Paik’s Spirit, the six-segment Netflix original talk show hosted by Paik Jong-won, features a rich crop of South Korean celebrities including international award-winning actor Lee Joon Gi, top variety show producer Na Young-seok, beautiful actors Kim Hee-ae and Han Ji-Min; star volleyball player Kim Yeon-koung; and popular rappers, Jay Park and Loco. Paik, together with his celebrity guests, takes the viewers on a journey into a new dimension of traditional Korean liquor, culinary delights, compelling personal stories and Korean myths. The impression one gets from the show is that like most Koreans, the celebrity’s drink of choice is soju, a spirit made from rice.

It is unquestionable that Paik Jong-won has pulled off a coup by inviting Asia’s golden boy, Lee Joon Gi whose segment, by far, is the most interesting and informative and is worth waiting for. The globally famous multihyphenate megastar who has received many international awards including those from China, USA, Taiwan, Japan and Singapore, has given stunning performances in his television serials including Flower of Evil (2020), Lawless Lawyer (2018) and Moon Lovers-Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016).

The duo swap entertaining anecdotes about life, Lee’s workaholic lifestyle and experiences, and Paik’s personal life. Lee’s casual remark about wanting to share the liquor and food information that he has gathered from Paik with his global fans is amusing to the celebrity chef. Lee is good at telling stories and during the course of drinking too much alcohol, he has apparently let slip that he hasn’t started dating. The senior showbusiness expert jokingly offers to arrange liquor-making sessions for Lee to meet up with potential mates.

The liquors that they drink include Bokdanji, Seoul Night, Dugyeonju and Gamhongroju.

The expression on Lee’s face when he takes a sip of Gamhongroju tells us that the liquor is not for ordinary drinkers.
At the end of the show, Lee fixes his eyes on the viewers while raising his glass towards them. The teasing look on his face makes one wonder what's on his mind.
