Lately, Indonesian fans seem to be target of questions concerning Lee Joon Gi. They have been bombarded with many interesting questions, the latest, of which is, ‘What is your Favourite Scene / the Best Scene / the Most Memorable Scene in Lee Joon Gi’s television series?’ Even though their answer is confined to 4 television series: Flower of Evil, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, Lawless Lawyer and Two Weeks, it is still a very tricky question.
My two cents’ worth. Flower of Evil, the 2020 tvN masterpiece, has been a hot topic in 2024 because of K-Drama Fes with Studio Dragon in Japan, so we should leave it out. And, not many people have seen the underrated 2013 MBC Two Weeks, a very thrilling and meaningful television series, so we will also have to leave it out. That leaves the other 2 masterpieces, SBS’ 2016 Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo and tvN’s 2018 Lawless Lawyer.
Well, if we are talking about the Indonesian audience, I would have to say, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo. It is not because Lawless Lawyer is a less worthy contender but because a special scene in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo reminds one of a popular Indonesian song.
There are many scenes in Moon
Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo that are memorable.
EPISODE 2 Wang So tries to hide his facial
scar when Hae Soo suddenly appears in the royal bathing pool during the Narye bathing
ritual. The look of vulnerability, coupled with embarrassment and fear, makes
Lee Joon Gi’s performance outstanding.
EPISODE 3 The action scene in the
temple where Wang So fought with the monks is spectacular. The scene shows the
Fourth Prince framed against two parallel roofs of the temple when he dramatically
leaps up to slash at the monks.
EPISODE 8 Wang So is chosen to be The
Rainmaker as Goryeo has been suffering from a prolonged drought. Though it seems
like a random pick in a lucky dip, Wang So, the Fourth Prince, has actually
been singled out by King Taejo to lead the rainmaking ceremony. When the Fourth Prince ascends the stairs leading to the ceremonial platform, he turns around and triumphantly faces the palace dignitaries. Hae Soo is shocked to get a surreal glimpse of the face of the future tyrannical Emperor Gwangjong. EPISODE 10
The exciting scene in Episode
10 is the inadvertent poisoning of Wang So by Hae Soo.
Hae Soo is caught in the web
of an assassination plot against Wang Mu, the crown prince. Queen Yoo plans to
murder him with poisoned tea. Wang So knows of the plot and studies the face of
the unsuspecting Hae Soo when she delivers the poisoned tea to the First Prince.
Wang So intercepts Hae Soo and drinks the poisoned tea instead.
EPISODE 11
The famous scene in Episode
11 shows Wang So protecting Hae Soo from the onslaught of the heavy rain as she
stubbornly kneels in the front of the palace. Although she might have to face the
backlash for her protest or her plea to Taejo not to impose the death sentence
on the innocent Court Lady Oh, the young lady courageously stands her ground
until she faints.
EPISODE 20 And the poignant scene in
Episode 20 shows Emperor Gwangjong, a lonely and forlorn figure as he faces his
approaching death. Hae Soo is long dead. He, probably burdened by his regrets, seems
to be reminiscing about Hae Soo, the love of his life, and his exciting,
illustrious achievements. When you first watched The
Poisoned Tea scene in Episode 10, an Indonesian song, ‘Madu dan Racun’
might have whirled in your mind.
‘Madu dan Racun’ is a very popular song in many
countries in the Malay world. |
