Kim Hee Woo Reinvents His Life In Again My Life

KIM HEE WOO

REINVENTS

HIS LIFE

IN

AGAIN MY LIFE

A big makeover is waiting for Kim Hee Woo who is back from the dead in the legal-action-fantasy tale, Again My Life. The previously hot-headed prosecutor, portrayed by Lee Joon Gi, is not committing the same mistakes that he had made in his previous life. Kim Hee Woo’s supernatural comeback is a game-changing experience for the future Star Prosecutor. The keywords are change and transformation. The new skills that he hones ensure that he gets ahead in the volatile future world. Again My Life is the baby of Director Han Chul Soo who is assisted by Lee Byeong-heon (screen adaptation) and co-scriptwriters Jay and Kim Yul.

Again My Life explores the issues of The Past and The Future, and Reality and Fantasy. After being given a new life by the Grim ReaperKim Hee Woo, who was born in 1980, goes back to being 18 (Korean age). He is not given a road map on the strategies that he should employ to deal with the evil forces in his new life.  However, he naturally develops a variety of talents and skills in high school and university, which would propel him from unpromising beginnings to the threshold of fame in his new world.

Kim Hee Woo’s curiosity about the world around him is insatiable. His many interests which range from law and justice to real estate and the economy, undoubtedly, reveal a very serious young man, particularly in the coming-of-age segment of the tale. But, that is not all. Kim Hee Woo possesses many of the intelligences expounded by Howard Gardner in his Theory of Multiple Intelligences.

BODILY-KINESTHETIC INTELLIGENCE

MARTIAL ARTS SKILLS

Despite having taken martial arts classes, Kim Hee Woo initially does not defend himself when he is bullied by some school thugs. Previously, he had sought the help of his teacher but he soon realises that reporting bullying incidents to the school authorities is futile. The plead for help falls on deaf ears because the powerful and rich parents lord it over the teachers and the school.

The time is ripe for Kim Hee Woo to take matters into his own hands. Summoning his courage, he rises to the challenge and trounces the intimidating bullies, stopping bullying in its tracks. With that, he regains his self-respect and earns the admiration of other students, particularly that of the other victims.

But, a permanent solution to the problem is desperately needed. With the help of his friends, they pretend to be the media and make hoax calls to the school, inquiring about ‘the bullying cases that had been reported to them’. Their ploy forces the administrators to deal immediately with the thorny problem.

Kim Hee Woo shows real leadership and creativity in problem-solving to affect positive changes in the school. The students could certainly learn a thing or two about resourcefulness from Kim Hee Woo. Should the school administrators discover the truth, they would surely appreciate his leadership qualities.

LOGICAL-MATHEMATICS INTELLIGENCE

Intellectual competence is an important quality. Kim Hee Woo develops his Mathematical-Logical skills after getting help from his teacher. Hard work ensures academic success. One thing follows another. The improvement of his Mathematical ability leads to the general improvement in his studies. Meanwhile, his stint at the legal firm helps him to sharpen his logical thinking skills.

His exam results surpass even his wildest dreams. He has dragged himself from the bottom of the class to be the top student in the school. Shocked, one of his teachers accuses him of cheating in the examinations. In the end, the problem is resolved.

Kim Hee Woo’s self-confidence improves but it is not easy-peasy all the way. In fact, his obsession in a law case in KMS reduces his time for his studies. His examination results were disappointing. But, he is undeterred and eventually, he manages to regain his top position.

Realisation dawns on him that he needs to strike a balance between conflicting interests, studies and part-time work. He sits for the 1998 College Mathematics Proficiency Test and comes up trumps and is offered a place at the Korea University.

INTER-PERSONAL

INTELLIGENCE

Making friends is easy for Kim Hee Woo because he had lived a previous life. His natural confidence is an attractive quality. He makes fast friends with 3 young ladies. When it comes to inter-personal relationships with the opposite sex, Kim Hee Woo knows the score. Disciplined and resolute, he would not allow himself to be distracted from the end game. He offers only platonic friendships and it is no secret that he has to ward off admirers.

KIM GYU RI

He meets Kim Gyu Ri, a very intelligent student, who tells him of group studies for those who have obtained first and second positions in their own class. Kim Hee Woo learns of her astraphobia, an extreme fear of thunder and lightning, caused by her parents’ death during a thunderstorm. When she succumbs to a panic attack during a thunderstorm, Kim Hee Woo carries her to the school infirmary after which their friendship blossoms.

PARK (KIM) HAN MI

Park (Kim) Han Mi fails to draw Kim Hee Woo’s interest until he learns about her background. He offers to guide the wayward girl in her studies and stir her desire to acquire a university degree. He tries to capitalise on their friendship to get first-hand information on her evil father. He may appear to be shrewd and calculating but he proves his real concern for her when he successfully extricates her from her arranged marriage with a sleezy guy.

KIM HEE AH

Last but not least, is Kim Hee Ah, the youngest daughter of the Chairman of the Chun Ha conglomerate. Kim Hee Woo helps her with her university report. She falls head over heels in love with him but is rejected by him.

The gorgeous and stunning young man must have given the three young ladies sleepless nights in Seoul but they willingly assist him in his mission to uproot evil in their country.

Other than the young women, Kim Hee Woo is lucky to assisted by male friends like Park Sang Man who proves to be a loyal and faithful friend, assistant and business partner.

INTRA-PERSONAL INTELLIGENCE

Kim Hee Woo understands his own drive and motivations. He knows himself inside out. The most worrying point in his mission is his lack of money; he needs it and he has to make it fast.

When Kim Hee Woo hears the news about the 1997 Asian Financial crisis that grips much of East Asia and South East Asia, he remembers that it had started in Thailand in July 1997. The countries which were most affected by the crisis were Indonesia, South Korea and Thailand. The International Monetary Fund stepped in to stabilise the currencies and economies of those countries which were hard hit.

Kim Hee Woo wants to capitalise on the financial crisis to make money; he intends to find a job to expand his knowledge and improve his financial situation and assets in preparation for his fight against Jo Tae Sub. The International Monetary Fund Crisis gives Kim Hee Woo opportunities to broaden his knowledge about the economic situation and strategies to accumulate wealth that would lead him nearer to his goal and target.

The shrewd and manipulative young man uses his family’s poor financial status as an excuse to get a part-time job. His sympathetic teacher introduces him to Kang Min Sok, her brother who is a lawyer at the KMS law firm, the largest private legal practice in Seoul. He seems to be the owner of the firm but the manhwa tells us that he is the law firm’s representative lawyer, whatever that means.

Are there child labour laws that prohibit the employment of minors?

Kim Hee Woo’s part-time job in KMS results in a fruitful collaboration between him and Lawyer Kang. While working at the law office, he helps Kang solve a firearm murder case involving a young man and a foreigner.

When Kim Hee Woo receives his first pay of ₩ 1,000,000 from KMS, he enlists Lawyer Kang’s help in his investment scheme. Thanks to Kang, he makes a huge profit.

Kim Hee Woo may have made a pile of money but his studies suffer. He loses the first position in school and he realises the need for balance in his life. He wins some and loses some.

VERBAL-LINGUISTIC INTELLIGENCE

It is an undeniable fact that good lawyers need verbal- linguistic skills. Kim Hee Woo, the future Top Prosecutor already possesses the necessary skills to fight in court.

Kim Hee Woo’s desire to learn about real estate, while at the university, drives him to observe auctions. He knows that people amass wealth from the sale and purchase of real estate. Observing Woo Yung Soo, a real estate tycoon, in several auctions, Kim Hee Woo is puzzled by his purchase of 5 apartments and 3 villas. Why would he invest in real estate in a flagging economy? Overcome with curiosity, he appeals to the old man to guide him in real estate. His silver tongue which has won him the hearts of many people, stands him in good stead. Impressed with his persistence and determination, the rich tycoon agrees to become his mentor. Woo Yung Soo becomes The Master.

Kim Hee Woo seems to be blessed with many types of intelligences in his new life. His life has been drastically changed. To whom should the young man credit his amazing transformation? His female teacher and her brother, Lawyer Kang; his friends or The Master? It’s difficult to say since he had already learnt from the mistakes he had committed in his previous life.

But, while in high school and the university, Kim Hee Woo has been burying himself in very serious adult matters, with no time for pleasure. Lawyer Kang is convinced that ‘a student should enjoy adolescence too’. No teenager nor young man should be deprived of the joys of youth. For Kim Hee Woo, it’s all work and no play.  He should live a more balanced life.

If Kim Hee Woo were to enjoy his adolescence, which areas should he take pleasure in? Let your imagination run wild.

Imagine Kim Hee Woo as a hotshot rock singer, a fabulous dancer or a catwalk model in a school event or concert. These should spice up his life and put him in the spotlight. Special school events provide opportunities for young people to showcase their talents: Singing Contest. Dancing Contest. Modelling Contest. Speech Contest. School Debate. Publication of a School magazine. There could even be a beauty pageant: Miss Beautiful or Mr Handsome. What about Inter-school / District / National competitions? Surely, Kim Hee Woo would be sensational in them.

Kim Hee Woo already possesses a great number of intelligences that are outlined in Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Director Han could make Kim Hee Woo more than exceptional by adding Musical Intelligence to the list. It would be amazing should Lee Joon Gi be invited to sing his own songs in the drama. If Kim Hee Woo is allowed to render a song or two and flaunt his musical talents, it would improve his biodata. Again My Life would be more special and exciting.

At the end of his high school year, Kim Hee Woo clinches the top position. His hard work has paid off. Since he has so many accomplishments, it wouldn’t be surprising that he wins the Student of The Year award.

Kim Hee Woo is talented in more ways than one. His multiple talents remind us of the faces of a Rubik’s Cube - the many different sides of a superior man.

Again My Life shows us the different faces of Kim Hee Woo. To know a person thoroughly, one has to view him from a multitude of viewpoints or perspectives as in Cubist artwork such as Man on a Balcony by Albert Gleizes or from opposite angles like the kinetic portraits by Sergi Cadenas which reveal different faces when viewed from different angles.
