Netflix
has officially greenlit Dochabi,
a gritty, ground-level Joseon-era historical action film that strips away
fantasy to deliver raw, visceral realism. Forget magical beasts and whimsical
lore, Dochabi grounds its title in a terrifying reality. Helmed by
director Ahn Tae Jin (The
Night Owl) and penned by screenwriter Hwang Sung Goo, this high-stakes thriller is produced by Onda
Works.
LEE JOON GI AS YI DO GWAN THE ULTIMATE ANTAGONIST
At the dark heart and soul of Dochabi stands the legendary multiple international awards-winner, Lee Joon Gi (The King and The Clown, Time Between Dog and Wolf, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Criminal Minds, Lawless Lawyer, Flower of Evil, Again My Life, The Sword of Aramun). Universally acclaimed for his peerless martial arts prowess, razor-sharp dramatic intensity, and undeniable screen presence, Lee steps into his most dangerous role yet as Yi Do Gwan - the Supreme Commander of the northern borderlands. With his unmistakable charisma, breathtaking action, and commanding
performance, Lee Joon Gi foreshadows the emergence of yet another iconic
character destined to be unforgettable.
YI DO GWAN
THE TYRANT COMMANDER AND SEDUCTIVE MASKED LEADER
Yi Do
Gwan is not merely an adversary; he is a maestro of destruction. Driven by an
unquenchable, calculated thirst for absolute power, Commander Yi operates as a
ruthless strategist upfront and a menacing shadow-master behind the scenes.
THE CONSPIRACY
To
justify relentless militarization and consolidate his hold over the frontier,
Yi secretly commands an elite cabal of masked killers to slaughter defenseless hwajeonmin
(displaced slash-and-burn mountain peasants).
THE FRAME-JOB
He
brutally massacres these off-the-grid settlers, callously labeling the
atrocities as ‘barbarian raids’ by foreign Jurchen tribes.
THE TYRANT'S MAGNETISM
Magnetically charismatic yet deeply sinister, Lee Joon Gi is set to deliver an iconic, chilling performance as an oppressor who hides blood-soaked ambition beneath the regal authority of a Joseon commander.
Surrounded
by shadows, commanding through fear - Lee Joon Gi's Yi Do Gwan promises to be
one of the most mesmerizingly ruthless villains in historical cinema history.
TAE SAN THE GHOSTLY REBEL
Tae San, the ghostly rebel opposing
the Supreme Commander is played by Kim
Do Hoon (27). A disgraced former military officer
living in self-imposed exile among the rugged peaks, Tae San finds himself
framed by Yi Do Gwan as the ringleader of the ‘barbarian invaders’. Forced out of hiding to protect innocent mountain settlers, Tae San adapts deadly guerrilla warfare tactics. Striking from the dense forest shadows and vanishing without a trace, he fights like a monster and moves like a phantom.
The
desperate peasants bestow upon him a fearful, reverent name: Dochabi - a ghost-like spirit of wild
lore born to punish the corrupt.
AHAI THE LETHAL WARRIOR
Joining
Tae San in defiance of Yi Do Gwan’s reign of terror is Ahai, played by Jeon Jong Seo. A
Jurchen woman possessing lightning-fast reflexes and lethal martial prowess,
Ahai fights shoulder-to-shoulder with Tae San to tear down the Commander's
deception.
THE INVESTIGATION AND THE ROYAL COURT
PARK SE RYEONG
Park Se Ryeong, the
sharp-witted royal inspector dispatched to the frozen border, is played by Lee Sang Yi (34). Suspicious of the convenient ‘barbarian
attacks’, Inspector Park begins tracking Commander Yi Do Gwan's movements,
igniting a dangerous cat-and-mouse game within the military ranks.
CROWN PRINCE YEOLHWAGUN
Crown Prince Yeolhwagun, a fictional royal figure of deep compassion played by Bae In Hyuk (28), is moved by the horrific suffering of his forgotten subjects.
The
Crown Prince secretly intervenes to uncover the treasonous puppet-master behind
the borderland massacres.
THE HISTORICAL BACKDROP
The Manchus are descended from the Jurchen people who earlier established the Jin Dynasty (1115 – 1234) in China A JURCHEN EMPEROR
Set
against the harsh fringe of the Joseon frontier along the Yalu and Tumen
rivers, Dochabi spotlights the tragic reality of the hwajeonmin -
displaced peasants forced into mountain slash-and-burn farming by systemic
famine, exorbitant aristocratic taxation, and land grabs.
Denied
legal protection and viewed with suspicion by the Joseon court, these
vulnerable communities become the perfect, tragic pawns in Yi Do Gwan's bloody
ascension to power.
