The Lunar New Year is just around the corner and Sense China has
geared up to make a splash in the publication world with their stunning special Lunar New Year
2021 magazine cover. One is amazed by Sense’s ingenious way of illustrating
the meteoric
rise of Lee Joon Gi, their first cover star, to global stardom. It is a fitting tribute to the superstar’s tenacity,
determination, perseverance, passion, courage, strength and success in
showbusiness, which is in itself, a testament to survival in an evanescent
profession. The cover image certainly paints a thousand words about the
global multihyphenate superstar who is an actor-martial artist-singer-dancer-model. If Sense is the first
magazine in the publication world to give a unique cultural twist to their
cover design, a ‘work of art’, that is peppered with Chinese cultural
symbolisms, then Lee Joon Gi is the first actor to give it spirit, character,
sensuality and intelligence. Lee has brought his individuality, intellect and
subtle sexuality to the magazine world. Sense China’s cover, a spread
of vermillion and crimson, the colour of the Lunar New Year, has actually 3
colours: red, white and black – Lee Joon Gi’s favourite colours. The meanings
of the colours are rooted in ancient cultural history. Red, the colour of
celebration, is auspicious; it is the luckiest colour which brings good fortune,
beauty, vitality, success, happiness and keeps away evil. Generally, red speaks of love, passion, intensity, energy, excitement, sexiness, strength, confidence, power, motivation and courage. But crimson specifically symbolises a person of sensuality, high social standing with a strong determination to succeed. In the cover image, Lee
Joon Ji’s arched body expresses the flexibility and fluidity of an athlete
and the gracefulness and sensuality of a dancer. The gold carp, personified as the superstar, swims, swirls and spirals upward and metamorphoses into a dragon. The Taiji symbol, the ancient swirling symbol of Taoism, uses black and white to represent the unity of Yin and Yang. Ancient Chinese revered black, the colour of heaven, and regarded it as the king of colours. It represents knowledge, stability and power. White epitomises purity, righteousness, confidence and strength. The Taiji spiral ends in the
figure three which points upwards. The number three (3) which spoken in a
certain tone and with an inflexion, sounds like ‘rise’ in Mandarin Chinese. https://twitter.com/shadowscapes/status/1037746966476869632/photo/1 According
to Chinese mythology, many carps swim upstream against the river’s strong
current to reach the Dragon Gate which is located at the top of a waterfall
cascading from a legendary mountain. Few are capable or brave enough for
the final leap over the waterfall. If a carp successfully makes the
jump, it is transformed into a powerful dragon. The image
of a carp jumping over Dragon’s Gate is an old and enduring Chinese cultural
symbol for courage, perseverance, and accomplishment. A carp symbolises
wealth and success. The
pronunciation of fish in Chinese, ‘yú’ is a homophone for ‘affluence’ or
‘abundance’. This phonetic similarity has led to the fish becoming a symbol
of abundance and prosperity in Chinese culture. A dragon
symbolises power, strength and fortitude. A
Chinese dragon’s large, conspicuous scales indicate its origin from a
carp. The Chinese dragon has long been an auspicious symbol of great
and benevolent magical power. Historically,
the dragon was the exclusive symbol of the emperor of China. Like the carp, Lee Joon Gi, has to struggle against the currents of difficulties, prejudice, unfairness and discrimination after his stupendous launch into fame, popularity and fortune with his box office hit movie, The King and The Clown in 2005 . After
winning many awards, Lee promised his fans at a fan concert in 2006 that he
would work very hard to be an actor who is worthy of their love, devotion and
respect. Lee Joon

True to
his word, he has worked passionately and diligently before his military enlistment and after his discharge from the army to achieve what he is today. Having
performed remarkably in many unforgettable movies and dramas, he won many
accolades and international awards. Lee has also performed in innumerable sold-out concerts across Asia. Lee Joon Gi has captured global
attention with his tour de force performance as Do Hyun Soo, the son of a
psychopath in his 2020 drama, Flower of Evil, a suspense-melodrama masterpiece.
The stunning piece of work captures the gnawing combination of rage, anxiety,
stoicism and fear of a man who has been stripped of his identity through no
fault of his own. The drama’s frank treatment of individuals with mental health
problems, with its emphasis on symbol and metaphor, has broken new ground; it is
the best drama of all time. Unsurprisingly, Cultura, a well-respected South Korean magazine for the arts and culture, has proclaimed Lee Joon Gi The 2020 ICON (DRAMA).
