At the end of 2017, Lee Joon Gi travelled twice to Okinawa, Japan to film his scuba diving and parasailing programme as well as to shoot for a photobook (two volumes) with The Star Magazine team. A Japanese filming crew documented his experiences in Okinawa. Those thrilling experiences in Okinawa, with some of Lee's other activities, were incorporated into a variety show for the Japanese audience. The project is referred to as ‘JG Island’. The Japanese Home Drama Channel would broadcast the show together with a series of Lee's dramas.

Okinawa Island is the largest of the Okinawa Islands and the Ryuku Islands of Japan. The name Okinawa means ‘Rope in the Open Sea’, a fairly apt description of this long stretch of islands between the four main islands of Japan and Taiwan.

Naha is the administrative capital of the Okinawa and Naha Airport is the main transportation hub for the Ryukyu Islands.

One interesting fact about Okinawa is that the martial art of Karate is Okinawa's most famous export worldwide.

Lee Joon Gi’s trip to Okinawa was definitely an adventure-filled trip as he went parasailing for the first time. He took some time off during the photoshoot to do what he had always wanted to do.

Parasailing was a challenge to him. Looking at Lee having fun, one would not have suspected that he was anxious about heights had he not confessed to it. Though it was his first parasailing experience, the ‘flying’ part seemed like second nature to him.

Most people experience a certain degree of natural fear when exposed to heights. It is not so much the fear of heights but the fear of falling or of being disconnected from the earth that worries them.

For Lee Joon Gi, the whole point of parasailing was to lose that anxiety and have a lot of fun. When he was getting strapped and hooked up to the giant parachute right before the lift-off, Lee was laughing heartily. When he was released, he shot up at a rapid rate. He was apparently having the time of his life when he floated in the air.

The only thing lacking in the video was the viewers did not get to see him on his way down and when he was being reeled in.

Scuba Diving. It was reported that it was also Lee Joon Gi’s first diving experience in Okinawa.

Apparently, the diving instructor was amazed by Lee's enthusiasm and ability to learn the ropes of diving very quickly. His fluency in Japanese also made a strong impression on him. Lee Joon Gi was also praised for his physical energy and athletic abilities; he was a natural in the sea and took to diving like a duck to water.

Lee had acquainted himself quickly with the diving in the sea in Okinawa despite the inclement weather. The project was almost hindered by the strong typhoon winds.
