IN

THE FLOWER OF EVIL

It is uncertain how psychopathy will be interpreted and treated in The Flower of Evil, but fans are confident that the drama will change the way we perceive psychopaths. What is certain, however, is that Cha Ji Won, a homicide detective played by Moon Chae Won, will be irresistibly drawn like a magnet to Baek Hee Sung, a psychopath portrayed by Lee Joon Gi. To be exact - drawn like a moth to a flame. Disoriented, she might fly into the flame. It will be a fatal attraction if there is no room for genuine romantic love in Baek’s heart.

Why are people attracted to one another? In the past, scientists proclaimed that ‘Opposites Attract’. In recent years, researchers have made a U-turn and have come up with a startling new theory that ‘Opposites Do Not Attract’. The enlightened experts peddle the idea that opposites repel each other. It seems that people are drawn to those who possess similar character traits as them. Dinosaurs may take exception to the ‘new-fangled’ theory.

One shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss this interesting theory. Perhaps, such ideas are evident in the relationships between Kdrama / Kpop stars and their fans. One can say without hesitation that fans are in some ways similar to their Oppas; they are drawn to the stars who share their qualities. The characteristics that the fans admire or are inherent in their Oppa actually exist in them.

If Cha Ji Won gravitates towards Baek Hee Sung, she probably possesses some psychopathic traits as well. That makes Baek Hee Sung and Cha Ji Won birds of a feather. Like-minded people flock together.

Although one area of contention in psychopathy is about ‘nature’ or ‘nurture’, most scientists agree that psychopaths are born, not bred. Psychopaths are hardwired to be one. It’s all in the genes. Unlike psychopaths, sociopaths are made but both share some common characteristics.

There is heated argument about whether psychopaths have serious and permanent mental illness. And, who says all psychopaths are killers? People who have anti-social proclivities could be psychopathic. It has been reported that one (1) in one hundred (100) people is a psychopath. Surprise, surprise. It is reported that 4% of CEOs and business leaders are psychopaths.

The Hare Test for Psychopathy reveals the interesting traits of psychopaths.

Is Baek Hee Sung, a psychopath, truly insane? That’s the question for the screenwriter and director to answer.

What about Baek and Cha’s child? One suppresses a frown. Whether the young girl has inherited his genes is anybody’s guess. Another reeling thought is that Baek’s sister, played by Jang Hee Jin, might also have inherited similar genes. One can join the dots. It’s all in the family; psychopathy reigns supreme in the Baek family. Could something also be psychologically wrong with the man who is interested in Baek’s sister? In all seriousness, even if you consider all this logic to be faulty, it is still food for thought.

If Cha Ji Won unlocks the door that holds the secret to her husband’s turbulent criminal past, would her world be in tatters?

The Flower of Evil, which will capture the complexity of Baek Hee Sung’s psychopathy, is expected to be haunting and heart-breaking. It will offer unique perspectives into the workings of the psychopathic mind.

The fans, who have been frantically scavenging for news of the upcoming drama, hope and pray that the shooting of the drama will go swimmingly. As much as they have groused about the broadcast date of The Flower of Evil, they are grateful that the TvN drama is now slated to premiere in July 2020. The 16-episode Wednesday-Thursday drama is written by Yoo Jung Hee, directed by Kim Cheol Gyu, developed by Studio Dragon and produced by  Monster Union.
