Stunning Flower of Evil Posters Worth A Thousand Words

STUNNING

FLOWER OF EVIL

POSTERS

WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS

Curiosity has got the better of countless members of the public with the unveiling of two visually stunning posters for Flower of Evil, TVN’s upcoming Wednesday-Thursday drama. In fact, it has sent a surge of excitement and enthusiasm across the internet community. The handsome Lee Joon Gi and the beautiful Moon Chae Won have naturally and effortlessly slipped into character as they posed for two posters which are worth a thousand words.

The two contrasting posters by Kim Jaein, the creative director and his design team, tell completely different stories about Baek Hee Sung and Cha Ji Won. Their true emotions can be read from their facial expressions and body language.

The first captivating poster depicts a couple very much in love with each other. Baek Hee Sung, the reticent and detached metalcraft worker and his affable and loving homicide detective wife are framed against the blinding light of the morning sun that streams in through the open Venetian blinds.

There’s magic in the image. The light illuminates the loving and romantic scene with the couple looking deeply into each other’s eyes. Though they are partially silhouetted against the light, the love exuded by the engrossed husband-wife pair as they lean towards each other is unmistakable.

Their facial emotions and body language say it all. Hee Sung’s right palm closes on Ji Won’s shoulder as he draws her closer to him. Ji Won’s right palm rests gently on his chest while her left palm lightly touches his right hand. One can feel the gentleness and warmth in their posture and body gestures. The tender profile of their love has put the harsh morning light to shame. We cannot resist staring at them. Their love for each other is etched in our mind.

But wait. Perhaps, the dark colours and partial silhouettes convey the idea of love cloaked in deception. Baek Hee Sung is suspected of being a serial killer and his loving wife is oblivious of his murky past.

The second poster tells a contrasting story about Baek Hee Sung, a suspected serial killer, and Cha Ji Won, his suspicious homicide detective wife. It is a powerful and electrifying image dominated by warm red tones which convey dangerous moods and emotions. Red symbolises violence and bloodshed.

As opposed to the previous poster, the facial features of Baek Hee Sung and Cha Ji Won, the subjects of the dazzlingly bright poster, are clearly defined.

The poster depicts the besieged relationship of the pair who are on the opposite sides of the law. One is a suspected serial killer, the other, a determined and passionate homicide detective.

The tell-tale signs of the rift in their trust show that there is now a yawning gap between the couple which they cannot bridge.

Baek Hee Sung towers over Cha Ji Won and he is staring down at her. His face, ear, neck and shirt are streaked with blood. Dirt has collected around his neck and hand. The suspenseful image sends chills down one’s neck. Shudder. It is the image of a murderous killer.

The scales seem to have fallen from Cha Ji Won’s eyes. In her mind, her husband is clearly a murderer. The presence of blood on his body is enough to erode Cha Ji Won’s trust and confidence in him. The legitimate feelings of betrayal, distrust, doubt and fear are clearly painted on her face.  A questioning gaze flits over Cha Ji Won’s face as she tries to put him at arm’s length.

In contrast, Baek Hee Sung tries to bring her closer to him, expecting sympathy and empathy. Her clenched fist blocks his advance towards her while her other palm, which is planted firmly on his hand, restrains him further.

Baek’s face is full of unspoken reproach when she recoils from him. Is it resentment? Does his penetrating look make her squirm? The pain, hurt, fear and vulnerability that are mirrored in Baek Hee Sung eyes and his body language powerfully portray his mood. He is like a wounded deer. He wants her to hug him as she had always done in the past; he longs for her to believe and trust in him in his helpless moment. His face tautens when he senses the tension in her body and sees the distrust in her eyes. Her negative attitude evokes in him the fear and dread that he has lost her love and trust forever.

Baek Hee Sung’s countenance tugs at one’s heart strings.

Is he guilty of murder? ‘If Baek Hee Sung does not turn out to be a serial killer, will her suspicion and doubt hurt and haunt her?’ ‘If he does, will their love end on a bleak note and perhaps, be reduced to rubble?

Is the Flower of Evil poster design team leaving the images in the posters to the imagination and interpretation of the viewers?

Namooactors, Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won’s agency, expects the viewer’s heart to do a series of somersaults with their humorous line, ‘Our heart is fully occupied; Baek Hee Sung in the right atrium, Cha Ji Won in the right ventricle, Lee Joon Gi in the left atrium, Moon Chae Woon in the left ventricle.’ The public cannot do without Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won just as Baek Hee Sung and Cha Ji Won cannot do without each other.
