The Sword of Aramun, the mythological war epic, considered to be the first ancient Korean High Fantasy story, is a groundbreaking masterpiece television series. It speaks of mysterious super races - the superstrong blue-eyed-blue-blooded Neanthals, the powerful purple-eyed-purple-blooded Igutus and the extremely strong aquatic Momo tribe, who all lived among red-blooded human beings. Emerging from the wars fought by the various groups of people is Eun Seom, who becomes Inaishingi-Aramun, the hero of the story. According to visiting Professor Hyunseon Moon, Graduate School of Performance, Video and Animation, Sejong University, ‘We want heroes who embody the principles and provide direction for a desirable world in which we should live.’ And Inaishingi-Aramun, a man of high moral principles, is the hero and role model for us in the modern world. The spectacular television series is led by Lee Joon Gi, the super-talented and outstanding Lead Actor in the drama series. Playing dual roles with great passion and emotion, Lee Joon Gi has brought the hero and his identical twin brother to life in the groundbreaking war drama. The coming together of talented actors, who include Shin Sae Kyeong, Jang Dong Gun, Kim Ok Vin and supporting actors, an outstanding director and an equally amazing photographer, is a cause for celebration. Breathtaking performances. Spectacular action. Powerful direction. Iconic cinematography. This is the power of television. The Best in Television.
And Lee Joon Gi, the fantastic television actor and action star, is a real life hero and role model for us. He is passsionate about his work and works hard to portray the incredible hero of the story. He practised fiercely for his athletic role and even ‘lived on the set’ to ensure ‘character immersion’. When the television series opens, the war begins with the blowing of the war horn. One is stunned by the images of Inaishingi, the athletic Igutu beast, running ahead of his foot soldiers. The excitement rises as the audience watches Inaishingi, the leader of the Ago army, running at a punishing pace, whizzing past enemy soldiers and slaughtering them with precision.
The urgency
and the desperate movement of the protagonist is captured by the moving
camera. One notes the tremendous sense of speed of Inaishingi’s footstrides and action.
His features are convulsed with fury and a fierce determination to succeed.
He, an Igutu warrior who had gone berserk, fearlessly takes a straight path to his
enemies.
Lee Joon Gi works
his magic in this war scene. He is athletic and pumped up with testosteroe.
The urgency and desperation on his face, as he flies up the horse of the
enemy soldier, is palpable.
The soaring
movement with extraordinary kinetic grace is preternaturally spectacular.
Tugging at the enemy soldier, the savage beast skillfully pulls himself up,
grabs his neck, turns around to brutally slice the horseman's neck.
The Igutu leader makes an
amazing sight as he flies in the air, having been pulled away by gravity
from the running horse. Then, as Inaishingi glides lyrically down, he
executes a thrust with his sword into the heart of the soldier. They tumble onto the ground. The powerful thrust, a very savage action to ensure the
death of the enemy, fills the audience with dread and horror. It is savage and brutal.
Poetry in motion.
The spectacular action sequence, a sensual war dance, has a surrealistic
quality. Graceful and beautiful.
The Sword of Aramun, the energy-charged High
Fantasy-Action-Mythological-War landmark
masterpiece television series led by Lee Joon Gi, the outstanding lead actor, exemplify ‘The Best in Television’ in 2023-2024. Lee
Joon Gi, not only portrays the hero Aramun but also his identical twin, Saya,
who is a minor hero in the war epic.
The Sword of Aramun, not only refers to the legendary weapon
said to possess the power to reshape the mythical realm of Arth but also, the Reincarnation of Aramun, the hero of the story (portrayed by Lee Joon Gi), who is the
instrument of the ancient god, Aramun Haesulla, to create a new world.
The drama, written by Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yeon, helmed
by Kim Kwang Sik, and filmed by Choi Chan Min, has captured the
imagination of the audience and touched the viewers emotionally and intellectually. The Sword of Aramun opens with
the prophecy concerning the three characters who feature importantly in the
story: Eun Seom (Sword), Saya (Mirror) and Tanya (Bell). The three Children
of Prophecy would join forces to end the tyrannical world of Tagon.
AMAZING DIRECTION, WRITING AND PHOTOGRAPHY
The production quality is top-notch under the direction of Kim Kwang Sik. Myth and imagination interwine. The intricate mythology and world building of the writers is amazing. The audience is invited to explore the complexities of leadership, war and its devastating effects, identity, religion and dieties, race and royalty. The photography is nothing short of stunning.
ARAMUN THE HERO A COURAGEOUS, PASSIONATE
AND MULT-TALENTED LEADER
The television series tells us of Inaishingi, a man of legendary courage and passion in the battlefield; he never flees from enemy soldiers. Instead, rushing headlong into the centre of the action, he fights with great valour and courage, fighting amidst the carnage. He is nothing short of superlatively heroic. His courageous leadership inspires the Ago warriors under him to fight valiantly regardless of their disadvantaged position. Despite the lack of new bronze swords and horses, the Ago warriors from disparate tribes are fiercely devoted and loyal to him.
It is amazing that Inaishingi is able to shape the coalition
of vast ranging, diverse tribes of underarmed savage men into an enviable and
strong fighting force who is able to vanquish the tyrannical Tagon and his
formidable army.
In one of the wars, the tremendously brave leader turned around
to distract the pursuing legendary Daekan Force when his pathetic forces
retreated. He himself even aimed his arrows at the enemy general, Saya whilst
on horseback.
The athletic and multi-talented Lee Joon Gi is spectacular as
Inaishingi, the leader of the Ago coalition. Inaishingi, himself, is talented
and has many incredible physical skills; the courageous warrior could run speedily, leap up powerfully or somersault gracefully. He could ride a horse skillfully, stand on a galloping horse, leap and
shoot arrows at the same time, and wield a sword. Such a warrior fits the image
of a model leader and hero.
Those who question Inaishingi’s super powers or divinity would
be shocked to learn that he can easily catch an arrow flying in his path with one hand.
THE HORSE WHISPERER AND FRIEND OF THE FOREST
Whatmore, Inaishingi can even communicate with the divine horse, Kanmoreu and even speak to the forests - non-human characters, in this great epic.
PEACE AND UNITY
A MESSAGE AGAINST WAR The Sword of Aramun is a war story that thrillls and yet enrages the audience. It is exciting but also quite violent, gruesome and shocking at times. The television series offers the audience a fascinating look at Inaishingi-Aramun, one of the greatest characters in K-television, a symbol of heroic courage who rises as a formidable leader from the clashes, tremendous slaughter, and an insightful look at the tragedy of war. Thousands die like flies. Wars in Arth galvanise the disparate tribes to form a coalition under Inashingi. The tyranny of Tagon, the king of Arthdal, had inflamed the feelings of rebellious tribes who had suffered defeat at the hands of the tyrant. Arth, a fractured continent had come together and heal with the promise of unity and peace under the leadership of Inaishingi.
THE ENFORCER OF RULES AND DISCIPLINE
A NEW WORLD ORDER
Inaishingi, a war
leader of a big coaltion of tribes, has to deal with many problems of war. He
sets down rules against pillage and the collection of the spoils of war. Plunder is
not allowed in Inaishingi’s world.
When one of the
tribal men contravenes his rules on war, those around Inaishingi have no
illusions about their chief’s mercy. He is cold and unforgiving. His followers must be incorruptible. Imagine a great leader kneeling in front of the mother and child who had been robbed and
requesting forgiveness. Warriors have to be disciplined. As Inaishingi walks off coldly, the offender understands Inaishingi's great outrage so he immediately
commits suicide. The Ago leader stops for a moment to digest the
situation before he continues determinedly on his way. He has demonstrated the new world he wants to build.
RACE, RELIGION AND ROYALTY
The television series is powerful as it shows that the people find light under the leadership of Inaishingi-Aramun in the never-ending conflicts and wars. Inaishingi, like most formidable leaders, has a woman behind him and she, Tanya, is the kingmaker. When she suggests to Inaishingi, in the burial chamber of Aramun Haesulla, that he is the prophesied Reincarnation of Aramun, one of the unifiers of the Arth continent, he is adamant that he is not. He is also resistant to the idea of kingship. The idea of being the King of Arthdal, replacing the tyrannical Tagon, is obnoxious to him. Tagon is macho and violent; he uses his evil power and strength to dominate and bully those who are weaker. Inaishingi is the opposite of Tagon who seeks power for his own sake. The evil king has amassed a huge amount of power by subjugating many rebellious tribes and overrunning the continent of Arth. Sexual imagery in the television series in the form of the phallic symbol by the beach, hints of the overwhelming domination of men, particularly men like the cruel Tagon. There is poetic justice when Tagon dies at the hands of Inaishingi.
Inaishingi has to be compelled to be king. If he didn’t accept
the throne, the whole continent of Arth would be thrown into disarray and
people of different races and religions would continue to be in conflict with
each other. Inaishingi is the only leader who could command the respect of
everyone. He turns the tables on his enemies and opponents. Guided by Tanya,
his humble, disarming words show that he is an exceptional man. Making a
humble and selfless decision to ascend the throne, he changes the mindset
of his enemies and turns them into friends. Some of Tagon’s former ministers are co-opted into his circle of leaders to help rule the people. A new dawn arrives with peace and
unity in Arth under this great leader.
The Sword of Aramun not only talks about what it means to be a great man who is heroic and courageous. Having courage, Having a heart. True masculinity. Inaishingi is tall and powerful, fearless, athletic and on the battlefield, he is courageous and strong. He, a warrior of legendary courage and passion, fights with great valor in the battlefield. He is an icon of manhood and manliness. He lives with his subordinates, leaders of different tribes for years. He is tough, big and strong but he is not a bully; his size and strength is used to protect the weak. Inaishingi is selfless, surrendering himself for a larger purpose, giving up life in the service of others. Inaishingi is not a hero without flaws. He is a savage warrior who can be vengeful. He wanted to kill Mungtae who had betrayed them in the past but Dalsae pleaded for his life. The sacrifices that Inaishiingi made for the people make them grateful to him. The Sword of Aramun brings back the sense of the heroic. Inaishingi's stories are inspiring and the viewer’s life is immeasurably richer because of them. When it comes to true greatness, Inaishingi-Aramun is tough to beat. He is a an extraordinary leader and a great role model. The television series also explores the dark side of the human soul, doubts and despair, guilt, redemption and salvation through Saya, Inaishingi’s identical twin, who is also portrayed by Lee Joon Gi. Blind to his own debasement and drawn irresistibly to the allure and the bait of power offered to him by Tagon, Saya, the general of tha Arthdal army betrays both his twin brother and Mubaek, the Arthdal commander. Unlike his twin brother, Saya has not matured emotionally; he is an insecure and self-centred little boy. The mythological epic is replete with many moral lessons; it speaks of retribution when Saya is compelled to commit suicide to avoid killing Tanya. He, a minor hero, is saved, and though physically weak, he does not hesitate to fight Tagon to save Tanya yet again.
The series evince one particular quality - that of surrendering oneself to a higher purpose. Inaishingi-Aramun, a hero and role model, surrenders himself to serve the peoples of Arth. The writers claim their place as one of the powerful narrators of stories that have never been told before and one of fiction’s most courageous figures. The Sword of Aramun restores to the audience a sense of the heroic. The television series promotes the idea that there are lives that are worthy of emulation. Having role models and heroes is important. It is an important way to help a new generation know the purpose of their lives and to shape a nation.
The series dazzle audiences and critics alike. They are floored by Lee Joon Gi’s acting and action performance; his performance is pure award stuff. The writers have created a drama of uncommon power. The drama is moving, intelligent, insightful and rich in mythological cultures. This definitive work is incredibly detailed in world building and the description of mythological cultures. The Best in Television.
