Historic Occasion: Flower of Evil (2020) Celebrates Duranga (2022) The First Indian Adaptation of A Korean Show

HISTORIC
OCCASION

FLOWER OF EVIL

(2020)

CELEBRATES

DURANGA

(2022)

THE FIRST
INDIAN

ADAPTATION

OF

A KOREAN SHOW

Recently, Duranga was thrust into the limelight when Lee Joon Gi called attention to the Indian adaptation of his 2020 masterpiece, Flower of Evil, the first ever adaptation of a South Korean show by India. The original television series which also stars top-notch actor, Moon Chae Won, is written by Yoo Jung Hee and directed by Kim Cheol Kyu who garnered the Best Director Award at the 2021 Baeksang Awards. The historic occasion calls for a celebration as it is even more remarkable in that the drama market and community of India, the country which has the world’s second largest population, is difficult to penetrate as their showbusiness industry is flooded with talented and handsome / beautiful screen heroes / heroines and icons. It certainly speaks volumes about India’s first choice for adaptation.

The occasion is momentous. Flower of Evil is also adapted and translated into Tagalog by the Philippines. Lee Joon Gi posted an enthusiastic message on Instagram to show his genuine support for Duranga, the 9-episode Hindi television series, ‘Happy to see you (Indian) friends! Looking forward to it.’ Lee, who received two awards at the 2020 Asia Artist Awards for his tour de force performance in Flower of Evil, also demonstrated very strong support for the 32-episode Philippine adaptation of Flower of Evil, ‘I heard about this from my Philippines family. Yeah, I will check this out. And it will be great. Very happy to see you guys.’

The television series, which stars Gulshan Devaiah and Drashti Dhami, would be available on Zee5. It ends with a cliffhanger but a sequel is in the pipeline.

Of all these wonderful tributes, the most interesting is from Aljazeera, the powerful voice of reason, truth and justice. Flower of Evil tops the list of their excellent article, ‘Six Korean Series To Watch Instead of Squid Game’, which brilliantly articulates and affirms the worth of Flower of Evil, the television series and Lee Joon Gi, the leading actor.

And in South Korea, Kim Min Jung, a drama critic and professor, and the drama writer Joo Chan Ok, speak highly of Lee Joon Gi’s performance in Flower of Evil in their articles in Cultura, South Korea’s magazine for the arts and culture. Lee was named 2020 Icon for Drama (Television).

Lakshana N Palat  (Indian Express) praises Lee Joon Gi’s and Moon Chae Won’s performance with descriptions like: 'Lee Joon Gi’s brilliantly complex character', 'emotionally volatile', 'hiding beneath his raw vulnerability', 'frantic urgency', 'the pain of the characters and their emotional turbulence felt visceral', 'nerve-wracking turmoil', 'cheery woman with little quirks that flesh out her character' and so on and so forth.

Dishya Sharma of News18.com also sings praises of the duo, ‘South Korean actors Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won had the world going weak on their knees with the Flower of Evil’ and ‘By the time the 16th episode aired, fans couldn’t get enough of Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won’s chemistry.’

THE INDIAN MEDIA

Zee5 claims that Duranga is a 'Zee5 original'.

What does their 'original' mean?

Duranga is an adaptation of Flower of Evil, so how can it be their original

The question is: Is Duranga an original, an adaptation or an original adaptation?
