THE FLOWER OF EVIL

Believe it or not, Lee Joon Gi will play a Villain Protagonist for the first time in his acting life. The gorgeous, sexy and multi-talented superstar will transform himself into a malevolent psychopath, Baek Hee Sung, in TVN’s new psychological-action thriller, ‘The Flower of Evil’. The actor normally plays modern or historical heroes in different drama genres. But wait a minute, is it too early to speculate whether Baek Hee Sung is really a villain? Hmm.

Fans are excited about his collaboration with the beautiful and delectable Moon Chae Won who would also show the viewers another side of herself.

The interesting tale pits Baek Hee Sung (Lee Joon Gi), a psychopathic killer, against his wife, Cha Ji Won (Moon Chae Won), a homicide and violent crimes detective. Baek Hee Sung’s attempts at switching identities and putting his life of crime behind him fails. Baek’s dark and murky past begins to unravel when Cha Ji Won, a bird of prey’, urgently hunts him down. He would be forced to face the demons of his past. But, would his own loving and loyal wife be his judge, jury and executioner?

The Flower of Evil. The FOE. There are many flowers which are deadly or poisonous. Fleurs du Mal. Flowers of evil. In certain cultures, flowers are equated with women. Is it possible that Cha Ji Won, the beautiful detective, is the villain?

Deadly flowers: (l to r) foxglove, poppy, angel’s trumpet

It would be interesting to watch Lee Joon Gi play Baek Hee Sung who seems like a normal devoted family man with a beautiful wife and a lovely daughter. Is it a portrait of a perfect marriage, one between a contented househusband and a gritty crime fighter? Baek, a metal craftsman, probably works at home and takes care of their daughter while Cha, his detective wife, is granted the leeway to pursue twisted criminals.

It is expected that the drama would switch back and forth dramatically between the blissful marriage and the exhaustive search for the dangerous psychopath, whose identity is shrouded in mystery.

Lee is reported to have been enamoured with the drama script as soon as he read it. There is no disguising the fact that he was in buoyantly good spirits when he proclaimed, ‘… I will commit myself to the project and have fun.’ The name, Baek Hee Sung, already sounds fun and enigmatic. An unforgettable name.

Lee Joon Gi’s portrayal of the psychopath is expected to be subtly nuanced and richly textured but the viewer’s experience would probably be too terrifying to contemplate.

Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won previously collaborated for the police procedural-crime-action drama, Criminal Minds. It must have been a great disappointment to the viewers that the profilers did not have a romantic relationship. In this new collaboration, it is hoped that the two thespians, who play a married couple, will have romantic scenes. If there are passionate kissing scenes, the audience would certainly let out a collective yelp or gasp every now and then!

Lee had shied away from the small screen since he last played Bong Sang Pil in TVN’s 2018 Lawless Lawyer, which critics describe as a ‘once in a lifetime’ role. A two-year lapse is a long time. Fans have been impatiently waiting for another ‘once in a lifetime’ role in a new masterpiece. One can be certain that they will not be disappointed. Lee Joon Gi constantly surprises with a fresh creation in every role he plays. Whatever the tale is, viewers can expect to suffer a shell shock and be surprised by an electrifying ending.

The TVN drama is written by Yoo Jung Hee, directed by Kim Cheol Gyu, and produced by Studio Dragon and MonsterUnion.

The Flower of Evil is due to air on Wednesdays and Thursdays in June.
