3. More Attention-Grabbing Scenes From The Masterpiece, Again My Life

ATTENTION-GRABBING

SCENES

FROM

THE MASTERPIECE

AGAIN MY LIFE

Many memorable scenes abound in Again My Life. The performances of the actors range from brilliant to something resembling utter perfection. The standout, without question, is Lee Joon Gi. Many scenes including action sequences which are filled with tremendous beauty and meaning are bound up with Kim Hee Woo, a titanic character bought to life by the formidable Lee Joon Gi, South Korea's best-loved and respected multihyphenate actor and entertainer. Lee’s natural charisma, powerful aura and magnetic presence on the screen resonate with the audience. His co-stars, many of whom are stars in their own rights, share screen time with him and make unforgettable scenes in the fantasy-political-legal-comedy-action Kdrama.

Some of Kim Hee Woo's most interesting scenes are with Kim Hee Ah, his romantic pursuer. Kim Hee Woo’s relationship with Kim Hee Ah is intriguing. In the presence of indomitable, intelligent and independent Kim Hee Ah, Kim Hee Woo remains cool, respectful and cautious; he cares about her but does not encourage her affection for him.  Kim Hee Woo and Kim Hee Ah’s romantic chemistry is palpable. There is an interesting amount of tension between them.

Kim Hee Ah knows what she wants or desires, and she chases him but unfortunately, her love is unrequited. Kim Hee Woo’s powerful sense of mission underpins everything that he does. His dogged drive to punish Cho Tae Sub and his criminal lackeys prevents him from pursuing her.

Kim Hee Ah, a competent young businesswoman of substance, dares to defy Cho Tae Sub, as shown in Episode 14.

But she is not strong in the affairs of the heart. The series of images of her romantic pursuit of Kim Hee Woo, of her eyes that are tinged with melancholy and regret, bring tears to the eyes of the audience.

Her pursuit of him, with her longing, craving and hunger for his love, is one of the images that are etched in the audience’s mind. In their scenes together, Kim Hee Woo remains stoically distant.

The hesitation on Kim Hee Woo’s part when she bares her soul to him in Episode 10 fills the moment with tension. A flicker of emotion is detected in his detached demeanour. It is as if some warm thoughts have travelled through his mind, and he is touched. It is only when he accedes to her desire to have a doll that the audience are relieved.

As time goes on, the mask of nonchalance and detachment that Kim Hee Woo wears crumbles when he could no longer suppress his love for her. He is always cool towards her. But, in Episode 10, at the art museum, he wears a strange or slightly hurt look when she tells him that she suspects his motives in sticking his nose into her business.

Cho Tae Sub, played by Lee Kyoung Young, gives the viewers the creeps particularly with his taps on the table.

His imperious, dictatorial attitude and display of power in Episode 10 makes him a shocking character.

The viewers must be quite pleased when Cho Tae Sub finally breaks down when informed of the death of his close aide, Kim Jin Woo, played by Kim Young Hoon.

Lee Kyoung Young, who plays many villainous roles in his career, should be offered the role of a benign father or grandfather.

Again My Life is full of comedic gems. Lee Joon Gi, Jung Sang Hoon, Park Chul Min, Kim Hee Jung and Ji Chan prove their worth in many comic moments in the drama. Kim Hee Woo and Lee Min Soo, like Kim Hee Woo and Park Sang Man, are brothers-at-arms. But, Kim Hee Woo and Lee Min Soo, are one of the same kind; they share a unique relationship. Viewers suspect Lee Min Soo is also from the Future.

The comical and funny Lee Joon Gi and Jung Sang Hoon ignite the screen with their wit and eloquence in the intelligent Again My LifeThey have to be applauded for their masterful performance of the dialogues which are full of wicked humour, clever talk and dazzling witticisms. Those at the receiving end of their biting sarcasm, scathing remarks and barbed wit, like Choi Kang Jin (Kim Jin Woo) and Jang Il Hyun (Kim Hyun Mook), foam at the mouth. It is delightful to watch them in a conversation.

Many of the scenes of Kim Chan Sung (Park Chul Min) and Lee Mi Ok (Kim Hee Jeong) are richly comic. There are a lot of hilarious moments in which the actors provide comic relief or some wonderful slapstick comedy.

The viewers marvel at their heart-warming relationship with their son, Kim Hee Woo. There are many cute moments when Kim Hee Woo cuddles and hugs them, or laughs and jokes with them, a far cry from his previous life. Their humour and their affection for each other, the mainstay of healthy and happy relationships, keep the family together.

Park Sang Man, played by Ji Chan, has a strong and natural bromance with Kim Hee Woo, his father’s ‘saviour’. The prosecutor shares many hilarious moments together with Park Sang Man as they work together to rid their world of evil. One particularly humorous moment is in Episode 14, when Kim Hee Woo gives Park Sang Man a friendly kick after being teased about the 'femme fatale'.

Ji Chan’s most memorable moment is when an attempt to murder Park Sang Man by Dr K and Kim Jin Woo, Cho Tae Sub’s personal aide, was carried out in Episode 15. It is a picture of great courage and loyalty in the face of danger and fear. Park Sang Man's refusal to betray Kim Hee Woo led him to suffer the same fate as his mentor. He was thrown off a building. The devastation on Kim Hee Woo's face shows that he is inconsolable. He is horrified by the thought that Park Sang Man might never wake up from his coma.

Kim Han Mi, a strong female character played by Kim Jae Kyung, gives the viewers a very strong, positive impression. Kim Jae Kyung plays the spoiled, entitled and playful young woman to the hilt.

Though she turns over a new leaf, her rough, masculine characteristics put Kim Hee Woo off. The love that the independent, feisty and capable reporter has for Kim Hee Woo is unrequited. He was never hers in the first place. Their friendship cannot move beyond the platonic stage. Despite this, the chemistry between Lee Joon Gi and Kim Jae Kyung is quite obvious.

There are many ‘most’ memorable and thrilling action scenes in Again My Life. But the scene that is most spectacular is the fight scene in Episode 1 between Kim Hee Woo and Dr K, played by Hyun Woo Sung, which ends up with Kim Hee Woo falling from a skyscraper. The fight scene which fills the air with considerable tension among the audience and the fantasy scenes (the beautiful fall from the building, the revolving circular stage and the screen or theatre in the sky) are deeply etched in the audience's memory. The fantasy scenes are so magical.

Kim Jin Woo, a despicable villain played by Kim Young Hoon, gets his just deserts in Episode 16. Kim Hee Woo delights in humiliating the arrogant sidekick of the equally villainous Cho Tae Sub. The prosecutor puts him in his place with his self-satisfied smirks which send chills down one's back.

Lee Gyeong Min (Gu Seung Hyuk), Cho Sung Won (Park Jin Hyuk) and Choi Min (Lee Yeon Suk) must be mentioned for their contributions to the drama. They are talented and good-looking.

One has also to single out the wardrobe supervisor to be praised for the wardrobe choices for autumn and winter, particularly the stylish long coats, suits and jackets worn by the dashing Prosecutor Kim Hee Woo, and the beautiful, elegant and tasteful dresses of Kim Hee Ah, the heiress of the Chunha Conglomerate.

The impeccable long coats of Kim Hee Woo make the handsome hunk the most gorgeous prosecutor in the drama world. One is relieved that Kim Hee Ah looks so beautiful and stylish without being ostentatious.

A startling but pleasant fact is The Grim Reaper, instead of wearing black, is dressed in a stylish billowy red pant suit.

The cast and crew deserve many top awards. Other than the Best Director awards that should be presented to Director Han Chul and Director Kim Yong Min, the Grand Prize or Daesang to Lee Joon Gi for his tour-de-force acting performance; Lee's co-stars and the production crew should also be properly rewarded. What also impresses is the top-notch acting performance, awesome cinematography, the breathtaking action choreography, the wonderful editing, the stylish wardrobe, the uplifting music and songs (the OSTs) etc. One should not forget the wonderful work of the novelist, the scriptwriters and the rest of the production crew who have contributed to the creation of the masterpiece.
