LEE JOON GI

ON

FLOWER OF EVIL

IN

THE

HARU HANA

2021 AUTUMN

INTERVIEW

Lee Joon Gi, the multi-talented Asian icon, shared some interesting changes in the way he perceives acting in his Haru Hana 2021 Autumn interview. Lee has held the world audience captive with his tour de force performance in the masterpiece, Flower of Evil, which has soared to the top of television in 2020. The global adulation and accolades that Lee, his castmates and the production staff of Flower of Evil have received far exceeded those for other television series. The television series in which he portrayed Do Hyun Su, a psychopathic character, could be viewed as another major turning point in Lee’s career.

Despite the great emotional depth of the character that he was hesitant to portray in Flower of Evil, Lee realised its great potential - its uniqueness and the possibilities of broadening his range as an actor. He rose to the challenge of playing the character but some credit should go to Moon Chae Won who had encouraged him to take on the project. Unlike in the past, he refrained from checking the monitors during the filming of Flower of Evil. Instead, he left everything in the capable hands of the director, Kim Cheol Kyu.

Flower of Evil has made a resounding impact on the global Kdrama audience. The audience, including the influential Chinese viewers who have highly rated the series, are convinced that the critically acclaimed television series has set the benchmark in performance, scriptwriting, direction and cinematography not just in South Korea but also internationally.

Lee was named 2020 ICON for DRAMA by Cultura, a South Korean magazine for the arts and culture and he also received 2 awards from Asia Artist Awards in 2020 for his tour de force performance. Kim Cheol Kyu, a directing genius, won the Baeksang Best Director Award. It is regrettable that Moon Chae Won who has also been lauded for her sterling performance and Yoo Jung Hee, the scriptwriter, who has been praised for her dazzling creativity, were not rewarded. The poignant song, Feel You, sang so soulfully by Shin Yong Jae, has also left a strong impact on the audience.

The fact that the cast and the production staff of Flower of Evil have not been well rewarded is unutterably sad. Heartbreaking.

It is strange that the two television series which have plagiarized Flower of Evil seem to be doing extremely well. Who says plagiarism doesn't pay?

Is there hope in times of injustice?

The announcement that ABS-CBN had bought the rights to Flower of Evil and would be remaking or adapting the television series must be enormously flattering to the South Korean cast and production staff. It is an acknowledgement of the excellent quality of the television series. It proves that Flower of Evil is, by far, more superior to other South Korean television series that had been broadcast not just in 2020 but also 2021. This victory proves that the cast and the crew have stamped their mark in the show business industry.
