A PROMISE MADE A PROMISE KEPT 2019 LEE JOON GI SPLENDOR FAMILY DAY YOKOHAMA 'I HAVE A PRESENT FOR YOU' It is no secret that Lee Joon Gi, the super popstar with outsize passion and incomparable energy, has been performing to sold-out audiences throughout Asia. His world class performing abilities are nicely complemented by an amazing live band and energetic dancers. Like last year's Splendour Family Day, the 5,000-seat National Convention Hall of the Yokohama Pacifico was fully-packed on 14 June. Lee’s Yokohama party concerts have always been hailed as one of his largest concerts in terms of audience. Lee's arrival at the Gimpo International Airport for his trip to Japan on 13 June was widely covered by the mass media, including South Korea's media giants. Lee Joon Gi cut a commanding figure in his rugged street-style clothing. He looked gorgeous in his wholly black outfit which was in strong contrast with his pearly white skin. Tulips, generally, mean ‘perfect love.’ Purity, innocence and humility are associated with white tulips. White also symbolises ‘forgiveness’. While it would also have been fascinating to watch the concert vicariously through videos which are often splashed on the internet almost immediately after his concerts, it is disappointing that no complete videos of even one song have been leaked on the Internet. Lee's Japanese audience have a reputation of being very disciplined; they follow rules to the letter. However, what has filtered through allows us a fleeting glimpse of his concert and it is enough to capture our imagination. The Yokohama Pacifico concert is about as perfect a showcase for Lee’s amazing talents as he could deliver. Amazing songs. Electrifying dances. Dramatic martial arts stunts. Great showmanship skills. There was fresh excitement as Lee Joon Gi had made a prior promise to his audience, ‘I have a present for you.’ Magical and enigmatic words indeed. The promotion poster shows him carrying long, green stalks, each with a striking single white tulip flower. ‘Stunned’ is inadequate to describe the audience response to the stage design, lighting effects and visual feast awaiting them. What the fans had not expected was the breathtaking creativity of  the production team. Everyone who walked into the hall must have been thunderstruck by the image of a ginormous white present wrapped with a red ribbon imprinted on a stage curtain and also, the huge rainbow-coloured gift boxes which had been placed on the stage. The audience must have soaked up the visual feast. A humongous curtain in the shape of a vermillion ribbon framed the stage when the concert started. Was the ribbon a magical illusion? There were some awesome fresh and bold visuals of mammoth proportions. Geometric shapes. Triangles. Hexagons. When Lee Joon Gi appeared, the mystery of ‘I Have a Present for You’ unfolded. It must have dawned on some that their present might be Lee Joon Gi himself! What an ingenious idea! A most amazing present. Others must have assumed that a repackaged concert was the present waiting for them but they were not entirely wrong. The design concept was new. If Lee was the present, one Lee Joon Gi is not enough. How happy it would have been for all his fans if he could be cloned; everyone could bring a clone home!  So, the present was 'Lee Joon Gi and his repackaged party concert'. Lee must have gone to great lengths to make the concert different from the rest. Lee's song list included his fans’ evergreen favourites like ‘For A While’, For You, Now, Marry You, and Together. He also sang the three popular songs, ‘For Us’, Accepted and Can’t Be Slow, from his latest album, which is probably his best album to date. Lee wore a burgundy martial arts uniform. Was that a sort of warm-up for his next action-based drama or movie? Videos taken by fans and others have shown the audience swaying, dancing, shaking animatedly in tune with Lee’s singing. His other Japanese fans also showed their love and warmth by giving him gifts and sending beautifully designed flower stands to adorn the concert venue. More significant though was that Lee's fans had generously donated ¥200,453.00 in Lee’s name to Good Neighbours Japan.
