae apologised for his cowardice in
the past and Mungtae also apologised for the betrayal of his friends in the past. It was a moving moment. THINGS
FALL APART: THE
CENTRE CANNOT HOLD; MERE
ANARCHY IS LOOSED UPON THE WORLD. Y.B.
Yeats (The Second Coming)  Discord had made itself felt in the Ago Union. The Sul tribe led by Sul Sagang had decided to go their own way upon learning that Inaishingi had disappeared. Tachukan who had made himself the leader ordered them to return to their position but they would not be ordered around. The Ago commander probably feared that the
numbers of the union would be whittled down from the impending breakup. From Sul Sagang’s perspective,
Tachukan was not next in line in the chain of command. He didn’t have the
leadership qualities, aura and charisma that Inaishingi exuded. To compound
the situation, it was discovered a curse had descended upon them. Their horses
were dying like flies from a
mysterious illness. The disease seemed to have spread like wildfire among the
equine population. Compared to the horses of Arthdal, the horses of the
Ago union were in a dire situation. The heads of the union were convinced
that the Arth Gods were punishing them. Their luck had run out. The Arthdal
horses, their war trophies, were now useless if the disease spread. Mired in
such a situation, the union was falling apart. The hostilities between
Tachukan and the Sul chief were ameliorated by mediating parties. The Ago Union suffered
from many problems in the absence of the leader whom they revered. Taemaja
felt that they had to hide the fact that Inaishingi had vanished into the
thin air to avoid sending the coalition into a panic. But the wily Suhana aka
Red Claw, the spy argued they couldn’t hide that fact for too long. Ipsaeng
and Dalsae had also disappeared. Mirusol was still searching for their leader
in the forests. SAYA IS
TRAPPED BY FATE
Saya and
Chaeeun were walking in the forests which was full of unknown dangers. The
embittered and arrogant Arthdal general was harping on the fact that Eun Seom, his
twin, had taken over his place in Arthdal. He was unaware that his younger
twin brother had no intention of staying there. Being a general in Arthdal
wasn’t Inaishingi’s cup of tea. It was just that he hadn’t thought of a
clever way to wheel and deal out of the dangerous situation. And,
here in Ago, Eun Seom was the revered Inaishingi, so what could he, Saya, do in the Ago
Union? He was neither here nor there. And having lost everything, the
hoity-toity Saya was aghast that Chaeeun, a member of the hoi polloi, was
talking to him disrespectfully.
 Meanwhile,
Tagon had killed several medical assistants in his demented state. THE HARSH REALITY A BLEAK
AND DIRE FUTURE
 Yeolsan
had secretly brought Eun Seom out of Arthdal. He advised him not to return to
Arthdal but he received a rude shock. Eun Seom confidently declared that he
would be back as Inaishingi with countless warriors of the Ago Union.
As a
sign of good faith, Yeolsan presented Eun Seom with an iron sword, which the
younger man tested. When he swung it, a ringing sound was heard.  Astonished, he realised the iron sword was far superior to his bronze sword. The iron sword, which was lighter and stronger than the bronze sword, was the pride of Arthdal. And Yeolson made it clear: Have no delusions about it. Arthdal could produce it in great numbers very easily.
The Ago Union did not even have
enough bronze swords, what more iron swords. Was it a hyperbole when he said
that thousands and millions of Arthdal soldiers would swarm over Ago with
iron swords? Millions – such frightening numbers! Yeolson had painted a
petrifying picture of the future armies of Arthdal which would rapidly advance from the west to
the east.   Yeolson had magnified a future so horrible that Eun Seom, in his small Ago world, could never have imagined. The threat was not in the remote future or the not-so-distant future but the immediate future – NOW. He made no bones about it; he was explicit and unambiguous. In Yeolson’s opinion, it
was unquestionable that the Ago army had zero chance against an invincible
invading army armed with a new war weapon.
Yeolson
insisted that Eun Seom show the lethal weapon to his people and persuade them
to disperse in the hopes that many lives will be spared. If not, they might
just die in vain. But Eun Seom knew that they will forever live in the shadows and mortal fear
of Tagon and Arthdal.
THE
DANCE OF DESTINY
Eun Seom
was confounded by this new development. All the lives of Ago depended on him.
The Chosen One and the Ago Union were now trapped in a dance of destiny. Will
things break apart for the Ago Union? The
audience wait with bated breath at the revelation. The twist and turn of the
story has them in the palm of the writers. The gods
have other plans for their Chosen One. As he reflected on Yeolson’s words, thunder
rumbled and forked lightning lashed across the sky. Torrential rain poured
down on the hero, who was mesmerised by the amazing sword. The cliffs were a pool
of flickering shadows. SAYA IS
FOUND  Buksoe, Eun
Seom’s friend from his Wahan days, had reappeared; he was overjoyed to see the
person whom he thought was his childhood friend. But the clueless Saya had no
knowledge of him. Luck was on his side; Chaeeun had met Buksoe before. In that
exciting moment, Mirusol and her group of searchers had happened upon them.
Her excited yells could have woken up the dead. ‘Inashingi is here!’ The
respect they had shown towards the man whom they thought was their beloved
leader, Eun Seom, was a startling revelation to Saya. ARAMUN’S ORACLE THE
ZELKOVA TREE CRACKS Mulling over the future threat of the iron sword to the Ago Union, Eun Seom failed to notice the presence of Yangcha who had crept up on him. Feeling the burning eyes of the other man, he was shocked by the threatening stance of the obsessive former Child of Shahati who was there to avenge what he thought was the danger Eun Seom had brought to Tanya.
Fighting in the driving rain, they crossed swords multiple times. Yangcha finally discovered that his bronze sword was useless against the relentless swing of Eun Seom’s iron sword. Eun Seom swerved and swayed as the swords swung back and forth. It was inevitable Eun Seom would win. It was a fight between a god who armed with an iron sword and a mortal with a useless bronze sword. Eun Seom was invincible. Yangcha
rolled to the ground in humiliation but though he was stunned, he did not
give up. THE
LIGHTNING SCARS THE
LICHTENBERG FIGURES
At that
moment, the zelkova tree broke into two, leaving the stump standing while the
branches fell into the deep ravine below. Yangcha took the moment of
distraction to slash at Eun Seom but as fate would have it, his sword, like
the tree, also broke into two.
Eun
Seom’s lifted hand, which was pointed towards the sky, was struck by lightning.
The lightning coursed through the metal sword, a conductor of electricity; it flowed right through his arm, causing a massive shock. He grimaced in pain.
His face ran the gamut of emotions as the flashes of electricity left a
spidery network of bloody red scars running along the length of his rippling muscular
arm.  His hand
was marked by the Lichtenberg figures from lightning strike. The searing, fiery,
red-hot electricity seemed to burn into him as he struggled with his enormous
pain. It was a
fearful sight as Eun Seom’s hand trembled and shook. It seemed that the
lightning, which had gripped him like a vise, had stubbornly refused to let go. He also couldn’t detach himself from it. Finally, when the blinding light vanished,
the convulsions ceased and his sword flew away. Left breathless from the
ordeal, it seemed that he had swayed unsteadily at the edge of the
the precipitous cliff. The
Kdrama audience must have been kept on the edge of their seats. The hairs of their
necks must have also bristled. Taking
advantage of the dangerous situation, Yangcha jumped up, took off his reel of chains
that was wrapped around his body and swung it at Inaishingi. Eun Seom lost
his balance and fell headlong into the abyss below. THE FEROCIOUS SCALING OF THE STEEP CLIFF   It was
horrible and heart-breaking moment for the audience as Inaishingi, howling in
pain, grabbed desperately at the air. It seemed like it was the end of Eun Seom. His screams echoed through the stillness of the mountains. Some may have
goosebumps; some were instantly horrified.
But no, if
you’d ever doubted Inaishingi was a god, then this was the moment when your doubts vanished. There is no
shadow of a doubt about his divinity. You
might not believe it but Inaishingi impressively fought his way up the cliff
– he scaled the steep incline of the cliff in the fierce raging storm to reach the summit. His
ferocious predator look matched the thunderous, devastating storm.
The murderous
fiendish look in his eyes took on a life of its own. An incandescent,
mersmerising purple glow blazed within. He was like a cobra come alive. The
savage and agile Igutu was like a wild animal which had been stung into a
frenzy. He was not unlike a monstrous spider. With his 4 powerful and muscular limbs
spread apart, he moved with appalling speed over the jagged outcrops and
ledges without losing his grip and without falling. He had furiously crawled
up the slippery vertical cliff with such ferocious determination and shaking
with such pent-up fury, that viewers must have been shocked. One can think of no
animal that can hurl itself forward like he did. His amazing agility and
balance showed that he was no human; he was superhuman. He was a god. AT THE
MERCY OF  When Inaishingi reached the top of the cliff, the cliff climbing four-limbed hero looked as if he could tear Yangcha from limb to limb. He grabbed hold of the former Child of Shahati and hurled him down from where he had climbed up. Yangcha instinctively
threw his roll of chains up and it caught one of the ledges.
The
bedraggled handsome hero looked down at his nemesis for some time as the
latter, while gripping his chains, struggled and dangled in the raging storm. Inaishingi,
being a god, was merciful. Seeing scant reason to kill the ignorant mortal, Inaishingi
finally pulled him up. It was a close call for the foolish bodyguard.
THE SWORD OF
Then Eun Seom recalled the words of Aramun, ‘When the zelkova tree cracks and my sword is revealed, Aramun shall know their mission.’ Yancha asked, ‘Is it Aramun’s sword?’ Gazing at Yangcha, Eun Seom ordered him to inform the High Priest that Aramoon’s sword had been found in the zelkova tree.
When Yancha objected, Inaishingi stressed, ‘From now on, this is Aramun’s sword.’
Then, Inaishingi raised his lightning-scarred right hand which held the iron sword. He proclaimed, ‘No matter how you see it, this sword is mine! Tell her - I, Eun Seom of the Wahan Tribe, will become Inaishingi and Aramun Haesulla!’ There was a note of finality in his voice.
At that moment, the audience realise that Eun Seom was willing and determined to make the iron sword his sword and to fulfill the mission as dictated by the oracle. He would accept the mission to unite the powers of the two gods, Inaishingi and Aramoon. Lightning streaked across the skies and thunder rumbled. With a thunderous roar, while holding tightly onto the sword, he plunged it deep into the heart of the stump of the zelkova tree. Then, his eyes glowed a purple hue, the mark of an Igutu.
     GUILTY
PLEASURES
Many ladies and perhaps even men, might succumb to the guilty pleasure of watching the compelling, not to mention, scrumdiddlyumptious Lee Joon Gi at the end of Episode 5, over and over again. Well, what’s wrong with a little indulgence every
now and then. But most likely, they won’t be giving it up anytime soon. 
 Imagine the glorious muscular arm, biceps and triceps of the best action star ever; they are a sight to behold. Many can visualize him even in their dreams: his 4 powerful limbs crawling spider-like furiously up the steep incline of the cliffs and also his powerful raised lightning-scared hand gripping his iron sword.  The
