Recently, Lee Joon Gi's dramas were discussed in a joint conference 'Asian TV Dramas and The Popular Mind in South-east Asia' between the College of Liberal Arts, De La Salle University (DLSU), The Philippines and Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok. The paper, 'Exploring Moral Integrity and Justice in Lee Joon Gi's Dramas: Basis For Values Discussion in Class' was presented by Digna Delfino and Jomari Echano of DLSU on 22 May.

In 2020, Lee Joon Gi was named the 2020 ICON for DRAMA by CULTURA, the highly respected South Korean magazine for culture and the arts, for his tour de force performance in Flower of Evil.

It isn't surprising that some biased media are suspected of shortchanging the truth when it comes to certain Asian drama productions. They would downplay what they should highlight but shine a spotlight on those that they shouldn’t. But fortunately, the French StellarSis Awards 2021’s nod of approval of Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won, the leading actors of the 2020 suspense-melodrama masterpiece, Flower of Evil, is a raison de célébrer, a cause for celebration.

Lee Joon Gi, who plays Do Hyun Soo-Baek Hee Sung, one of the best characters ever written for television, is the Meilleur Acteur or Best Actor while Moon Chae Won is the Meilleur Actrice or Best Actress for her role as Cha Ji Won, a homicide detective. Other than the prestigious wins, Kim Ji Hoon, who has a special mention for Meilleur Mechant or Best Villain, has impressed the audience with his portrayal of the real Baek Hee Sung, a disorganised killer in Flower of Evil.

For the discerning viewers of television dramas all over the world, the combination of awesome direction, stellar leading actors and cast, quality scriptwriting, good editing, beautiful OSTs, brilliant cinematography and other wonderful aspects of production is hard to resist. The unique masterpiece suspense-melodrama, Flower of Evil, is the best Korean drama of all time; it is a runaway global success and it doesn’t even go head-to-head with any rival. It is in a league of its own. After all, the suspense-melodrama can be seen as a landmark. Being the first of its kind, it is an intriguing contradiction in terms of genres as suspense and melodrama are polar opposites.

Lee Joon Gi's status as the foremost actor in South Korea has been permanently and effectively cemented after he was named the 2020 ICON (Drama) by Cultura, the prestigious South Korean magazine for the arts and culture for his impressive performance in Flower of Evil. Lee, Moon Chae Won, his leading lady, who plays his screen wife; Kim Cheol-Kyu, the director, and Yoo Jung-Hee, the scriptwriter, have been lauded many times over for the triumph of the 16-episode drama.

The completely engrossing Flower of Evil is unsurpassed in terms of details; watching a Kim Cheol-Kyu-Lee Joon Gi-Moon Chae Won drama is a demanding but extremely satisfying and enjoyable experience. When watching the drama, one must be focussed or one would have missed some significant aspect of the drama. Kim Cheol-Kyu has perfected every ingredient of the magical suspense-melodrama - from the miserable tale of the mentally unbalanced Do Hyun Soo, the thrilling action scenes, the impassioned speech of Do Hyun Soo against the injustice and prejudice of a cruel society, the heartbreaking tears and romantic married life of the unlikely cop-fugitive couple, the conspiracy to defraud the Do siblings of their inheritance by the village head, the enigmatic symbolisms, the soulful OSTs and the impressive cinematography. Above all, the drama is a monument to the sheer lovability of the cast, including Jung Seo-Yeon who plays Baek Eun-Ha.

The story is about a web of intrigue that wraps itself around Do Hyun Soo, the son of a serial killer, who is robbed off a normal life. Oblivious of being a victim and pawn who is entangled in the web of lies, corruption, prejudice, and irresponsibility, he soon resembles a puppet who is moved hither and thither by unseen hands. It is difficult to understand why he suffers such a grim and cruel fate but, the fate of those who are responsible for his horrendous suffering is sealed; they get their just deserts.

The Flower of Evil scriptwriter has tapped into mental health issues to create the dramatic tale involving the son of a psychopath. It is a drama that does it all; it gives a valuable and critical view into the difficulties faced by Do Hyun Soo, the vulnerable central character with mental health issues, who is at the mercy of lie brokers. It makes the viewers think critically about heredity and environment issues that drive vulnerable individuals to the brink of disaster. When it is discovered that his father is a serial killer, everyone turns against Do Hyun So since he ‘resembles his father’. The murders, known as the Yeongsu serial murders, happen in the Gagyeongri village. The villagers' strong, cruel disapproval of him  and the exorcism rites bring him to the edge of a mental breakdown.

Flower of Evil is a telling criticism not only against a cold and apathetic society who marginalise people with mental health issues but also the corrosive power of petty rural corruption, mindless traditional cultural practices and the herd mentality. Corruption and greed find their way very easily into the village. The naïve and gullible Gagyeongri villagers, participate in endless shamanistic exorcism rites arranged by the corrupt village headman whose intention is to siphon off the Do siblings’ inheritance. The Gagyeongri villagers, like the proverbial sheep, blindly follow the village headman’s biddings. Civil servants, like the psychiatrist or counsellor and the police, are not spared the criticism; their inefficiency, lack of accountability and credibility come under close scrutiny.

What makes Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won so remarkable?

Lee Joon Gi has received many awards, accolades and recognition for his tour de force performance in Flower of Evil. The drama is given a powerful emotional charge by the acting of Lee, whose face registers the complex emotions of the character down to the tiniest nuance.

One thing is crystal clear, no other actor in 2020 can measure up to Lee Joon Gi. The Do Hyun Soo character he plays hides behind a façade. He seems strong, smiling and loving; it is just an elaborate pretence. Under Do Hyun Soo's mask is very vulnerable man and Lee has brought many moments of poignantly conveyed emotional detail into his performance that has broken many hearts. With his thrilling action scenes, Lee Joon Gi has been responsible for the audience’s hearts hammering away with each exciting moment.

The outgoing Cha ji Won portrayed by Moon Chae Won, falls hopelessly in love with the introverted Do Hyun Soo. In fact, she threw herself shamelessly at him but the suspicious Do Hyun Soo rejected her. In the course of the convoluted story, however, they move from antagonism to love. Moon Chae Won’s presence in many melodramatic moments have reduced the audience to tears.

The leading actors are extremely guilty of not only of keeping the viewers in an agony of suspense but also bringing copious tears to their eyes throughout the suspense-melodrama.

Make no mistake about it, the two formidable actors work their sheer romantic magic on the audience. The deeply moving and poignant Do Hyun Soo-Cha Ji Won moments in Episode 11, 15 and 16 are the some of the major highlights of the drama.

The two actors, the director and scriptwriter, the rest of the cast and production staff deserve the awards, accolades and recognition accorded to TVN’s 2020 Flower of Evil. The global fans expect more to come.

The Baeksang Arts Awards, established in 1965, will be celebrating its 57th anniversary this year. The comprehensive ceremony awards the cast and the production crew of three entertainment sectors: Television, Film and Theatre.

Nominations for the 57th Baeksang Awards were announced on 12 April.

Lee Joon Gi has clinched the title, 'The Most Popular South Korean Actor in Turkey in 2020'

A popularity survey involving 12 popular South Korean actors was conducted among Turkish K-Drama lovers by Beşiktaş Medya Group in 2020.

Lee, who garnered the most votes, has recently received global rave reviews and accolades for his brilliant portrayal of an emotionless ‘psychopathic’ personality in the suspense-melodrama, Flower of Evil (2020).

The multihyphenate superstar from Asia has captured global attention and imagination since he catapulted to fame and popularity after starring in the movie, The King and The Clown (2005). He has proven his talents and commercial worth again and again in his movies and dramas. His other famous works include Time Between Dog and Wolf (2007), Joseon Gunman (2014), Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016), Lawless Lawyer (2018) and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, one of the highest grossing movies in 2017.

Unsurprisingly, Cultura, the South Korean magazine for the arts and culture, has recently proclaimed Lee Joon Gi as the ‘2020 Icon’ (Drama) for his latest success, Flower of Evil.

Flower of Evil has made the landmark achievement as the globe's first 'SUSPENSE-MELODRAMA'.

The unique plot of the 16-episode drama is as riveting and relentless as it is melodramatic. The drama, directed by  Kim Cheol Kyu, an international award-winning director, can be described as ‘a high-octane suspenseful thriller-cum-an intense, emotional tale of love and devotion’.

Lee Joon Gi's fans might like to know that Turkey, a country which possesses one of the world’s most beautiful and picturesque natural landscapes, is a mandatory travel destination.

Lee Joon Gi has another two accolades added to his impressive record of achievements for 2020. He tops the list of ‘Viuniverse Awards 2020, an event organised by the Viu Team. Lee is exalted with the title of ‘Best Leading Actor’ and Flower of Evil is proclaimed as the ‘Best Drama of 2020’.

Lee’s fans are over the moon about the latest acknowledgement and they feel Lee Joon Gi deserves all the highest accolades that come his way.

The Viu Team revealed that 'results from their Viuniverse Polls were gathered from members of their Facebook Group who voted for the Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Leading Actor, Best Leading Actress, and Best Drama of 2020. While some results were head-to-head, others won by a landslide.'

In awarding Lee Joon Gi with ‘BEST LEADING ACTOR’, the Viu Team must have found it easy to voice their tribute.

‘Lee Joon-Gi gave an absolutely amazing and hair-raising performance in Flower of Evil! The way he was able to shift from psychopath to an emotional husband and father who just wants to protect his family – he deserves all the awards! Add to this, his good chemistry and synergy with Moon Chae-Won just made the show more electrifying every week.’

Wow. There will be a lot of rejoicing.

Flower of Evil is the Viu Team’s choice as well as Viuniverse Poll Winner. The Viu Team has this to say about FLOWER of EVIL, the BEST DRAMA of 2020.

‘An amazing feat for Flower of Evil! Amazing directing, writing, and acting from Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won! With this trifecta of story elements, it’s no surprise that people tuned into the show every week excited to see what happens next!’

One couldn’t agree more. Well said.

Lee Joon Gi, who had received 269,329 votes for the Top 10 Most Popular Overseas Drama Stars in 2020 Weibo 5th TV Series Awards (China), is ranked the 7th Most Popular Overseas Drama Star in China.

However, he gains a dominant position as the Third (3rd) Most Popular South Korean Drama Star in the awards.

Other than the South Koreans, the awardees preceding him are Thais.

In the same TV Series Awards, Flower of Evil garnered 598,476 votes, and whilst being placed third in the Top 10 Most Popular Overseas Dramas, the trial-blazing Suspense-Melodrama masterpiece, is ranked the NUMBER ONE (1st) South Korean Drama.

Interestingly, the first and second ranked overseas dramas, which are ‘Boy Love’ (BL) or LGBT dramas, are from Thailand. The BL genre features gay romances.

It is not surprising that in a dissertation on Mapping KPOP’s Fandom, Media and Performances by a researcher from the Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, Lee Joon Gi, along with 10 South Korean Idols, was listed in the TOP 50 IDOLS IN CHINA in the July 2020 and March 2021 data.

FANTASTIC. Korean Updates.com seemed to have spoken thus: ‘Flower of Evil is the Toast of South Korea’ or else they wouldn’t have conferred so many Korean Updates Awards 2020 on Flower of Evil.
