TALKS ABOUT

THE HEART-RENDING ENDING

When the globally loved television series, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, which stars Lee Joon Gi as Prince Wang So and Emperor Gwangjong, and IU as Hae Soo, and helmed by Director Kim Kyu Tae, ended its broadcast in 2016, the audience were not only reduced to copious tears but were also spiritually devastated. Who would have thought that the tragic, poignant ending of the South Korean TV masterpiece would have made the audience yearn longingly for Wang So and IU to appear in a sequel. Nothing happened during the following years but fans don’t know the real reason why. If certain actors are not available or refuse to return for a second season, the production staff could look for replacements for the modern version of the show. Recently, the writer, Cho Yoon Young, talked about the tragic ending of the show in an interview.

The series has been sold for more than $400,000 per episode to the Chinese streaming platform  Youku, totaling over $8 million and thus became the most expensive Korean drama ever sold at the time, surpassing the record previously set by Decendants of the Sun and Uncontrollably Fond, which were sold to China for $250,00 per episode.

Did Good Data Corporation spring a surprise on the South Korean public recently? In a report by Osen based on the data produced by Good Data Corporation, SBS’s Moon Lovers - Scarlet Heart: Ryeo ranks THIRD out of the ‘Top 50 KDramas 2016’.

The Wang So-Hae Soo couple is also ranked as one of the best drama couples.

KBS’s Descendants of the Sun is ranked first and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds, also from KBS, is second.

Therefore, it means that Moon Lovers – Scarlet Heart Ryeo is SBS’s ‘Best Drama in 2016’. The announcement has provided no unexpected surprises for the fans of Lee Joon Gi and his drama, Moon Lovers – Scarlet Heart: Ryeo as they have staunchly believed right from the beginning that it is the best 2016 drama and are now proven 100% to be correct.

As for the other SBS dramas, Doctors ranks seventh (7), Jealousy Incarnate is tenth (10), The Legend of the Blue Sea is number 13 and Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim is ranked 26.

One good thing about the Good Data report is that it has, at least, prevented Moon Lovers - Scarlet Heart: Ryeo, its cast and production staff from being victimised. When one thinks of it, many of the MLSHR thespians and staff have put in so much time, energy and odd hours to produce such a stupendous drama only to be steamrolled by the unfair and vicious online commenters and nearly crushed by the ambiguous and debatable drama rankings.

In the article by Osen it was noted that Good Data Corporation had carried out surveys based on online netizens' response to the dramas, blogs, SNS etc* to arrive at their results. It is said that the top-ranked dramas are the most discussed dramas.

Descendants of the Sun is reported to have obtained 646,903 points (3.367%), followed by Moonlight Drawn By Clouds (1.954%) and then, Scarlet Heart (1.781%).

That Scarlet Heart is beaten by DOTS and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds is quite interesting. The difference between MDBC and MLSHR is negligible. Scarlet Heart is far too close for comfort. Would Lee Joon Gi’s fans believe the data? They are perhaps waiting to protest.

According to Wikipedia in 2016, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo has set a South Korean drama record with 2.5 billion views in China. It appears that the site has been scrubbed clean of the evidence. Has the site been vandalised?

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo had also garnered 73% (Not 70% according to Wikipedia) of drama viewership in Singapore and Malaysia in 2016.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo garnered 73% of the viewership on Channel One (ASTRO) out of the four Korean channels in Malaysia and Singapore. This is an exceedingly high percentage.

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds / Love In The Moonlight were simultaneously broadcast by their broadcasting stations in the same time slot.

According to a HelloKPop report based on ONE TV Asia news, the drama ‘has attained new heights with Scarlet Heart being named the top-rated and Number One South Korean drama series in Singapore and Malaysia.

What was most astounding but was music to the ears of all of Lee Joon Gi’s fans was that Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart: Ryeo had also surpassed the ratings of KBS2’s Descendants Of The Sun, SBS’s Doctors and KBS2’s Moonlight Drawn By Clouds in Malaysia and Singapore!

In another report, Virginia Lim, Senior Vice President and Head of Content, Production and Marketing, Sony Pictures Television Networks, Asia said, ‘The outstanding ratings bear testimony to Scarlet Heart’s strong appeal to fans of both Korean and Asian dramas in the region.’

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo was also the top drama in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

According to the Inquisitr, ‘It should also be noted that Scarlet Heart: Ryeo is the second most watched K-drama in North and South America exclusively through DramaFever. A spokesperson for the company made it known that Scarlet Heart: Ryeo has been their No. 2 show on the popular streaming site with over two million views since its premiere. The only K-drama surpassing it is Cinderella and Four Knights.’

Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo also made an impact on Naver TV cast.

According to Naver, ‘the SBS drama, Moon Lovers – Scarlet Heart: Ryeo (MLSHR) has won the Grand Award of Korea Global Brand Awards in recognition of its role in the cultural exchange between China and Korea.’

The award has been presented by the Korean Association of Marketing Corporation since 2013 to acknowledge the contributions to the cultural exchange between Korea and China.

MLSHR has been acknowledged to be the Hallyu ambassador in leading K-culture in China. The great Hallyu buzz that the drama has created in China has solidified K-culture’s grip on the Chinese audience.

Due to Lee Joon Gi and MLSHR's massive popularity in Taiwan, Lee Joon Gi was presented with the Best Actor 2016 Award by Taiwan’s KKTV.

Globaltimes reports, ‘On its premiere, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo placed first in the topical index among Korean TV series,’ Yuehua Cheung, the general manager of overseas market development center of Mango Entertainment, one of the show’s investors and producers, told the Global Times, citing data based on analysis of cable news and Web searches in South Korea.

“It shows that Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo has high recognition and influence among young Koreans. After watching the Korean version, many Korean audiences have turned to the Chinese version, becoming interested in the Chinese history and culture,” said Cheung.
