Intriguing Details of Flower of Evil Script Reading Revealed

INTRIGUING DETAILS

OF

FLOWER OF EVIL
SCRIPT READING

REVEALED

The script reading for TVN’s drama, Flower of Evil, was held quietly on 21 February 2020 but some of the interesting drama and casting details which had been cloaked in a shroud of mystery were only officially revealed on 18 May 2020.

The drama focuses on Baek Hee Sung, a psychopath who has assumed a false identity; his former self has become a distant past. Baek breezes easily through life for 14 years armed with the image of a happy family as a smokescreen. He and his homicide detective wife, Cha Ji Won have a cute and adorable pre-school daughter. Imagine Baek Hee Sung as a fawning sketch of a compliant househusband who lives under the radar of society. What would lure him out of his comfort zone?

What about the fifteenth year? He has to tread carefully; he walks on eggshells as Cha has been relentless in hunting down a serial killer, who, unbeknownst to her, is her very own husband. 14 years. So near and yet so far. She reaches the end of her investigations. Would the wacko be left off the hook? A showdown is imminent. Would she have to push Baek’s buttons for him to confess to his multitude of crimes?

I hope this will be a drama that remains in the minds of viewers for a long time.’ That’s the wish Lee Joon Gi made during the script reading for Flower of Evil.  If you long to encounter greatness in a drama, Lee Joon Gi is waiting for you in July 2020. Fans are confident that Lee, who plays Baek Hee Sung, a violent psychopath, a far cry from his usual hero roles, will deliver a heart-wrenching performance and Flower of Evil will be a masterpiece. What they fear though is that Baek Hee Sung’s life will an unbearably sad and poignant tragedy.

It is apparent that the titular role of a dangerous psychopath portrayed by a lead actor of Lee's standing has never been attempted before in a drama; it is something of a novelty. Imagine the evil psychopath living under the guise of an innocent 'Flower'. There are numerous dramas about serial killers, sociopaths and even psychopathic individuals but this will be a departure from the norm. Fans are confident that Lee Joon Gi will not disappoint. Is Baek Hee Sung evil personified? A serpent in the dark. Lee will sink his teeth into the role and turn Baek Hee Sung into a character of great complexity.

Expecting a multi-faceted performance from Lee Joon Gi, fans believe that his portrayal of Baek Hee Sung will be more than a searing examination of:

·      Baek’s excessive pride or hubris in escaping the police net for 14 years
·      The emotional savagery of a disturbed personality
·      The fake loving emotions of a marital partner and a father
·      The frightening air of calmness and detachment of a real psychopath
·      The emotional, psychological, mental and physical vulnerability of a human being

The popular and much-acclaimed actor, Moon Chae Won, who plays Cha Ji Won declares in the script reading session that she is ‘excited to be a part of such a great drama.’ She promises ‘to do her best’.  Moon Chae Won’s best, like Lee Joon Gi’s, means ‘Gold Standard’.

Jang Hee Jin, who plays Do Hae Soo, the daughter of a serial killer will prove to be pivotal in unveiling and solving the puzzle of Baek Hee Sung’s life. Do Hae Soo is Baek Hee Sung’s older sister, so Baek’s real surname is Do. Is the father or the mother a serial killer? Men are more violent than women and in history, there are more male than female psychopaths. So, probably the father is the psychopath. Ah… like father, like son.

Seo Hyun Woo plays Kim Moo Jin, a reporter. He is probably a curious, nosy-parker who likes to park his nose in forbidden territory to gather what he hopes would be exclusive news.

The rest of the cast includes Kim Ji Hoon, Choi Byung Mo, Son Jong Hak, Nam Gi Ae, Yoon Byung Hee, Im Chul Hyung, Choi Dae Hoon, Choi Young Joon, Kim Soo Oh, Jo Kyung Sook, Yang Hye Jin, Im Na Young, and child actress Jung Seo Yeon.

Nothing is definite, even at this stage. Casting is incomplete and the selection of actors would only be finalised in the later stages. Things can change at the very last minute. It doesn’t help that the data in Wikipedia and elsewhere is constantly being changed and updated.

It has been a thrilling guessing game for many people right from the beginning. Some fans can only hazard guesses at what truly excites them. Well, everything about the drama is exciting. But, it is just too soon to say, ‘Let the show begin’.

The drama, which is now slated to premiere on 22 July 2020 and end on 10 September 2020, will air at 10.30 p.m. on every Wednesday and Thursday. The 16-episode drama is written by Yoo Jeong-hee, directed by Kim Cheol-kyu and produced by Studio Dragon and Monster Union.

Viewers are advised to prepare a home oxygen concentrator before the July premiere. The gorgeous and handsome Lee Joon Gi is known to have a devastating effect on the audience. None is safe. Like they say, Lee Joon Gi is a ‘Weapon of Mass Seduction’ -  in your living room. A hot and sexy psychopath. And, the serial killer Baek Hee Sung will be a ‘Weapon of Mass Destruction’ in the drama. Forewarned is forearmed.
