LEE JOON GI

The cast list for The Flower of Evil has grown a wee bit longer. Whoever releases the casting news is mercilessly teasing the fans and interested members of the public by leisurely doling out snippets of information. OSEN has revealed that Jang Hee Jin and Seo Hyun Woo are new members of the cast. Like Moon Chae Won, Jang Hee Jin will have a delightful reunion with Lee Joon Gi.

It is unnecessary to jog the memory of Lee’s fans; they are quite familiar with Jang Hee Jin who portrays Soo Hyang, the other woman in Kim Sung Yeol’s (Lee Joon Gi) life in the 2015 MBC romance-fantasy-saguek drama, The Scholar Who Walks The Night. Soo Hyang, the head of Hwayang-gak, is Kim Sung Yeol's long-suffering companion and loyal confidant who harbours an undying love for the 150-year old vampire, her saviour. But alas, her unconditional and undying love is unrequited.

Jang Hee Jin, who began her career as a model for the fashion magazines CeCi and Marie Claire, is a year younger than Lee Joon Gi. Known for her solid acting, Jang won the Excellent Actress Award (Weekend Drama) for You Are Too Much at the 2017 MBC Drama Awards. She will play Baek Hee Sung’s older sister in The Flower of Evil.

Seo Hyun Woo, who has gained a lot of media attention for his acting, has been cast as a man who is in love with Baek Hee Sung’s older sister. Seo is more active in movies than dramas. His dramas include The Lies Within (2019), My Mister (2018) and The Good Wife (2016). Seo studied English Literature in college and subsequently took Theatre at the Korea National University of Arts.

Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won will play husband and wife after portraying profilers working for the National Criminal Investigating (NCI) team in the 2017 TVN drama, Criminal Minds.

Moon Chae Won has received many awards for her acting performance. Her fine performance in The Princess’ Man  garnered her the Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series nomination for the 53rd Monte Carlo Television Festival (2013) in Monaco. Moon won the Producers' Choice Award for Love Forecast at the 19th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in 2015.

As for the gorgeous, athletic and multi-talented superstar, Lee Joon Gi represents a unique success story – a South Korean as well as an Asian phenomenon. Many veterans or superstars of different generations in the Asian showbusiness industry may be globally famous because of their specialised skills but few share the multi-faceted skills and the unique talents that are inherent in the multiple award winner, Lee Joon Gi. Actor. Martial Artist. Singer. Dancer. Model. And, the passionate and indefatigable superstar who holds millions of fans in the palm of his hand is known to do everything, even cameo roles, with all his heart, mind and soul.

In The Flower of Evil, Lee Joon Gi plays Baek Hee Sung, a psychopath. Despite treading a path that diverges from his usual legendary hero roles, Lee has the unwavering support of his fans who are more than thrilled by his unconventional choice. They know Lee is a brilliant actor who has the power to surprise in his performance.

In the drama, Cha Ji Won, a homicide detective, played by Moon Chae Won, is tasked with investigating and uncovering her husband’s (Baek) criminal past.  Cha, a loving and naïve wife, who most likely melts in her handsome husband’s sweet embrace, is oblivious of Baek’s complicated and murky history. In an effort to make a complete break with his past, Baek Hee Sung has probably stolen another person’s identity. Identity theft. Coming together as a couple is wonderful and blissful. Baek leads a deliriously happy and tranquil life with his wife and child. Perhaps, it is not difficult for a mentally unstable man to delude himself into believing that he is in love. Being a psychopath, he probably feeds on Cha’s vulnerabilities. Appearances can be deceptive. Baek’s whole life is a lie and an intentional deception.

The tide turns against Baek when Cha Ji Won discovers the truth about him. Her beautiful dream shatters and her worst nightmare begins. When their marriage comes apart, Cha Ji Won is completely flummoxed. The competent and gutsy homicide detective discovers to her horror that she has feet of clay. Duty calls and she is compelled to confront reality and arrest the man whom she loves deeply and irrevocably.

At this stage, the public is uncertain about the genre of The Flower of Evil but the director might mix genres to have maximum audience effect.

Director Kim Cheol Kyu, who heads The Flower of Evil production team, directed the 2018 TvN drama, ‘Mother’. Out of 130 contenders from around the globe, Mother was one of those chosen for the CANNESERIES Official Competition.  Alvin Lewi, a representative from the CANNESERIES of the Cannes International Series Festival, stated, “Only 10 series from nine countries were selected for the official competition category. I’m very pleased that ‘Mother’ was selected to represent Asia.”

Lee Joon Gi's legions of fans are confident that the TvN drama, The Flower of Evil, will capture the true soul of the unique and fascinating subject, psychopaths. A great many are curious about how the writer would examine the subject and also, how the director would broach the story. Scriptwriter Yoo Jung Hee is expected to weave a twisty melodrama that is worthy of Shakespeare and a psychological action thriller with shocking and terrifying revelations. The countdown to the most anticipated drama series of 2020 is now expected to be in the second half of 2020. 1st of July, perhaps?
