Part 1 Lee Joon Gi: The Undisputed King of Korean Entertainment and Global Cultural Icon

PART 1

LEE JOON GI

THE

UNDISPUTED

KING

OF

KOREAN

ENTERTAINMENT

AND

GLOBAL

CULTURAL

ICON

In the dynamic and competitive landscape of Korean entertainment, few stars have transcended the boundaries of fame to become true acting and cultural icons. Lee Joon Gi is one such figure - a rare phenomenon who combines unparalleled acting versatility and artistic skills, martial arts prowess, global influence, and humanitarian impact. His achievements surpass those of his peers, his seniors and juniors establishing him as the definitive pinnacle of Hallyu. Lee has been bestowed many media and cultural titles, including THE LEGENDARY HERO by Ellemen Hong Kong (2018), a cultural honour never granted to any celebrity. Waves China declares that Lee is MORE THAN OUTSTANDING (2021) and he is officially proclaimed as the ICON FOR DRAMA by Cultura South Korea (2020), confirming his role in Flower of Evil as a defining figure in the television industry. The multihyphenate is also listed by Cultura South Korea in 2021, as one of 100 important personalities from different fields in South Korea. The multi-dimensional legacy of Lee Joon Gi demonstrates why he, as a once-in-a generation artist, is the undisputed King of Korean Entertainment and a Global Cultural Icon.

Who could dream of rivalling Lee Joon Gi? There is NO comparison. To challenge him, an artist would need to simultaneously revolutionize cinema, maintain decades-long global relevance, command concerts that move entire cities, win international awards and Korea’s top acting award, produce photobooks or magazines, sing in a world sport event, be spoken highly of by local or international organizations and inspire global philanthropy - all while doing their own action stunts.

Lee has a deep international trophy chest with box office, landmark shows with cultural impact, longevity, and staying power.

The multihyphenate personally recorded a Korean language-learning series in in five languages - Korean, Chinese, Japanese, English, and Spanish, making the Korean language accessible to fans and people worldwide - a feat unmatched in K-drama history. Lee Joon Gi is the pinnacle of Hallyu.

His military enlistment and discharge rose to a level of turnout unheard of for actors or any celebrity. 500 fans went for his enlistment and about 2,000 fans were present in the freezing cold for his discharge. Other actors may have fans but have No Historic Fan Moments. There is no comparison.

Lee Joon Gi is the King of the Hallyu Wave; he is a living legend whose influence and devotion from fans place him in a league that no one else has ever reached. His global fandom is the most loyal in K-Drama History. He receives royal treatment all year-round. Fans organize annual luxury gift projects, send snack or coffee trucks and food catering for the cast and crew in his filming sites, and coordinate international celebrations for his birthdays, drama premieres, and Christmas. Airport events are like red-carpet premieres. Every concert tour sees airport crowds in the hundreds, just to greet or send him off.

Lee Joon Gi’s connection with his audience goes far beyond conventional celebrity fandom. His military service (3 May 2010 - 16 February 2012) was a defining chapter that augmented rather than paused his career.

500 fans, an unprecedented number, from Korea, Japan, China, and Southeast Asia gathered at the Nonsan Training Centre for his military send-off.

Over 2,000 fans endured overnight freezing weather to welcome Lee Joon Gi back from service in 2012, an unprecedented demonstration of loyalty recognized as a historic national event by the Korean media. It was a historic fan turnout unmatched in Korean entertainment.

Both enlistment and discharge were well recorded by the media. No other Korean actor or celebrity has commanded this level of local and international fan devotion during military enlistment and discharge. This underscores the unique depth of Lee Joon-gi’s global fandom.

The record has to be set straight with irrefutable proof of  Lee Joon Gi’s military era as an unparalleled military legacy and global supremacy. Most stars, in stark contrast, disappear into obscurity during enlistment. Japanese and Chinese media continued publishing feature spreads about him during his service - proving his global market value never dipped. This scale of devotion is unprecedented in K-drama history, proving his deep emotional connection with audiences.

The South Korean Army even produced an official documentary about Lee Joon Gi’s service, an unprecedented honour reflecting his exemplary commitment and the respect he garnered within the armed forces - unmatched by peers, seniors and juniors whose enlistment passed quietly.

Lee Joon Gi's military service wasn't just a hiatus; it was another era of dominance, where he broke records, won awards, and achieved honours no other Korean celebrity has matched.

In stark contrast, the enlistment and discharge of other actors or celebrities saw no such massive public gatherings. Neither did they win such a number of awards or accolades.

During service, Lee Joon Gi earned many ‘Best Soldier’ awards like Army Training Centre Award, Army Chief of Staff Commendation, Ministry of Health & Welfare Award, National Defence Commission Chairman’s Achievement Award, Commendation from Head of Duty Support, Commendation from The Director of Defence Public Relations Service and so on.

Lee Joon Gi is a true Cultural Ambassador, the unsung cultural hero, whose impact extends well beyond entertainment into global humanitarian efforts, fuelled by his devoted international fanbase. This shows his global influence. While other celebrities chase fame, Lee builds bridges through music, acting, and philanthropy. He is the only actor whose fandom actively improves lives worldwide - not just streaming his dramas, but changing real communities.

His local and global fans have been organizing charity events including large-scale ones proving his fandom doesn’t just adore him, they follow his example of giving back and they carry out charity projects in his name. This level of organized, international fan-led charity work is UNMATCHED by any other Korean star.

This isn’t fan service; it’s a global cultural movement. No other Korean star’s fandom has ever achieved such breadth.

Lee Joon Gi’s fans have funded life-changing projects like critical clean water systems and rebuilding schools in Cambodia and Nepal, tree planting project and disaster relief in China, and contributed to charity projects in China, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Bangladesh, Iran and elsewhere.

His Japanese fans have made donations of books to hospitals in Korea, supported organizations such as Doctors Without Borders and coordinated large-scale charity events - all directly inspired by Lee’s values.

There are too many charity or philanthropic projects that it is impossible to discuss them here.

LEE JOON GI
AND
HIS GLOBAL FANS

HEARTS OF GOLD

A HISTORY
OF
GIVING BACK
TO
SOCIETY

Thanks to Lee Joon Gi’s passionate and generous global fans, he has made news again with his varied charitable donations in the month of May. It is not easy to overlook Lee’s superstar stature and reputation as an influencer in Asia and the RoW. The multi-hyphenate has donated 100 million won and 15 tons of rice to charity, some with the help of his global fans. Lee Joon Gi, together with his fans, has a history of giving back to society which can be traced back as far as The King and the Clown in 2005 when he took South Korea and the international movie world by storm.

https://www.instagram.com/p/ByDeLeVnSdZ/

The news that Lee had donated 60 million won and 5 tons of rice to the Korea University Medical Centre on 23 May has whipped up a storm of ongoing interest in the print, broadcast and online media. The contributions, past and present, of the compassionate, humble and unfailingly cheerful superstar with a sunshine smile, have probably been talked and written about more than those of any other showbusiness personality.

The donation of 60 million won is paid out from his own pocket, but the 5-ton rice donation comes partly from the ‘fan rice’ or ‘rice wreaths’ contributed in his name by his global fans. The Vice-President and Chief Medical Officer, Lee Kihyeong, announced that the donations would be used to treat the less privileged domestic or foreign patients or those who are living in medically underserved areas.

Furthermore, Lee contributed another 5 tons of rice to Good Neighbours. The rice would be sent to 5 social service centres for disadvantaged people. In the past, Good Neighbours, besides having received 24 tons of rice, had also accepted sizable stocks of ramen and bottled water from Lee and his fans. Good Neighbours is an international humanitarian and developmental non-government organization (NGO) in Korea. The organization, whose focus is the well-being of all people especially children, and community development, supports projects in 35 countries.

On 6 May, Lee Joon Gi, had also generously donated 40 million won, the proceeds from the sale of the limited edition of Penegreen’s Mask Pack. As Penegreen’s brand ambassador, he had collaborated with the cosmetic brand in ‘The Green Project’. The proceeds would be used to provide aid to poor families in Korea.

Apart from these, he had also made another personal donation of 5 tons of rice to the Cheongra Cathedral of the Society of St Vincent de Paul. It is a heart-warming gesture to the poor of the Roman Catholic community.

All in all, Lee and his fan’s donations in the month of May amounted to an impressive sum of 100 million won and a substantial 15 tons of rice. Lee had humbly declared that he was happy to have been given the opportunity to share the love that he had received from many people.

Having a love for others is contagious, and Lee Joon Gi, while exerting a big influence on his fans, has helped shape the culture of social consciousness among his fellowmen. Being very much on the same wavelength, his global fans have consistently rallied to support him with their generous donations to the poor. These often come in the form of ‘fan rice’ or ‘rice wreaths’ particularly at the time of the opening of his new dramas, pop concerts or charity projects.

However, these contributions do not tell the whole story of Lee Joon Gi’s charity work. Lee’s list of contributions, which dates back to 2006, is a perfect showcase of the superstar and his fans’ generosity and compassion to those who are less fortunate. Unlike other stars, it is Lee’s inspiration and influence that is the driving force behind his fan’s contribution to the poor and disadvantaged, and not the other way round. Lee is genuinely drawn to charitable works and so, it is not hard to imagine that Lee’s heart of gold has endeared him to his legions of fans who have no hesitation in following his footsteps.

Unsurprisingly, the positive influence that Lee has exerted over his fans in the field of charity is unrivalled in Asia. If there is any true measure of a man, it is revealed by what he gives back to society and his influence on others. His global fans’ hearts of gold are a testament to the influence of the changemaker superstar. In an industry that is recently convulsed by drug scandals and misadventures of famous stars, Lee Joon Gi’s clean image, coupled with his positive societal contributions, is a breath of fresh air to South Korea and the RoW. Lee Joon Gi stands out prominently not only as South Korea’s national treasure but also a global role model for young people.
