HIGH FANTASY

ANCIENT WAR

EPIC

The television series, The Sword of Aramoon, led by Lee Joon Gi, is a groundbreaking Korean high fantasy-ancient war epic, the first of its kind in South Korean television history. Lee, who plays the titular role, portrays two characters - Eun Seom and Saya, the Igutu  twins who were separated at birth. The series speaks of wars that would devour a continent and unravel the world of ancient gods. It also stars Shin Sae Kyeong, Jang Dong Guan and Kim Ok Vin. Produced by Studio Dragon, it is directed by award-winning director Kim Kwang Sik and written by award-winning writers, Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yeon.

The television studio also has other award-winning crew in its employ: Photography Director / Cinematographer Choi Chan Ming, Lighting Director You Seok Moon, Music Composer Kim Tae Seong, Costume Director Cho Sang Kyung and Art Director Cho Hwa Sung.

The Saturday-Sunday television series will premiere on tvN, TVING, Disney Plus, Hulu and Star Plus on 9 September 2023 at 9:20 p.m. KST.

The sterling actor, Lee Joon Gi, known as The King of Saguek and The Top Action Actor, had been specially chosen and courted to play the leading characters of the identical twins, Eun Seom and Saya. It was a casting coup for the casting team and the production studio to have roped in the globally popular and international award-winning actor. The actor, in top physical form and at the top of the performing game, is reported, as usual, to have done all the spectacular stunts and action scenes himself. In the television series which is filmed like a movie, Lee, portraying the conquering hero of Arthdal, has ramped up the excitement for the upcoming show in September.

The spectacular scenes could not have been created without Lee Joon Gi’s brilliant and consummate acting performance, awesome athleticism, sensual physicality and remarkable martial arts skills. The audience expect that Lee Joon Gi be richly rewarded with numerous awards, international and local.

The Sword of Aramoon is a High Fantasy television series. (The moon is a symbol of good fortune and prosperity for the Korean people.)

According to Masterclass, High Fantasy uses ‘a fantasy setting or secondary world to tell an epic story.’

There are 6 characteristics of High Fantasy: A Non-earth Setting. A World-Level Conflict. A Hero. Fantastic Creatures. Historic or Unusual Technologies and Magic.

The Sword of Aramoon fits these criteria.

The writers, Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yeon, have created a non-earth world in great detail. The world-building is fantastic.

The Sword of Aramoon is set in the mythical world of Arth which is a large body of land or a continent. There are many ancient cities including Arthdal and Atturad or places like Doldambul, Plains of the Moon and Lark where Eun Seom (Lee Joon Gi) and Tanya (Shin Sae Kyeong) reside.

A story about the clash of half-human-half barbaric gods, The Sword of Aramoon, is set in the mythical world of Arth 8 years after Tagon had ascended the Arthdal throne.

It was a time when the production of iron products features importanly in Arthdal. War demands that iron helmets, suits of armour, swords, knives, spears, bow and arrows be made.

Filming of the series which began on 22 August 2022 ended on 29 April 2023, so it is logically assumed that the story will walk the viewers through the four seasons: Late Summer. Autumn. Winter. Spring.

The Arth people worship eight gods, including the two very important gods, Aramoon Haesulla and Inaishingi.

Inaishingi is the god of the waterfalls, the god of justice and the god of harmony and unification.

Apart from Inaishingi, Eunseom (Lee Joon Gi) is the only one to have survived Ago's deadliest waterfall in a thousand years.

Inaishigi was prophesized to return to the Ago one day with a sickle.

The Ago Alliance is convinced that Eunseom is the Second Coming of Inaishingi. therefore, Eun Seom is proclaimed as ‘The Second Coming of Inaishingi’ and the hero of the Ago Union.

A God of Two (2) Voices, Aramoon Haesulla is the Founder of Arthdal and god of harmony and unification. People pray to him for forgiveness. He carved fingers in the Great Gochiju Rock.

According to the White Peak Mountain Heart people, Aramun Haesulla was an Igutu.

It was said that Aramoon Haesulla would send down three heavenly objects to 3 specially chosen individuals when he wishes to end the world. The Star-shaped Bell. The Sword. The Mirror.

Each heavenly object also represents a person.

The three heavenly objects, the instruments of Aramoon Haesulla, will fight against The One Who Killed His Father, Tagon.

Eun Seom, Saya and Tanya are the chosen ones. The three of them were born on The Night of the Azure Comet. Tanya is The Star-shaped Bell, Eun Seom is The Sword and Saya is The Mirror

The star-shaped bell was given to Tanya (Shin Sae Kyeong) in Arthdal Chronicles 1.

In the Sword of Aramoon, Eun Seom (Lee Joon Gi) will be given The magical Sword to slay ‘the decadent world’.

He is also The Sword, the instrument of the god, Aramoon Haesulla to war against evil (Tagon).

And, he will finally emerge as Aramoon Haesulla or The Second Coming of Aramoon Haesulla. Eun Seom is a god twice over - Inaishingi and Aramoon Haesulla.

Saya (Lee Joon Gi) would be given the Mirror to illuminate the world. But, before that, he will fight against his brother for power.

There are at least two sacred flames in the story. These flames are eternally lit and do not need to be fed by oil or coal.

The one Asa Ron uses is believed to help him commune with the gods.

The other sacred flame is in the land of the Wahans. It is located in the sacred place where Tanya practises her spiritual dance.

The prayer, Farewell To The Moon, is conducted for those who are about to die. If the prayer is not performed before a person dies, their soul won’t make it to the moon.

Many strange and unique beings inhabit Arth. One of them is The Neanthals.

They are a blue-blooded race; their physical features include: blue lips, blue blood and blue marks on the skin across their backs. Their eyes glow blue when angry or agitated.

They are unbelievably strong; they have superhuman strength. Their signature killing move is to pull out their enemy's heart with their bare hands.

Neanthals can sense other Neanthals and Igutus.

When the Neanthals train in swordsmanship, none can beat them.

They, with the exception of Nunbyeol, cannot perform martial arts because it will make their blood flow backwards. Nunbyeol had surgery to make her less powerful.

All, except 5 lucky ones (4 males and 1 female - Nunbyeol), were massacred during The Great Hunt by the Daekan Force led by Tagon. The name of the night the Neanthals were killed is called The Blood of Atturad.

Eun Seom and Saya were born from the union between Ragaz, a Neanthal and Asa Hon, a Saram from Arthdal's White Mountain Tribe.

Saram are similar to humans in our world. Most of them can’t dream unless they are spiritually blessed and go through training.

The only clan that is believed to be able to hear the voices of the gods or dream is the Asa clan. Few people within the clan are blessed in this way.

Separated at birth from his twin brother, Eun Seom and his mother live with the Wahans, a  loving and trusting tribe.

Igutus are a mixed race, born from the union of a red-blooded human-like Saram and a blue-blooded barbarian Neanthal.

Red combined with blue is purple. Therefore, Igutus have purple blood, purple lips and eyes that flash purple when agitated or when using their powers. They have to use their own resources to hide their purple lips.

Igutus are naturally stronger than Saram, but weaker than Neanthal. They can sense Neanthals.

There are at least 3 important Igutus in the Arth tale: The twins, Eun Seom and Saya, and Tagon.

Aramoon Haesulla is believed by White Peak Mountain Heart people to be an Igutu. Contrary to the beliefs of the people in Arthdal, they consider igutus to be sacred beings.

Reviled, hated and feared by the people of Arthdal, the Igutus, like King Tagon, have to hide their Igutu heritage.

Separated at birth and raised in different environments, the twins are polar opposites and have different personalities.

Nature and Nurture. Which will emerge to be more powerful in the end?

White is a holy colour: The White Peak. The White Wolf. Asa Clan’s white clothes. The white clothes of the High Priest, Tanya and her followers.

The Great Black Wall, a huge and gaping fault zone in the mountains, is the natural boundary between Arthdal and Lark, the home of the Wahans.

None is able to cross it but Tagon solved the problem by building a sort of wooden elevator.

This building, owned by the Hae Tribe headed by Taealha’s father before the tribes were abolished, is where the Bronze / Iron workshop is located.

This is also the place where Saya had been confined and lived in isolation since young. He was a caged bird in the tower for 20 years because he is an Igutu, a race feared and hated by the people of Arthdal.

Taealha helped Tagon to raise Saya. The place has a great library where he widens his knowledge.

Having read all the various texts in the great library, he is intelligent and knowledgeable. He knows war strategies and tactics.

Tagon brought Saya back to Arthdal after The Great Hunt and adopted him as a baby.

Saya's Neanthal father had been killed by Tagon. His identical twin, Eun Seom, was saved by their Saram mother.

Raised in a cold and harsh environment, Saya is distrustful of people. Senaere, Eun Seom’s maid and lover, was murdered by Taealha on the night of their planned escape from the tower. Taelha ordered her personal assistant, Hae Too Ak, to murder the young girl. Eun Seom vows vengeance against Taealha.

The Arthdal prince harbours the dream of becoming the successor to Tagon. The birth of Arok, the son of the king and queen, thwarts his ambition.

The White Mountain faith is the original religion in Arthdal.

The White Peak Mountain Heart, a breakaway branch, differs from the mother religion. Although they share similar ritual practices, the White Peak Mountain Heart believe Aramoon Haesulla was an Igutu.

The White Peak Mountain Heart worshippers were not legally allowed to practise their faith in Arthdal for two hundred years; they are a secret sect which has resorted to conducting secret meetings.

After Tanya was named High Priest, the White Peak Mountain Heart becomes the dominant faith in Arthdal. Their symbol is in the shape of a square with two crooked lines branching off from each corner of the square.

Eun Seom had saved Xabara’s baby in a conflict. Xabara and her army of warriors with strangely painted faces, swear to repay his kindness. If Eun Seom summons them to the battlefield, they would readily lend a hand.

Another strange group, the gang of assassins under the control of the Asa Clan, have black tongues and tainted fingers from their constant contact with poisons.

The callous and tyrannical Tagon does not enjoy legitimacy as king. He, a lawless and belligerant king, wages war after war in the huge continent of Arthdal in his ambition to acquire territories and expand his kingdom.

Eun Seom, deploring the restless ambition of Tagon and his needless slaughtering, launches the final war against Arthdal  to end the conflicts: A war to end a war. A Just War.

His war cry is, ‘From the Notsan River to Arthdal, From Arthdal to the White Mountain, From the White Mountain to Atturad.

It means that Eun Seom as The Second Coming of Aramoon Haesulla, has the intention to conquer the whole continent of Arth to bring about a new dawn.

In the war-torn continent of Arth, there are various conflicts between the Ago Union and Arthdal. One involves a fight between Eun Seom and Saya.

There is ‘a clash of gods’ in the fight for Arthdal. It is a war between Inaishingi Eun Seom who is also ‘The Second Coming of Aramoon Haesulla’ and the fake god, Tagon, who claims to be Aramoon Haesulla.

The conflict between Eun Seom and Tagon puts the entire Arth world in jeopardy.

Eun Seom forms the Ago Union, an alliance of 30 tribes. The coalition of different tribes finally launches a war against the tyrannical king Tagon.

As prophesized, Eun Seom (The Sword), Tanya (The Star-Shaped Bell) and Saya (The Mirror) will challenge Tagon, the person who killed his own father.

Mubeck will challenge Tagon. So will Saya who wishes to dethrone Tagon.

Eun Seom, the Arth hero, is destined to fight off the forces of evil, Tagon and his queen, Taealha.

The story of Eun Seom begins in Lark, in the East. He matures quickly and rises to the challenge of conquering Arthdal and the whole of Arth. He is declared to be The Second Coming of Inaishingi and The Second Coming of Aramoon Haesulla. He has the power of two gods combined in the battle between Good and Evil.

The final battle in Arth, the attack on Arthdal, that the Ago leader will be fighting will have one decisive factor in his favour. His ginormous courage bolstered by his firm conviction that he is god. If he triumphs over Tagon, he will bring about a new dawn, a new beginning.

The Arthdal army on horseback is heavily armed with iron suits of armour, protective iron helmets and sharp swords.

But, the army of the Ago Union is comparatively ill-equipped. In the latest war pictures released by tvN, the inferior army also wield swords. What they have is huge amounts of courage, determination and a dogged belief in the divinity of their leader.

Eun Seom is compelled to fight his twin brother, Saya. The fight would be a study into the minds of the twins who were separated at birth.

In the conflict between Eun Seom and Tagon, Tanya, the High Priest, who can commune with the gods, sides with Eun Seom. Her prayers will be tremendously powerful.

The war-based television series provides the viewers with intriguing insights into the minds and psychology of not only the hero and his twin brother but also that of the high priest and the heinous Arthdal royal villains.

Let’s not forget that the gods in the heavens might intervene in the chaos occurring in the mythical world of Arth. Divine Intervention.

Kanmoreu, the legendary great horse, which is caught and trained by Eun Seom in Lark, can run as fast as the wind and can leap in the air. Eun Seom, the horse whisperer and listener, can commune with his equestrian friend.

The magical black horse, the great descendant of the first pureblood horse, would find its way to Eun Seom when he is ready for the battle between Good and Evil.

Strange magical birds feature in the story. They appear as a warning of an impending catastrophe.

Isodunyong, a god, made a prophecy that their tails will change to blue when a disaster is about to happen.

The Bronze Workshop under the control of the Hae tribe is the place where bronze in the Fortress of Fire is melted. The Hae Tribe, under Queen Taelha, has stayed in power because of their knowledge, including the secret of how to  produce bronze products.

In the Sword of Aramoon, the Iron Age has come to Arthdal. The tale speaks of swords, suits of amour, knives, bows and arrows made of iron in the iron workshop.

Yeolson, the father of Tanya, develops a technique that uses iron to make steel blades.

Iron weapons are used in hand-to-hand combat and fights on horseback.

As the formidable High Priest with enormous spiritual powers, Tanya has the unusual ability or psychic power to read minds. She is Asa Sin's direct descendant who is the true wielder of the psychic ability of the gods.

Tanya, who is elevated to be a member of the nobility, is determined to make her voice heard in Arthdal; she uses her influence and authority to keep the evil king and ambitious queen in check.

Although Tanya is kind and benevolent, people live in fear of her as she can cast magic spells and curses, especially by the power of prediction.

It is strange but true, wars can be fought not just with swords, but also with words or prayers.

The global viewers are also curious about the Love Triangle between Eun Seom, Tanya and Saya. Eun Seom and Tanya seem to be passionately in love. Will Eun Seom part with Tanya because of his twin brother, Saya?

The audience is impatiently waiting for the premiere of The Sword of Aramoon, the most highly awaited television series of 2023.

Let the MAGIC begin.
