In a few weeks’ time, it would
be the Third Anniversary of Flower of Evil which is directed by Kim Cheol Kyu
and written by Yoo Jung Hee. The melodramatic thriller masterpiece, starring
Lee Joon Gi, Moon Chae Won, Jang Hee Jin and Seo Hyun Woo, aired on tvN every
Wednesday and Thursday from 29 July to 23 September 2020. Recently, Lee Joon Gi and some of his former FOE co-stars met up with Director Kim Cheol Kyu for their third anniversary reunion at the director’s amazing house.
Some excited fans wonder if they are collaborating again on a future project. Moon Chae Won, Jang Hee Jin, Kim
Ji Hoon were there. Was one of them Kim Hee Ae, who played Gong Mi Ja, the high-strung
and morally conflicted mother of the psychopath, Bae Hee Sung? She looks a
bit different, younger perhaps. Yoo Jung Hee’s face has been hidden by
different emojis by the actors who uploaded the photos onto the Internet. Last year, Lee Joon Gi
celebrated Christmas eve with Moon Chae Won, Jang Hee Jin, Seo Hyun Woo and Kim
Ji Hoon. Jang Hee Jin was Lee Joon Gi’s co-star
in The Scholar Who Walks The Night (2015). Lee played Kim Sung Yeol, the beautiful scholar-vampire while Jang played the love-sick Soo Hyang, the vampire’s confidante. Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won
became co-stars for the first time in Criminal Minds (Korea) in 2017. They
played Kim Hyun Joon, a SWAT-EOD officer, and Ha Sun Woo, a National Criminal
Investigation officer-cum-Behaviour Analyst respectively. The two officers were brought together to track
down violent criminals. It was reported that Lee Joon Gi
and Kim Ji Hoon became friends during their army days. Unlike some other tvN dramas which
had been aggressively promoted globally particularly, on Netflix, Flower of
Evil, which is directed by Kim Cheol Kyu and written by Yoo Jung Hee, was
only available in a few countries on Netflix in Asia. Later, it was made
available to the global audience by other streaming companies. In a twist of fate, it received
tremendous local and global approval and tons of accolades. The cast,
particularly Lee Joon Gi, Moon Chae Won and Kim Ji Hoon, held the audience
  spellbound. Lee Joon
Gi, received innumerable praises and accolades from around the world. Many writers,
critics, members of the media and showbiz organizations all over the world not
only praised Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won’s amazing performance but also the
  amazing television series. Lee Joon
Gi had the honour of being named 2020 ICON for DRAMA by Cultura, the South
Korean magazine for culture and the Arts. Lee Joon Gi received 2 awards from AAA in 2020. Given the enthusiastic global response towards Flower of Evil and the tour de force performance of Lee Joon Gi, he, not the other actor, should have been given the Daesang at the AAA in 2020 and also at the Baeksang Awards in 2021. Flower of Evil is a unique,
intriguing tale. It speaks of Do Hyun Soo, portrayed by Lee Joon Gi, being labelled as a wierdo when
young by ignorant, naive and simple-minded neighbours. Traumatised by the revelation
that his dead father was a psychopathic serial killer, Do Hyun becomes
psychologically damaged and withdraws into his own world. But the villagers, who would not leave him alone, torture him with their regular shamanistic rituals. Suspected to be a murderer, he
flees his village and becomes a fugitive on the run. With the help of his
fake father, he changes his identity to that of Baek Hee Sung's (Kim Ji Hoon) and goes under the radar. Do Hyun Soo vanishes
without a trace. Wearing a mask of sanity, he is
able to hide his psychological instability. A turning point in his life is
when he meets Cha Ji Won, a female detective who falls madly in love with
him. Their perfect married life falls apart when Cha Ji Won, played by Moon Chae Won, investigates a
series of past murders. In 2021, Aljazeera, known for its truth
and transparency, highly recommended the series to the world. It was at the
top of their list. https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2021/11/3/six-korean-series-to-watch-instead-of-squid-game The 2020 tvN Flower of Evil was
adapted from the script by two countries, The Philippines (same title) and India
(Duranga), and their television series premiered in 2022. The two countries have been followed by the Thais who are doing the same with the 2018 tvN Lawless Lawyer. Lee Joon Gi's global stature as an actor has thus risen a few notches.   It was a historic occasion in South Korean showbusiness history as it was the first time that a South Korean television series had been adapted from the original script by the Indians. The Indian market is reputed to be very difficult to penetrate. It is also the first time that a Korean drama has 2 foreign adaptations. The other Flower of Evil adaptation is the Filipino Flower of Evil. Lee's legal-action television series, Lawless Lawyer, has also been adapted from the script by the Thais. Or probably, it is a remake. It has not been broadcast or streamed. Director Kim Cheol Kyu received
the Best TV Director Award at the Baeksang Awards in 2021. Baeksang 2021
Everyone has a seed of evil in them. The way that seed shows itself is what determines whether that person is good or bad. - Director Kim Cheol Kyu- Flower of Evil |
