It was a very cold wintry day when Lee Joon Gi, South Korea’s most bankable superstar, embarked on his trip to Macau for The Star Magazine photoshoot on 7 January 2020. The sub-zero weather made the Incheon International Airport in Seoul look white and bleak. Never mind the cold. The handsome superstar, who braved the freezing weather, looked gorgeous and trendy. Lee opted for a navy-blue and grey cashmere cardigan which he had layered over a white t-shirt and teamed with a pair of beige trousers. A navy-blue bucket hat completed the ensemble. They are all the fashionable colours of winter except for the naughty little bit of red peeping out of the slit pockets of his cardigan. Suddenly, the airport brightened up.

Upon arrival at the Macau International Airport, Lee discovered that the weather was warm and sunny. Strange. Was it not winter? Perhaps, it is not a gross exaggeration to say that he brought out the sun and heated up the temperatures in Macau. While his South Korean fans were stewing in the bitter winter, his Chinese fans were busy merrymaking in Macau.

The superstar was swarmed by his ardent fans, who gave him an effusive welcome. It was auspicious that the airport poster even ‘encouraged him to take his brand to new heights in Asia’. It would certainly be dizzy new heights for the superstar. Asia’s top multihyphenate was soon comfortably ensconced in one of the suites in Forbes 5-star Mandarin Oriental in Macau.

Lee Joon Gi’s trip to Macau must have revealed many hidden gems, places of history and interest. It was an opportunity for him to enhance his and his global fans’ knowledge of Macau. His non-Macau fans were given an inkling of where he went for his photoshoot. Many of his fans would derive vicarious pleasure from reading or watching videos about his trip. His photoshoot would certainly showcase the niftiest pieces of history and the interesting vestiges of Portuguese colonial rule.

Observers are left in no doubt that Lee Joon Gi had very exciting encounters with his fans who proved to be very passionate and enthusiastic in their welcome. He was inundated with many wonderful and generous gifts; bouquets of beautiful flowers; letters with mysterious contents, and famous delicacies. And unsurprisingly, many fans were loud in their proclamations of their love for him.

Every day during his five-day trip in Macau, Lee was besieged by his fans. The fan videos and photos of the actor provide a snapshot of the life and the allure of the charismatic superstar.

All of Lee Joon Gi’s photoshoot trips are like travel stories which speak volumes about the South Korean actor. He is not only South Korea’s foremost Tourism Ambassador but also a goodwill ambassador who shares interesting facts about local tourist attractions as well as those of every fascinating nook and cranny that he has visited.

I should perhaps pause here for a minute and point out that Lee had an amazing encounter with a courageous fan who gave him a letter at the Macau International Airport on his return trip to South Korea. It was 11 January 2020.

Look at Lee Joon Gi’s expression. It is priceless.

Lee would not have expected the vast assembled crowd on his return trip. The arrival hall at the Incheon International Airport was truly an amazing sight. The huge turnout by local male and female fans alike signified an overwhelming outpouring of love for Lee Joon Gi. It showed that Lee had not only captured more hearts and minds abroad but also local ones. As usual, he was showered with gifts of every kind. Ah, did the ladies also hand him chin-dropping love notes?
