The Wedding Rings of Baek Hee Sung and Cha Ji Won in Flower of Evil

THE
WEDDING RINGS
OF
BAEK HEE SUNG
AND
CHA JI WON
IN
FLOWER OF EVIL

Fans, victims of merciless teasing, were yet again whipped into another whatchamacallit when Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won flaunted ‘their wedding rings' in separate photographs. Ah, a paroxysm of excitement. The two leading stars make no secret of the gold bands on their ring fingers that they will display in Flower of Evil.  Baek Hee Sung, a psychopath and Cha Ji Won, a homicide detective, played by Lee and Moon respectively, will be joined in holy matrimony in the upcoming drama.

Cha Ji Won (Moon Chae Won), as romantic tradition dictates, wears her wedding ring on the fourth finger of her left hand. Surprisingly, Baek Hee Sung (Lee Joon Gi) does the opposite; he wears his on the same ring finger but on his right hand. It is said that in Korea (and in some European countries), a wedding ring can be worn on the fourth finger of either hand.

A wedding ring is a symbol of eternal love, devotion and commitment. The Baeks, like most couples, would probably have promised to love and cherish each other, and to grow old together.

Since psychopathy is one of the themes of Flower of Evil, it would be difficult to evade the probing questions that have fuelled the interest of the Internet community. If one assumes that a psychopath could be mentally unbalanced, one would not fault Baek Hee Sung if he is not able to fulfil his wedding wows. Why, he isn’t even ‘human’ after all!

As for the rational, logical, sensible but probably hardened homicide detective Cha Ji Won, would her wedding vows be binding on her?

Would the discovery of her husband’s dark secrets scupper their dreams of a happy marriage?

Would her promise ‘of loving him and growing old together’ ring hollow if she has no intention of keeping it?

Is there hope on the horizon? Would Cha Ji Won be able to rise above the circumstances and prove that she is more human than most humans?

Drama aside, in Korea, ring etiquette or ring placement, is interesting; it is fascinating enough to require detailed discussions. Different countries have different cultural beliefs and practices.

It seems that if a ring is worn on the THUMB, it signifies that the wearer is single and not in a relationship.

If a ring is worn on the INDEX finger, it denotes mere friendship.

A ring worn on the MIDDLE finger is either a good luck charm, or an indication that the wearer is determined to make a success of his career and is not easily sidetracked by anything.

If one is open to change or new beginnings, one should wear one’s ring on the LEFT PINKY. A ring on the RIGHT PINKY symbolizes an achievement of one’s dreams or wishes.

Lee Joon Gi’s charming habit of donning rings is a matter of common interest among his fans. His massive investment in jewellery, particularly rings, arouses a lot of curiosity. Once, he even wore eight jaw-droppingly beautiful rings. His fans wonder if his constant practice of wearing different rings symbolises, in any significant way, a change or a new development in his life. Perhaps, there are some secret meanings that they are not aware of.

Fans can’t wait to find out the details of Baek Hee Sung’s backstory and the whys and the wherefores of his psychopathy. TVN’s Flower of Evil, the most highly anticipated 2020 drama, is written by Yoo Jung Hee, directed by Kim Cheol Gyu, and produced by Studio Dragon and MonsterUnion. It will be broadcast on every Wednesday and Thursday in July 2020.
