Criminal Minds Episode 8: Kim Hyun Joon - 'Ho Yau Yeng'

KIM HYUN JOON
‘HO YAU YENG’

JANG GI TAE
TORMENTED

Wallowing in self-pity while thinking about his endless problems, Jang Gi Tae took out his homemade gun and pointed it to his throat. No one had an inkling of the grief that engulfed him.

Ji Soo, his second daughter. The viewers learn later that she was dead. He seemed to be hearing voices of his deceased daughter. Her sweet voice, probably singing a nursery rhyme in a sing-song tone, skipped merrily round and round in his head, torturing him.

Crying, he pounded his head repeatedly against the table.

His estranged wife. He shared a house but not a bed with his bitter wife who had kept him at arm’s length with her withering remarks. She had shared in confidence with a friend, ‘What could I possibly do with him? I’m staying with him because he’s pathetic.’ He shrank at every word that fell from her lips.

Ji Young, his disrespectful oldest daughter. Jang Gi Tae also remembered urging Ji Young to stay at home on the day he committed his first felony, but she ignored him and swiftly scurried away.

His demanding and toxic boss. There was bad blood between him and his boss. Vitriol poured out of the mouth of his boss whenever he called. ‘Where are you? Do you have any idea how much money I’d spent on the hospital director? Quit if you can’t do it.’ His pet name for Jang Gi Tae was 'Scumbag'.

Was it implied that the hospital director could be easily bribed?

Tension and despair clouded his sanity. It was night time. He was so distraught that he decided to go for a drive to release his tension.

NANA WANG
AND
THE ROAD BULLY

Nana Wang was on her way to meet up with Team Leader Kang. In was late at night. The profilers seemed to work at all hours. It would be revealed later that she had some important documents to deliver to the Team Leader.

It was an unfortunate night for NCI’s resident hacker as her poor driving skills had led to her encounter with a road bully. It transpired that she, on impulse, had cut into another driver’s path at the traffic lights.

Carelessness had made her forget to switch on her turn signals. She had suddenly driven her car to the right, cutting sharply across  in front of that car. Her poor road etiquette must have drawn the ire of the driver for he sounded the horn. Shocked, she suddenly slammed her foot on the brakes and her car stalled, obstructing the traffic.

Switching on the ignition, she reversed her car a little and then, continued on her merry way. Her infraction might have caused unnecessary stress to the driver behind her.

The driver behind her seemed to be in a fit of rage. He was driving dangerously and terrifyingly close to her car to intimidate her. Did her erratic driving trigger off any anger in the irate male driver? Was he tailgating her? Perhaps, he was thinking that she was playing the fool on the road.

The car tried unsuccessfully to overtake her and remained a metre of her bumper. It moved erratically – zig-zagging behind her. At one point, he drew level and purposely swerved into her path. Their cars nearly collided. She was frightened out of her wits.

The driver finally succeeded in overtaking her. She nearly lost control of her car.

She was shocked. Her car screeched to a halt at the intersection. He must have driven off.

Her imagination ran wild. She was hopelessly muddled. She began to tremble as she remembered the mad gunman on the road.

‘Oh, gosh. Oh My gosh!’ Although traumatised by the incident, she did not lose her presence of mind.

She immediately called the NCI emergency number. She decided not to continue to the meeting site but turned into another road to wait for help.

But the vengeful driver had turned back and followed her. He had parked his car right in front of her car;  his headlights switched onto high beam. When a figure detached itself from the car, she saw a silhouette rushing towards her car with deadly intent.

Bent on beating the daylights out of her, he held in his hand what looked like a long steel bar which was swinging in the air.

It was rather hard for her to imagine that she was at the mercy of a raging road maniac.

The man made it abundantly clear that he was bent on revenge.

He was wearing a black shirt with a skull, which conjured up quite a frightening image.

Like someone who was demon-possessed, he leapt up onto the bonnet of the car and screamed at her to get out.

Brandishing the steel bar like a club, he repeatedly smashed the windscreen of her car. Typical vicious road bully. His rage pushed her to the edge of hysteria.

Nana Wang’s limbs must have given out. Her screams filled the air. She was cowering in fear. His rage and his lust for revenge was unstoppable.

Hugging her ears with her hands, she tried to blot out the horrendous repeated cracking sounds of steel on the windscreen glass.

‘I’ll kill you today!’ the man thundered.

The passing motorists were astonished by the spectacle and had stopped their cars by the roadside. It was road rage at its worst.

Many drivers were taking pictures with their mobile phones.

KIM HYUN JOON
‘HO YAU YENG’

Sirens sounded. And two cars soon arrived. Kim Hyun Joon emerged from the first car.

The knight in shining armour on his white charger had materialised to save the damsel in distress!

To put it more correctly, Kim Hyun Joon, the handsome and strong NCI profiler had appeared in his sporty blue Hyundai Kona to save Nana Wang!

It was not the time for the NCI man to do his swagger.

Instead, the gorgeous and masculine man stepped out of his car ever so stylishly. Wearing a mask of grim determination, he strode purposefully and confidently towards Nana Wang’s car.

What comes to mind was - Kim Hyun Joo looked ‘Ho Man!’ In the words of Cantonese-speaking admirers, it means ‘So Manly!’ Manly with a capital M. So courageous and strong!

Was Kim Hyun Joon indignant at the murderous road bully? He had a very masculine approach to the situation.

Although he appeared to be calm and composed, anger must have been swirling in his mind. He looked intently at the bully. An unbelievably handsome profiler with stalwart confidence. One did not watch with trepidation but with excitement at the unfolding drama.

Kim Hyun Joon’s look was uncompromising. The masculine profiler had leaned his lean body forward, pivoting his body away from his target, the raging man. And then, he aimed his long kicking leg at the man’s leg.

With the sweep of his leg, he gave the horrible bully a dramatic Taekwondo Spinning Hook Kick! Or whatever kick you want to call it. He was swift and determined.

The spin was tornado-like and his suit jacket was flying frenetically, whipped open by the fast and furious speed of his spinning leg. The man had got STYLE in capital letters! Not only was his kick so magically stylish, his suit was also stylish. His jacket flew open to reveal a fashionable designer shirt. Impressive martial arts skills and sylish fashion.

Kim Hyun Joon did not lose his cool. It was chivalry and masculinity personified.

Wow. One must have heard some gasps from the audience. Mind you, even from the males. And, many foolish hearts must have been pounding.

The bully was thrown off balance. Bullies, violent or otherwise, were nothing but trouble.

The profiler’s kick sent the man sprawling to the ground. Kim Hyun Joon’s spinning kick was more exciting than the fuss the road bully had kicked up!

Now, who was that creepy-crawly crawling on the ground? Did the question gnaw at the viewers? Nope.

Nobody was interested. Poetic Justice. The bully got the thrashing he deserved.

Who bothered who the creep was when there was this oh, so masculine and handsome man, Kim Hyun Joon? Everyone must be wondering about the muscled leg that gave the spinning kick. In slow motion, the spinning kick was graceful and sexy - poetry in motion!

For those who are secretly fascinated, it’s time to write romantic odes to the many splendoured muscled leg!

And that was ‘Ho Yau Yeng!’. Well, the Cantonese have many expressions that are non-translatable.

‘Ho’ means ‘absolutely or ‘very’. ‘Yau Yeng’ means means ‘stylish’.

Some have translated it as ‘Stylishly Brave’ or ‘So Cool!’ or ‘Stylishly Masculine’.

And, Kim Hyun Joon was indeed Stylishly Masculine’. He had carried everything off with a panache that has earned praise from everyone. He had certainly set a masculine standard for men, one that commands respect and admiration.

It would not be surprising if Kim Hyun Joon has swept all the female viewers off their feet.

‘I’m arresting you for violence, damage to property, obstruction of justice and attempted murder.’

There was a smouldering look on Kim Hyun Joon's chiselled face as he dragged the man to his feet and herded him to the police who would then haul him off to the police station.

The road bully claimed that Nana Wang had recklessly cut in front of his car, and he was only trying to teach her a lesson!

Nana Wang, was by then safe, not in the arms of Kim Hyun Joon but those of her NCI sisters.

Basking in their love and concern, Nana Wang must have jolted out of her disorientation. Her whimpering had subsided. The violent shivers that shook her body had been replaced by a warm fuzzy feeling.

Relief must have welled up like sunshine, knowing that the handsome Kim Hyun Joon was her knight in shining armour!
