Get A Ringside Seat For Again My Life: Watch The Spectacular Performance of Lee Joon Gi in The Awesome First Episode Trailer

GET A RINGSIDE SEAT

FOR

AGAIN MY LIFE

WATCH

THE SPECTACULAR

PERFORMANCE
OF
LEE JOON GI

IN

THE AWESOME

FIRST EPISODE

TRAILER

In the trailer for the first episode of Again My Life which premieres on 8 April, the first thing that pops out of one’s head is Lee Joon Gi’s spectacular performance and also the splendid special effects in the fight-murder scene. Director Han Chul Soo, who helms the adaptation of Lee Hae-nal’s web novel, Again My life, is assisted by Kim Yong Min.

Lee Joon Gi’s exciting broad acting range is showcased in this short trailer – Comedy. Wackiness. Rage. Hubris, Self-Righteousness. Pride. Egoism. Intransigence. Shock. Helplessness. Vulnerability. Tragedy. The complexity of his expressions is amazing. The list goes on. And watch The King of Action at work.

Watch Kim Hee Woo at his most savage. Being violent is Prosecutor Kim Hee Woo’s way of life; it is second nature to him. The fiery, naïve and foolhardy Kim Hee Woo, called The Crackpot Prosecutor or The Wacko Prosecutor, courts danger by clashing with the powerful politician, Jo Tae Sup, played by Lee Kyung Young.

Tragedy is juxtaposed with comedy. Prior to his murder, Kim Hee Woo is hilarious. Martial Arts and Dance. In one tension-filled pre-fight scene that is not in this trailer, the prosecutor seems to be shimmying when in confrontation with some villains. Looking poker-faced, Kim Hee Woo taunts the thugs and acolytes sent by Jo Tae Sup with his funny antics.

Clap, clap hands. Shake, shake. shake. Clap to the left. Clap to the right. Clap, clap hands. Pray.

He then demonstrates his toughness and fearlessness with his martial arts kicks. Then, he whacks a stick on his head, causing it to bleed. But his reckless heroism turns tragic. Betrayed, he is ruthlessly murdered.

It is impossible to weed out corruption with Jo Tae Sup forming unholy alliances with people not unlike himself. Opponents are immediately crushed into pulp.

In another scene prior to his murder, the short-tempered Kim Hee Woo tries to prise some information out of a stubborn suspect. Like all prosecutors who have outsized investigative and prosecution powers, the fearsome prosecutor is not against coercive investigations; he is not beneath using violent, dehumanizing tactics to force the truth from criminal suspects. He resembles a raging bull when attacking suspects in the interrogation room. And, Kim Hee Woo is not easily cowed by criticisms nor people in authority.

In yet another thrilling scene, someone who is peering through the peephole of a door, witnesses to his horror, an unknown victim being spiked by injection. It is assumed that he would probably be thrown down from a great height to make it appear that suicide is the cause of his death.

It is a formidable task to crack down on evil and corruption, particularly, to break the evil dominance of Jo Tae Sup. The prosecutor had failed to nail him in his first life. ‘You should have first destroyed the system built just for me.’ A system built just for him. The deeply entrenched culture and system, one of the main reasons for his power, will be explored in depth in Again My Life.

Kim Hee Woo is subdued, probably drugged and brought to be brutally slaughtered by Dr K.

Kim Hee Woo would certainly confront the root of evil and radically dismantle the system in his second life. He has learnt that anger without strength is meaningless. The prosecutor and his squad of talented assistants will collectively destroy Jo Tae Sup’s political and economic supremacy and his stranglehold on politics and the prosecution. In his previous life, Kim Hee Woo single-handedly tried to bring down the politician. There are traitors within his team of prosecutors and police. But, with his loyal troops who are dedicated to his cause, the transformed Kim Hee Woo would now be sitting on the cusp of history.

THE FIGHT SCENE

ON

A SPECTACULAR FIGHTING RING

The special effects of the fight scene between Kim Hee Woo and Dr K, the assassin, is awesome. The two men are on an elevated circular stage resembling a fighting ring. The ring is flanked on two sides by 2 semi-circular tiered seats and some eerie black buildings with ‘horns’. The circular fighting platform seems to be a 360° rotating stage which is designed to deliver an awe-inspiring experience of the thrilling fight as it rotates, that is, if it rotates. Or, is it a fixed fighting platform and what rotates is the 360° degree rotating audience platform? Or perhaps both platforms are rotating in different directions? The surreal fight, like a theatre performance, is an iconic scene.

Adding to the unusual fight experience, is the presence of some mysterious geometric symbols: a Circle in the middle, a Square on the right and a Triangle on the left (in the form of the staircase). Within the Circle is the letter, H, which could mean Heaven as well as Hell. When Kim Hee Woo is murdered, he goes to hell and then to Heaven where he is resurrected and finally, he is sent back to Earth.

The Square-Circle-Triangle motif is based on a famous painting of Sengai Gibon (1750 – 1837).

Zen painting at Kennin-ji

D.T. Suzuki, who introduced Zen to the West, interpreted Sengai’s painting to represent formlessness and infinity, in accord with his view of emptiness as the essence of enlightenment. Suppress the ego. Discipline your mind.  Understand the oneness of all things. Get back to basic purity (or in Zen terms, Buddha nature).

The founder of Aikido, Ueshiba Morihei, put forward similar ideas. ‘The body should be triangular, the mind circular. The triangle represents the generation of energy and is the most stable physical posture. The circle symbolizes serenity and perfection, the source of unlimited techniques. The square stands for solidity, the basis of applied control.’

The circle-triangle-square is Sengai's picture of the universe.

The unconventional design concept of the stage represents a journey through time and space. The fight takes the spectator from Earth to Hell and Heaven and then back to Earth again.
