THE HORSES' MOUTHS
The insatiable curiosity of fans who have been fascinated by
the upcoming TVN drama, Flower of Evil, has
been partly satisfied by the release of the Script Reading video. The pumped up public and fans were given an
insider’s view of the important event so the precious information revealed about
the drama should be accurate. Speculation about the drama will spike further.
No fan can sit tight while waiting for the drama to begin in 1½ months’ time.
Director Kim Chul Kyu is enamoured of the script which he
thinks is thrilling, refreshing, completely unpredictable and original. ‘I think what makes this script most
attractive is its originality.’
When asked about the genre of the drama, he responded that he would
like to think that Flower of Evil
is ‘a melodrama in the guise of
suspense and mystery’.
To him, what is particularly interesting about Lee Joon Gi and
Moon Chae Won is that the two actors, in reality, are far removed from the
characters that they portray in the drama.
The fictional Baek Hee
Sung is emotionally restrained, meaning he is admirably self-controlled.
Director Kim Chul Kyu is especially emphatic that Lee Joon Gi, in reality, aside from being cheerful, extroverted, full of life and energy, also possesses a sense of humour.
Moon Chae Won is the opposite of Lee; she is calm, quiet and
introverted. But, in the drama, she has to portray a lively character who is full
of emotion and love.
From the viewpoint of a director, the stark contrast between
the real character and the reel character is intrinsically
interesting. Director Kim highlights this intriguing aspect to make the
viewers aware of it. He encourages them to be cognizant of that distinction while
watching the drama.
Baek Hee Sung and Ha Ji Won have been married for 14 years. Baek is probably his
own boss. He has a bright and sunny metalcraft workshop, probably a home
workshop.
Note the sign on the glass window.
It reads Metal Craft Workshop.
He is probably artistic; he creates and designs beautiful home
or office decor pieces and elegant jewellery. There are some creatively
designed decorative stuff, modern-style artwork and a mannequin with a
necklace in his studio, so he probably works with all kinds of metal
including copper, brass, stainless steel, bronze, gold, silver and pewter.
Baek’s workshop is well-equipped
with tools for his metalcraft work: wrenches, pliers,
scissors, shears, axes, knives, screws of different sizes, all sorts of hammers
and mallets, a wide array of saws and screwdrivers. And probably because
he has tools that can be used for killing, he is suspected of being a serial
killer. Is he a psychopath and serial killer?
Baek and Cha have a daughter, Baek Eun Ha.
The Baeks have a close and loving relationship. In one scene, Hee Sung literally spoon-feeds Ji Won. Probably, Ji Won is ill.
Is he manipulative and deceptive, or vulnerable and fearful when he says: ‘I only show her what she wants to see in me’. ‘…because we, Ji Won and I, are a match made in heaven’.
Ji Won is truly in love and takes all opportunities to express her love for him e.g. hugging him. In one instance, she coyly and sexily coos, ‘Honey, come over here. I need recharging.’ Ahh… so romantic! But, what does it mean?
But, the love of the Baeks is put to test. The sad and desperate couple frantically try to protect their love as the ugly truth about Baek Hee Sung unravels.
Meanwhile, the publicity machine has churned out an appalling question for the viewers of the video. What if your loving husband of 14 years is suspected of being a serial killer? Is the word ‘suspected’ a key to the mystery of the drama?
If Baek Hee Sung is suspected of being a serial killer, what would
be Cha Ji Won’s reaction? Disbelief, of course. After all, Baek is not the stereotypical man. Baek is a very loving husband and father,
and a hardworking provider for the family. Being a strong and determined homicide detective, she would not allow herself to be mired in self-pity but strive
hard heart, body and soul to prove the suspicions wrong. But, probably the truth
she ferrets out will be horrible and devastating. Would Baek be driven to desperation?
There are 3 types of depraved killers: spree killers, mass murderers and serial killers.
The spree killer
kills a number of victims at different locations in a short period of hours
or days.
Those around a mass
murderer think of him as weird or strange. The mass murderer kills many
people all at once. He is playing an endgame strategy. Once he commits himself
to his murderous plan, he does not expect to come out of it alive.
A serial killer
refers to a killer who has committed a number of murders. He hunts human
beings for the psychological or sexual thrill it gives and will do it over and over again,
never expecting to be caught. When a serial
killer is apprehended, everyone including neighbours and colleagues will
be shocked because he will be the last person they would have suspected of
committing such grisly murders. He seems so charming and gets on so well with
his wife or girlfriend.
Do Hae Soo’s father is a serial killer.
Hae Soo is the older sister of Baek Hee
Sung. Baek’s previous surname
is Do. Are serial killers born or made? If Baek Hee Sung is a serial killer, is he born or made? This is the mystery that will heat up the screen.
Is Director Kim Chul Kyu teasing the viewers by posing in a workshop which is different from Baek's? Does the gloomy workshop belong to an electrician or a mechanic? There are rubber tubings, ropes, hammers, saws, cutting pliers, wire fencing, a chain, a power drill, and others. They are enough to make the imagination go galloping at high speed.
Lee Joon Gi believes that while it might take time for viewers
to accustom themselves to a complex character like Baek Hee Sung, he is certain that they would gain considerable
pleasure in discovering and understanding the human being that he is. Baek is not exactly a white or a black
character.
Since portraying Baek Hee
Sung requires a lot of subtlety, Lee took time to study this character
carefully in order to produce a skilful and nuanced performance.
Although Lee Joon Gi is excited about working with Moon Chae Won
again, he had not expected their second collaboration to be a melodrama. However,
Lee is determined that their collaboration would be effective and successful
and he hopes to show the different sides of the melodrama.
It was obvious that there was a very real chemistry between Lee
Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won in the 2017 Criminal
Minds: Korea. The fans’ expectations are higher this time round. Kisses.
Hugs. Bed scenes.
Lee Joon Gi wonders how the story will be presented to the
audience. The fans are also curious.
Moon Chae Won is attracted to the drama because it is dramatic
and deals with profound subject matter. She is excited to work with Lee Joon
Gi again. Having read the script many times to understand it, she promises to do
her best ‘to stay true to the script as
much as possible.’
Cha Ji Won comes across as a romantic
and gullible person who is so easy to deceive. She thinks she knows and
understands her husband better than he knows and understands himself. She is disastrously
wrong; Baek Hee Sung is almost a
stranger in their house. She makes extensive investigations to hunt down the serial killer. But, surprise, surprise, she is the hunter and her husband is her prey.
Jang Hee Jin chose the project because of her faith in the
director and the appeal of Do Hae Soo, the daughter of a serial killer. Do’s
past, like a withered branch, is rotten so she decides to chop it off. Uprooting
herself, Do Hae Soo dismisses
everyone from her past life and walks away to start a new
chapter in her life. But, everyone has to face their demons and because of
some mysterious incident, Do Hae Soo
is forced to revisit the past.
Seo Hyun Woo plays Kim Moo Jin, a cunning journalist
without professional ethics who works for a weekly newspaper. A murder case
takes his fancy and he becomes fixated on it. He would stoop to using
underhand tactics to get results and he goes all out to scour unlikely places
to unearth secrets. The moment he meets Baek
Hee Sung, he knows he was on to something big. He may not be the lowlife
that we think he is; he might have a spark of humanity in him. His
investigations bring to light some important evidence that might prove
helpful to Baek.
Lee Joon Gi promises a really great drama for the viewers of Flower of Evil. Fans believe that it will be another masterpiece.
The TVN drama, which is sheduled to premiere on 22 July 2020 will air at 10.30 p.m. on every Wednesday and Thursday. The 16-episode drama is written by Yoo Jeong-hee, directed by Kim Cheol-kyu and produced by Studio Dragon and Monster Union.
