The Sword of Aramoon: The Powerful Athleticism and Sensual Physicality of Lee Joon Gi

THE SWORD
OF
ARAMOON

THE

POWERFUL

ATHLETICISM
AND

SENSUAL
PHYSICALITY

OF

LEE JOON GI

The Sword of Aramoon, an ancient high fantasy-action epic, which is led by the sterling Lee Joon Gi, is a spectacular television series which focuses on a full-scale war. The high-octane series, which is filmed like a movie rather than a television drama, is visibly a masterpiece that would surely stun the world. The recent teaser centres on Eun Seom’s awesome athleticism and physicality, including his martial prowess, horse-riding and sword-wielding skills. The unique, groundbreaking television series, which is first of its kind, not only in Korea but probably, in Asia, also stars Shin Sae Kyeong, Jang Dong Gun and Kim Ok Vin.

In the Eun Seom video, Tagon says, ‘Finally, it’s coming to an end!!’ What is coming to an end? Does he expect that the war between the Ago Union or coalition of 30 clans under Inaishingi Eun Seom, and Arthdal under his control would soon be over?

Probably, the two enemies have been fighting a long and protracted war.

THE COLOUR GREEN

When we think of war, we think of the colour, red, to signify wrath, violence, brutality and bloodshed. But In this Eun Seom teaser, the director has chosen to splash a sea of green and blue all over the screen. Green is the dominant colour in nature and the dominant colour in this teaser. The variety of shades of green includes: Fern green. Forest green. Olive. Army green. Mint. Dark bluish-green.

The greenish throne room. The bluish-green rock. The dark bluish-green sword embedded in the rock. The green grass waving in the breeze. The olive faces of Eun Seom, Tanya, King Tagon and Taealha, his queen. The green fields. The green cliffs. The greenish water.

We are given the impression that the final war against Arthdal will lead to its collapse. The death of Arthdal. Green signifies a new dawn with the emergence of a new kingdom or possibly, an empire. There will be a rebirth of Arthdal with a new king. Green symbolises growth, freshness, progress, rebirth, renewal and new beginnings.

There is some white to denote the purity of Tanya’s religious sect.

THE COLOUR BLUE

The Sword of Aramoon that Eun Seom successfully yanks out of the rock in this teaser is rendered a dark bluish-green. The blue in the dark bluish-green colour symbolizes power, integrity, responsibility, authority and seriousness.

Eun Seom, The Sword, who is the Instrument of the god, Aramoon Haesulla, has inherited the magical sword. Empowered with godlike authority, he is delegated the responsibility to use The Sword to destroy Tagon.

THE FIGHT TO CONQUER ARTHDAL

THE DEFINING MOMENT

The defining moment has come for Eun Seom. It is now or never. The battle-seasoned warrior and his coalition of Ago men stand their ground even though they are not armoured nor armed with swords. The loyal soldiers are imbued with full confidence in Eun Seom whom they believe to be the reincarnation of Inaishingi, a god. They are prepared to seize Arthdal from Tagon, the false Aramoon Haesulla.

Queen Taealha is surprised to see Eun Seom, the doppleganger of her adopted son, Saya.

When the queen, Taealha, questions Eun Seom about his identity, the legendary Ago warrior proudly reveals that he is none other than Inaishingi.

She must be startled that he calls himself Inaishingi, the god of the waterfall, justice and the Ago Union.

THE POWERFUL ATHLETICISM

AND

SENSUAL PHYSICALITY

OF

LEE JOON GI

Riding on his magical horse, Kanoreu, and armed with his magical sword, Eun Seom, who is fired with enthusiasm and driven by dogged determination, goes for the blood of Tagon.

The hunting panther, Eun Seom, with a sword in one hand, leaps high up. The leap is so spectacular and swift that even the passing horseman could not react in time to save himself.

Inaishingi Eun Seom’s incredibly powerful legs were flying in the air. The Arthdal horseman has no fighting chance against the swift descending sweep of Eun Seom’s steel blade that sheared through his body. Blood spluttered from the body. If the viewer had blinked, he would have missed the incredible moment, when the blade came down.

The soldiers of the enemy group must have turned pale on witnessing the powerful leaps of the Inaishingi and the thrust of his sword. They had not expected to confront a god-man with superhuman powers. Were they thinking of fleeing the battle scene?

Lee Joon Gi, the driving force of the television series, The Sword of Aramoon, must be lauded for his astoundingly fit, strong body, and powerful athleticism and physicality. His formidable on-screen presence shows that he is ahead of the curve, setting incredibly high standards in performance in the showbusiness industry.

We don’t know when Lee Joon Gi became Eun Seom or slipped into his skin. But, what we know is this: Lee is certainly a force to be reckoned with. The lightning-fast, high-octane movements are sensual and sexy. What a masculine warrior!

The director, Kim Kwang Sik, cinematographer Choi Chan Ming and perhaps the Editing team must have enjoyed making the viewers shift their allegiance from Eun Seom to Saya and back to Eun Seom again.

But both Eun Seom and Saya are firm favourites of the audience; they tug at everybody’s heart.

THE JUST WAR

WAGING A WAR TO END WAR

The problem of war and peace is one of motivation.

Many wars are immoral but this war that Eun Seom has launched against the power-hungry and tyrannical king, Tagon, is just.

The evil king has caused unrest and rebellion in his kingdom, which is swallowed up in tryanny.  There is a fear that he might spread his tentacles all over Arth and impose his tyranny once he has brought all the regions under his control. Is Tagon doomed to fruitless wars of his own forging?

Inaishingi Eun Seom has come to seize power and conquer Arthdal. Though both are half-barbarian species, Eun Seom wants, perhaps, to implement his dream of peace and social harmony.

The war is justified. He is waging a war to end war.

In the final war, the Arthdal army looms large; it has come out of the woods howling so terribly that it might have frightened the Ago soldiers. They are armed and ready. The wear their iron armour and iron helmets. They have swords or knives of metal. The Ago soldiers prefer spears.

The bloodbath begins; the slaughter is unstoppable unless Tanya, the High Priest and religious leader of Arthdal intervenes. The aftermath of the war would be unspeakable.

CONQUERING ARTH

Inaishingi Eun Seom wants the word to be spread.

His conquest would stretch ‘from the Nortsan River to Arthdal, from Arthdal to the White Mountain, from the White Mountain to Atturad.’

Besides Arthdal, he would wage war on Notsam, White Mountain and Atturad.

Atturad is a city in Arth. The city, which is located beyond White Peak Mountain, had once been burnt by Tagon.

White Mountain is the home of the Asa Clan.

Is Eun Seom saying that Arthdal is not the final conquest in his master plan?

Eun Seom is able to successfully wrest The Sword from greedy hands. He is the rightful owner. When lightning strikes at the rock in which the sword is embedded, Eun Seom is able to pull it free. The electricity from the lightning flows through his hand, making a spidery web on it.

Eun Seom has waged many wars. In the summer, in the Autumn, in the winter, in the spring.

In one scene, rain pours down in a deluge. Or, are the soldiers riding through the driving snow?

Arthdal burns while the graceful and gentle Tanya and her fellow priests dance to the gods to pray for peace. She must also have prayed for Eun Seom’s safety as she wished him a decisive victory over Tagon.

Eun Seom, the ferocious and savage warrior and Tanya, the peace crusader. Is there passionate love between the two?

Finally, Eun Seom, with the magical Sword in his hand, rides Kanmoreu, the magical horse, into the battle field. It is the end of Tagon.

Helmed by award-winning director Kim Kwang Sik and written by award-winning writers, Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yeon, The Sword of Aramoon is produced by Studio Dragon. The Dream Team also includes Choi Chan Ming, the Photography Director / Cinematographer; You Seok Moon, the Lighting Director; Kim Tae Seong, the Music Composer, Cho Sang Kyung, the Costume Director and Art Director, Cho Hwa Sung, all of whom are award winners in their own right. The Sword of Aramoon will surely be a blockbuster and a chart-topper with its talented cast and crew.

The Saturday-Sunday television series will premiere on tvN, TVING, Disney Plus, Hulu and Star Plus on 9 September 2023 at 9:20 p.m. KST.
