Thunderous applause for Lee
Joon Gi at the 2024 K-Drama Fes with Studio Dragon in Chiba, Japan on 12
October highlighted the fact that his globally-loved K-Dramas have made a
great impact in Japan. Lee enthralled the audience with his wit, charm, humour,
charisma, winning smiles and laughter. His powerful descriptions of his experiences in
the filming of his award-winning and much-applauded dramas have the audience in
the palm of his hands. Lee was present for both, The
Matinée
(Afternoon) and The Soirée
(Night) sessions of the K-Drama festival, organised by Studio Dragon, Asia's largest drama studio, in collaboration with Apex Pictures, Japan. After each session, he waved and interacted enthusiastically with the
audience while riding in a special trolley around the Makuhari Messe Event hall. Among the outstanding Korean television series that were spotlighted, the global favourite, TVN’s Flower of Evil, dominated the discussions but another globally-applauded TVN television series, the groundbreaking High Fantasy-Mythological-War epic television series, The Sword of Aramun, was also given due attention. Prior to the event, fans had been requested to rank the best scenes of Flower of Evil. The favourite scenes included: Episode 10. The Bridge scene where Do Hyun Su and Cha Ji Won, after a life-threatening incident, decided to face future challenges together Episode 5. The violent Indoor Pool scene where Do Hyun Su bit off the ear of his tormentor Episode 16. The Discovery of a Diary by the amnesiac Do Hyun Su in his workshop which stirs memories of his love for Cha Ji Won Episode 10. The Promise scene. Do Hyun Su fulfills his promise to the tense and worried Cha Ji Won that he would return within 1 hour after his negotiations with a criminal Episode 15. The Cliff scene where the river meets the sea. Do Hyun Su, in his mad rage, tries to kill the real Baek Hee Sung, his arch-enemy There was even the mention of Lee Joon Gi's personal charm and charisma during the show. One also remembers his natural charm and infectious humour during SBS' 2022 Drama Awards ceremony. Lee had played a righteous prosecutor who time-travelled back to his younger self in SBS' awesome 2022 Fantasy-Legal-Action television series, Again My Life, for which the stellar actor received an acting award. Lee Joon Gi also received numerous awards and accolades for his role in Flower of Evil, including the prestigious 2020 ICON for DRAMA presented by Cultura, the reputable South Korean magazine for the Arts and Culture. He was crowned Best Male Asian Star at Singapore's Starhub Night of Stars for his legal role in TVN's 2018 Lawless Lawyer. For his globally-loved role as Wang So, The Fourth Prince and Emperor Gwangjong, in SBS' Moon Lovers-Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Lee received an international award, the Best Actor award from KKTV Taiwan.
Lee portrays one character
with two identities in the unique TVN masterpiece, Flower of Evil. Through a
twist of fate, the mentally unstable Do Hyun Su was forced to impersonate Baek
Hee Sung, whom he failed to know was the evil apprentice of his serial
killer-father. As Baek Hee Sung, he attracted the attention of Cha Ji Won
played by Moon Chae Won whom he married. The globally-loved Flower of Evil,
which is written by Yoo Jung Hee and directed by Kim Cheol Kyu, has spawned
many adaptations by other countries - the Philippines, India and China. Flower of Evil will soon be adapted into a play by the Japanese
and slated to premiere in 2026.
The emcee of the show, Tomoki
Fujiwara, read a letter to Lee Joon Gi from Yoo Jung Hee, the scriptwriter of
Flower of Evil, who not only extolled the actor’s positive personal characteristics (which included his sense of resposibility, thoughtfulness, tireless efforts and rich imagination) but also his amazing
acting abilities. She emphasized that ‘I can’t even imagine Do Hyun Su being portrayed by any actor other
than Lee Joon Gi.’ Lee is ‘The best gift for a writer.’ None,
including the sterling actor, remained untouched. The unforgettable SBS Time-Travel-Historical Fiction-Romance classic, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, an adaptation of the Chinese novel, Bu Bu Jing Xin, also starring IU, which made Lee Joon Gi a global phenomenon, was also given much attention. Lee gave a beautiful rendition of For You, one of the many memorable OSTs of Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. His melodious voice drew deafening applause from the audience.
TVN’s 2023 The Sword of
Aramun, the groundbreaking High Fantasy-Mythological-War Epic with Shin Se Kyung
as the influential and powerful High Priest, showcases Lee Joon Gi’s
exceptional acting and action-martial arts skills in his dual roles as the diametrically
opposed identical twins, Aramun and Saya. Lee's astonishing performance has immensely impressed the critics, the media and
the audience alike. The great success of the 2024 K-Drama Festival with Studio Dragon has generated greater interest in K-dramas. Undoubtedly, the very presence of the intelligent, witty and humorous megastar Lee Joon Gi is one way to ensure a captive audience. The actor's tour de force performance in TVN's 2020 Flower of Evil, TVN's 2023 The Sword of Aramun and his other impressive TVN television series has made the imagination of the audience run wild and stimulated lively discussions about K-dramas on the internet. The fascinating discussions of Lee's unforgettable TVN drama scenes during the 2024 K-drama Fes have also drawn fans' attention to other famous scenes from Lee's impressive dramas from another broadcasting station. The event has been appropriately entitled a ‘K-DRAMA FES’.
