THE TRANSFORMATION

OF

LEE JOON GI

The character teaser of Eun Seom played by Lee Joon Gi in the television series, The Sword of Aramoon, has just been released. It is a portrait of steely courage, dogged determination, amazing athleticism and savagery. What is most stunning is the dramatic transformation of Eun Seom, portrayed by Lee Joon Gi, from a heroic leader to a savage Igutu warrior. The hero is a character driven by an overwhelming desire to be Aramoon Haesulla. The image of Lee Joon Gi's face is quite fearsome. It is an image of Lee which has never been seen before in his dramas. The sight is unnerving. Contorted with rage, his eyes bespeak of savagery and his mouth is twisted with cruelty. He is a man driven insane to save Tanya and the Wahan tribe. After all, Eun Seom is his Neandal father’s son.

It is stunning that Lee Joon Gi’s voice seems to have also changed. It is a strange sensation to listen to the rich timbre of his voice. Yet, the blend of loudness and roughness is an exciting change for his new barbaric character. He looks savage juxtaposed with the beautiful, gentle and virtuous Tanya played by Shin Sae Kyeong.

A CLOUD HANGS OVER ARTH

Eun Seom, the Igutu warrior identifies himself to be from the Wahan Tribe. The people consider him to be The Inaishingi and the leader of the Ago Alliance.  He brings his war to Arth. In his battle against Tagon, the king of Arthdal, Eun Seom promises not only to fight for Tanya and Wahan but also lay claim to the title of Aramoon Haesulla. Dogged in his grim determination to keep his promise, he launches a ruthless and ferocious war against Arthdal.

Tanya fears for the safety of Eun Seom. She knows that the war would lead to the total annihilation of one of the warring parties. But, Arthdal might feel the brunt of Eun Seom’s savage attack. Capitalising on her powerful position as High Priestess, she attempts to end the war and bring about peace in Arth.

In the thrilling character teaser, Eun Seom is driven to fight in order to defend his Wahan people and save Tanya. He would win if strong desire and tremendous courage is coupled with brilliant strategy.

THE ASTOUNDING COLOURS

The Sword of Aramoon showcases a variety of astounding colours ranging from blue, orange to green. The camera showcases the silhouette of the Igutu warrior speeding towards Arthdal. The silhouette moves as silently as the savage moves. And, he, with the unerring instinct of his half barbarian heritage, moves with the supple ease of a splendid tiger.

The subsequent scenes come alive with the changing   colours, and the interplay of light and shadow. The different lighting and colour tones give the rock surfaces, wooden sheds, tall grass waving in the wind a diversity of textures.

THE UNIQUE MASK

Trying to hide his identity, the savage wears a unique mask made of thin reeds but the flimsy mask would soon be ripped off from his face by a sword wielded by an enemy.

THE LEAP

OF

THE SUPPLE AND ATHLETIC

WARRIOR

Like a ferocious panther, Eun Seom leaps from the rooftop of a shed and right into the hearts of the drama viewers. His suppleness is amazing. He seems to have sailed from the roof like a glider. It must be child’s play for him. But, it is a stunt that makes the heart hammer fast.

THE UNMASKING

OF

THE IGUTU WARRIOR

In his clash with an unknown fighter, a sword is thrust to whip the mask from Eun Seom’s face. Blood streams down his face and over his mask. It is not clear if it is purple blood. Will it reveal that he is a purple-blooded Igutu?

The light that emanates from Eun Seom’s expressive eyes tells of the dogged determination that drives him towards Arthdal.

DRIVING AMBITION

After strengthening his military might, Eun Seom drives his people into a war that is aimed at vanquishing Tagon.

In the shadows and gloom of the night, Eun Seom, in his commanding voice, announces his intention to claim what is his, the title of Aramoon Haesulla. He tells his followers to spread the word.

I, Eun Seom of Wahan, will become Aramoon Haesulla!

Bursting into a roar and thrusting his sword sideways, he gallops headlong to meet his enemies.

 THE BATTLE OF WITS

Eun Seom fights an Arthdal enemy. The igutu’s blade catches the moonlight. He swings his sword with appalling speed at his opponent. The wits and fiendish speed of the Wahan man more than matches the quickness of the Arthdal man. Who is that Arthdal man?

LIGHT AND SHADOW

THE CHIAROSCURO EFFECT

The camera plays with light and shadow. The contrasting colours of black and white bring out the striking chiaroscuro effect. The two men, who are ferociously fighting in shadowy surroundings, stand out in the dramatic lighting. The tension and suspense is etched out on their faces.

Eun Seom’s eyes flash angrily at the other man. If the Igutu’s raging eyes flash purple in the images, it cannot be seen clearly.

A PORTRAIT OF SAVAGERY

A portrait of savagery. The wolfish instincts of the half human and half-Neandal, a half-breed, have come to the fore.

What is crystal-clear about the sweat-drenched warrior is his eyes show that he is crazed with wild determination. His wet tangled black mane frames his face. His eyes blaze with unquenchable savagery.

It is a portrait of a savage and murderous Eun Seom, whose face is contorted with rage. The stunned audience must have shivered and their blood must have turned cold by Eun Seom’s savage, fearsome glare and unearthly voice. His ferocious eyes are arrows that pierce through the darkness. He hollers and froths at the mouth.  When his lips part, a thunderous voice edged with steel causes the dust to eddy around the place.

Eun Seom’s unforgettable face comes alive as the camera plays with light and shadow.

GUILTY PLEASURES

However, the viewers must have been pleasantly surprised to be able to feast their eyes on Eun Seom’s bulging biceps and triceps. One can imagine his steely muscles rippling under his tanned skin.

This is probably one of the many guilty pleasures that are awaiting the audience in The Sword of Aramoon.

Those who are not in the habit of ogling men must be forgiven for gaping or gawking at him.

The Sword of Aramoon, which is directed by Kim Kwang Sik, and written by Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yeon, will premiere on tvN, TVING and Disney Plus on 9 September at 9:20 pm KST.
