The King And The Clown, the defining movie of the 21st century which opened in 2005, is regarded as the cinematic masterpiece in Korean cinema history. The movie is a timeless triumph of storytelling, direction, and cultural impact. Two decades later, the classic stll stands as the greatest Korean movie. The legendary movie, directed by Lee Jun Ik and stars Lee Joon Gi, resonates as a landmark of cinematic history that has shaped the course of filmmaking in the 21st century. And its 20th anniversary is the perfect time to reflect on its legacy. The 20th anniversary will be celebrated at KT & Sangsang Madang Cinema in Seoul.  Director Lee Joon Ik and Lee Joon Gi will be attending the celebratory event on 21 June 2025 (Saturday).

It's been two decades since the universally revered movie made its debut. The movie is about 2 clowns and their desperate troupe of entertainers who put up comedic skits that poke fun at the royal court. Gong Gil, a beautiful and effeminate clown, portrayed by Lee Joon Gi, attracts the attention and interest of the psychologically unstable King Yeonsan. The king goes on a rampage to kill his enemies after watching the skits. The final ending of the movie still gives the audience the chills.

The immortal performance of Lee Joon Gi that defined a generation is unmatched, unforgettable, and deeply loved. Though Lee was in his twenties at the time of the shooting of the film, his performance is nothing short of iconic. The portrayal of Gong Gil, the tragic clown, by Lee Joon Gi, is both emotionally powerful and deeply nuanced. Lee delivers a hauntingly vulnerable performance with quiet strength and emotional depth. He captures the inner turmoil, moral conflict and fragile hope of a hapless and helpless character standing at the edge of darkness.
