In 2022, when Lee Joon Gi and Shin Sae
Kyeong were cast in their lead male and lead female roles as Eun Seom / Saya and
Tanya respectively in tvN’s 2023 epic Ancient Fantasy-Action
Television Series, the Kdrama community and the public have been led to believe that they were the leading actors and would be given
top billing. The question then is: Why is Lee Joon Gi billed as Number 2 when
he should be the top-billed star in tvN’s promotion of The Sword of Aramoon?
As far as the Kdrama public is concerned, Lee Joon Gi is
the star of the television series and the biggest name and the biggest draw in
the cast. Lee Joon Gi has star power; he is the one that the global
audience is waiting for. He is not only globally famous as a sterling actor but also globally popular. Therefore,    Lee, who rocketed to fame and
popularity with The King and The Clown in 2005, has through the
passage of time, impressed everyone even more with his sterling acting
performance, successful movies and television series, singing concerts, international
and local awards and passionate global fandom. Lee Joon Gi is globally loved,
lauded and well-respected. No other actor, senior or junior is of his calibre!
 
 Lee Joon Gi is second to none. He is the epitome of everything that the Kdrama audience has grown to love about Korean actors. It must be emphasized that Lee Joon Gi and Shin Sae Kyeong, whose credentials are impressive, have been specially brought in to bring the television series to life, to improve its quality as well as enliven and spice it up. Billing is based on star power and Lee Joon Gi and Shin Sae Kyeong have plenty of that.  According to international opinion, Lee Joon Gi ranks above any other actors. Many magazines have heaped lavish praises on the multihyphenate who has been featured on uncountable covers of magazines in Asia particularly, South Korea, China and Japan. Two such magazines have led the chorus of praise for Lee. showered praises on Lee Joon Gi, one of whom is Director Lee Joon Ik, who
helmed The King and The Clown. Lee Joon Ik refers to Lee Joon Gi as ‘A Gift
Sent By God’.      
 Director Lee Joon Ik was reported to have said it at the 17th anniversary event of The King and The Clown which took place at 12 noon on 16 October 2022 at KOFIC (Korean Film Council) in Busan. The director lavishly praised the then rookie Lee Joon Gi for having left an indelible impression as Gong-gil, the clown. ‘We cast him based on his audition. I never thought he would do such a great job. Lee Joon Gi didn’t have any experience yet. Despite all the worries, he did a brilliant job. The 2005 movie sold 12.3 million tickets in South Korea, an amazing feat then and
even now. Its worldwide gross is US$74.5 million. The movie, the director and
the cast, including Lee Joon Gi, won many local and international awards.
  Lee Joon Gi is one of the 100 Korean people from different occupations, who are featured in the 100th celebratory issue of Cultura (October 2022), the prestigious Korean magazine for culture and the arts. Those specially chosen by the magazine are the filmmakers, actors, musicians, broadcasters (all from the showbusiness industry), literary figures, artists and sportsmen who have contributed significantly to South Korea particularly, Korean culture. 
The October 2022 issue is a
milestone for the magazine. The honour bestowed on Lee
speaks volumes about the status of the sterling global actor and superstar.
 
Lee Joon Gi had shared in an
interview that he beat 3,000 actors for his role in The King and The Clown, a
saguek movie. In order to stand out during the tough audition process which took
a month, he did a handstand and split his legs at the end of his audition. His
startling creativity created a powerful impression on the director; he was hired and the memorable sequence was
adopted in the movie.  It was inevitable that Lee Joon Gi would go on to star in many historical or saguek television series in which he would display his sword fighting skills as well as his horsemanship. The saguek television series are Iljimae (2007), Arang And The Magistrate (2012), Gunman in Joseon (2014), The Scholar Who Walks The Night (2015) and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016). All these earned him the title, ‘King of Saguek' or ‘King of Historical Dramas’.

He is labelled as South Korea’s Top Action Star. Lee’s history in martial arts is interesting. His father was the one who insisted that the overly active boy learn martial arts. Lee has black belts (Fourth Dan) in Taekwondo, Hapkido and Taekkyeon. Lee won the Martial Arts Actor Award in 2009 for Time Between Dog and Wolf and Iljimae.  Besides being addicted to Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu which he learnt for Lawless Lawyer (2018), he also loves other martial arts like Chinese Wing Chun. He learnt Muai Thai (Thai Boxing) and Thai Kick Boxing for Time Between Dog and Wolf (2007) and he also showcased his mixed martial arts in Lawless Lawyer (2018) and Again My Life (2022) which are replete with exciting action sequences.

Having impressed many in the industry, it is unsurprising that the Lawless Lawyer actor who has been described by action directors as ‘An actor who is a Stunt Expert’ or ‘Unbeatable Action Star’ has also been labelled 'The Tom Cruise of The East’. The 2018 Lawless Lawyer has been heavily plagiarized by another South Korean television series (2021). In fact, the copycat series, which has been heavily (globally) promoted on Netflix has plagiarized not only Lawless Lawyer but also bits of Flower of Evil (2020). Lee Joon Gi and his television series have been relegated to an inferior position on Netflix. Even, his face doesn't appear on 'You have watched the shows of this actor'. But the story does not stop there. Fact is stranger than Fiction. Lee Joon Gi's 2020 Flower of Evil has also been plagiarized by yet another South Korean television series (2021). It must be clarified that plagiarism is different from remakes or adaptations.
 Although Director Kim Cheol Kyu praises many members of the Flower of Evil cast for their fine performance, those major scenes in the television series that he emphasizes focus on charismatic Lee Joon Gi as the central character. It hardly needs saying that those explosive and
impressive scenes in the melodramatic-thriller hinge on Lee’s tour de force
performance wth the different members of the cast.

The 2022 Again My Life is another of Lee’s television series which is filled with amazing action scenes. The drama, a masterpiece about moral passion, is a striking insight into many interesting issues like justice, copyright issues, corruption and media lies; it provokes thought and meditation. Lee Joon Gi, The Hallyu King: Then and Now, is extremely popular globally, particularly in Asia. He is passionately supported by his local and global fans. Although Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo did not do as well as Descendants of The Sun or Moonlight Drawn By Clouds domestically, it was a global hit. It was very popular in Asia, particularly, China, the US and elsewhere. In Malaysia and Singapore, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo and Moonlight Drawn By Clouds were SIMULTANEOUSLY broadcast but Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo garnered 73% or THREE-QUARTERS of the views. (Wikipedia, mind you - not 70%, but 73%!). Imagine!

Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo was an overall commercial success compared to
other television series. It was sold at $400,000 per episode while Descendants of The Sun was sold at only $250,000 per episode. Wikipedia noted that the record was broken by Man To Man. It has not been proven or properly verified. If one remembers correctly, the import of Kdramas into China was restricted after Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo because of the THAAD issue. (Where did Wikipedia get such spurious news?)    In the same year, in an American
survey of Kdramas and actors, Lee Joon Gi and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart were
placed 2nd in The Favourite Actors and Drama Charts 2016 respectively. IU or Lee Ji Eun
was placed third. Other South Korean lead actors in those very popular rival
television series of 2016 were nowhere to be found.    None can deny that Lee Joon Gi is The Hallyu King; he continues to receive the same massive kind of enthusiastic and passionate support of his ardent and staunch local and international fans as he did ever since he became internationally popular and famous in 2005. His global fandom, in fact, has increased dramatically.

The book was published in conjunction with the Korean-Thai Chamber of
Commerce (KTCC) fiftieth anniversary celebrations.
In appreciation for his service as an
Honorary Spokesperson for raising Thailand’s profile, Lee received a special
plaque from the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
