The cinematic universe is officially on high alert. Filming has commenced for Dochabi, a high-octane Joseon historical-action-thriller slated for a simultaneous global premiere on Netflix. Directed by Ahn Tae-jin (The Night Owl) and written by Hwang Sung-goo, this blockbuster marks the long-awaited big-screen return of global icon Lee Joon Gi.
Joined
by a star-studded cast - Kim Do Hoon, Jeon Jong Seo, Lee Sang Yi, and Bae In Hyuk
- Dochabi (the ancient Korean word for ‘Goblin’) delivers a high-stakes
tale of power, deception, and martial prowess.
THE SETUP A BORDERLAND ON FIRE
Lee
Joon Gi takes the screen as Yi Do Gwan, the terrifyingly brilliant Supreme
Commander of the border region. Operating with absolute strategic dominance, Yi
secures total control by framing mountain farmers as northern invaders. Behind
the scenes, he dons the persona of Taemgwan, a masked warlord leading phantom
raiders to keep the Joseon court under his thumb.
Rising
against his rule are Taesan (Kim Do Hoon), a former officer-turned-mountain
warrior known as the Dochabi and his ally, Ahai (Jeon Jong Seo).
Meanwhile, royal investigator Park Se Ryeong (Lee Sang Yi) and Crown Prince
Yeolhwagun (Bae In Hyuk) attempt to untangle the mastermind's web.
THE FANS’ REQUESTS TO DIRECTOR AHN
Lee
Joon Gi taking on a primary antagonist is a historic cinematic event. His
global fandom, famed for their fierce, unwavering loyalty, has several requests
for Director Ahn Tae Jin.
A NAME FIT FOR A MASTERMIND
While
press reports label him Yi Do-gwan, fans embrace his formidable masked
title, Taemgwan. In Cantonese, Taemgwan (taam1 waan2) playfully
means ‘fond of fun’ -a cheeky nod to a tactical genius who views the court's
politics as a game he always wins.
MAGNETIC SWAGGER
Let
Taemgwan exude supreme confidence. Give us the breathtaking horseback glance - a
dangerous, flirtatious smile over the shoulder that instantly steals the show.
CHARMING THE FRONTIER
Let
the masked warlord show off his irresistible charm - a playful musical moment
or a song-and-dance moment or witty banter that wins over Ahai, showing that
the ‘villain’ is far more captivating than the hero.
THE MASTERCLASS REVEAL
When the mask comes off, it shouldn't be out of defeat - it should be a power move.
Removing
the mask reveals Lee Joon Gi’s legendary micro-expressions: pure, unshakeable
arrogance as he proves he has been ten steps ahead of the Joseon court the
entire time.
A PLAYFUL NOTE OF ADMIRATION FOR DIRECTOR AHN TAE JIN & TEAM DOCHABI
We
are absolutely buzzing with excitement for Dochabi! The thought of Lee
Joon Gi stepping into the dark, magnetic boots of Supreme Commander Yi Do Gwan
is keeping us up at night in the best way possible. Now,
as devoted global fans, we have a tiny confession: we are already entirely too
attached to the bad guy! Remember
watching Troy and feeling utterly heartbroken when Eric Bana’s
incredible Hector fell to Achilles? That is our one silly fear! Lee Joon Gi has
a dangerous habit of making us root for his characters no matter how ruthless
they are, so seeing him suffer a tragic end would tear our hearts to pieces.
Of course, we trust your vision completely and leave every narrative decision in your expert hands. Directors know best, and we cannot wait to see how you bring this epic world to life! But if there happens to be a small corner of the script where our magnetic Supreme Commander, the playful Taemgwan (taam1 waan2) - gets to outwit his rivals and ride off unbroken into the sunset... well, we certainly wouldn't complain! No matter which path you choose for him, we trust your direction
completely and will be cheering Dochabi on worldwide from day one on
Netflix!
