Who would have thought that the Asian sensation, Lee Joon Gi, would return for a second time to Thailand to do a photo shoot for his new photo book? His legions of Thai fans were ecstatic – over the Moon, of course! Those fans had mooned over him for years and suddenly they found themselves invading and flooding the Chiang Rai International Airport and Suvarnabhumi Airport to see him.

It is unsurprising that Lee Joon Gi’s invigorating appearance in Thailand had created stirs of excitement. He is a huge star especially in Asia. It is a known fact that Lee Joon Gi’s Asian fans display the most explosive and passionate enthusiasm. His Thai fans are also deemed friendly, warmth, generous and loving. Interestingly, even fans from other countries - Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia had flown to Chiang Rai and Bangkok to support him.

Sawasdee Khrab

It has been a long time since the gorgeous, sexy and athletic superstar held his first photo shoot in Thailand. The world launch of Lee’s first Thai photo book, ‘Sawasdee Khrab’ or ‘Hello’ was held on 27 September 2009.  About a hundred members of the Asian media were present and 1,000 fans were waiting to see him.

The book was published in conjunction with the Korean-Thai Chamber of Commerce (KTCC) fiftieth anniversary celebrations. In appreciation for his service as an Honorary Spokesperson for raising Thailand’s profile, Lee received a special plaque from the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The promotion of the photo book was also carried out in China, Japan and South Korea. Lee was even invited to attend the birthday event of the Thai king. It is exactly 9 years since then.

Lee’s Thai fans had cried for the Moon every year; they wanted the super Star to return. That was many moons ago. They don’t have to moon around anymore. Wang So (Emperor Gwangjong), the ‘Moon and Sun’ had finally appeared on their doorstep and they couldn’t stop raving about him.

Lee Joon Gi is the first Hallyu star to have launched his own official fan club in Thailand. The popularity of the Asian superstar in Thailand probably started when he starred in the movie, The King and The Clown. It was boosted by his MBC drama Time Between Dog and Wolf which was shot partly in Thailand in 2007. About six (6) out of the 16 episodes are related to Thailand. The many exciting action scenes include a Muay Thai boxing match. The shooting at many interesting locations in Thailand took about a month.

When Korea's top designer, the late Andre Kim, launched his fashion debut 'Andre Kim Fashion Art Fantasia' in Bangkok on 7 March 2009, Lee Joon Gi was the main model. The event  was held to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of Korea-Thailand diplomatic relations. Her Royal Highness Princess Som Sawalee and some 1,000 guests were present.

Lee Joon Gi’s exploding popularity in Asia has never waned but global recognition of his work has been given a push upwards recently. He rides a triumphant wave with Moon Lovers-Scarlet Heart: Ryeo (2016), Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2017), Criminal Minds Korea (2017) and Lawless Lawyer (2018).

Many of his fans have grown up with him but now there is a new generation of younger fans. His raging fanbase which had been predominantly female now includes young men and even older men.

Lee Joon Gi’s beautiful and eye-catching images in his previous photo books were shot in different locations; his more recent ones include Hawaii, USA (2016) and Okinawa, Japan (2017). Lee Joon Gi’s photo books are great pieces of art and are a must-have on the bookshelves of fans.

LEE JOON GI
FROM
HIS THAI FANS

Now, that’s what we call overwhelming love and generosity!

Lee Joon Gi needs a warehouse to store all the wonderful gifts that his fans have given him over the years. He could turn it into a museum one day.

What about future gifts? One can foresee a flood of such gifts. Labeling and categorizing the gifts would take time.
