What does the Resident Evil: The Final Chapter teaser trailer tell us about the Korean superstar,   Lee Joon Gi?

Everything. Handsome, Sexy, Multi-talented, Strong and Excitingly Evil. Oops, the last one does not describe the actor himself but his character in the movie.

9th August saw the release of the teaser trailer for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, a Hollywood movie franchise in which Lee Joon Gi stars as Commander Lee. The movie marks Lee’s debut in Hollywood.

Incidentally, Lee's Chinese movie, Never Said Goodbye, opened in cinemas in China on the same day. Both directors, Lin Yu-Hsien and Paul W. S. Anderson, are ingenious to have chosen an auspicious date, that is Qixi or Chinese Valentine’s Day, to launch their movie or teaser trailer as they know that the Chinese would be in a holiday mood.

So, are Lee Joon Gi’s fans prepared for the enormous wave of emotion that would engulf them when they watch the teaser trailer of Resident Evil: The Last Chapter?

Described as ‘a national treasure’ by an *American fan, Lee is famous and popular particularly in East Asia but this is about to change with the release of his Hollywood movie. He may be a mystery in some parts of the world but soon he would create earth-shattering history. There will certainly be unprecedented media interest in Lee Joon Gi once the movie is released worldwide. His role may be a cameo one but the successful franchise has a large following. He looks certain to conquer the world.

Lee Joon Gi plays Gong-gil, the effeminate clown, in his blockbuster movie

Lee Joon Gi’s first Korean movie, The King and The Clown, a blockbuster movie, catapulted him from being an unknown actor into the limelight to be a national celebrity and a household name in Korea in 2005. His titular clown role got him his first acting award. It was Lee’s lucky year as he won 10 awards for his different skills.

Lee Joon Gi knew his life had changed forever when hordes of screaming young girls and frantic women flocked in droves to see him at public events. Lee is the best thing that has ever come out of Korea, someone with multiple talents, good looks, a sexy aura and a unique charm of his own. And, dare we predict, entertainment industry longevity.

Lee Joon Gi: The sexy, handsome and  multi-talented actor

Being talented, ambitious, diligent and highly motivated, Lee Joon Gi has continued to harvest awards for his acting talents and in other areas of his life. Lee, besides being an amazing actor, is also a talented singer and dancer. He is reputed to be an even better dancer than most singer idols. It is not surprising that while he was in military service from 2010 to 2012, he even received a number of awards, including those for marksmanship and athleticism.

His impressive and extensive acting portfolio includes the Japanese movie, Virgin Snow, and Korean dramas like Arang and the Magistrate and The Joseon Gunman for which he took home The Outstanding Korean Actor Award at the Seoul International Drama Awards in 2013 and 2015 respectively. His other unforgettable dramas and movies include My Girl, and others which raked in many awards - Hero, Time Between Dog and Wolf, Iljimae, Two Weeks, The Scholar Who Walks The Night, and Fly, Daddy, Fly.

LEE JOON GI’S POPULARITY
RAMPS UP

Lee Joon Gi’s pair of gorgeous eyes is
deemed ‘a national treasure’ by his enthusiastic fans

In 2015, Namoo Actors, Lee Joon Gi’s agency, had divulged that the movie director, Paul W. S. Anderson, emailed them and expressed his positive opinion of Lee’s action dramas and influence in Asia.

Having a large following in Asia, particularly China, Japan and Korea, Lee is recently reported by tvN to be the number 2 most popular Korean male actor in China.

His upcoming Korean historical-fantasy-romance drama, Moon Lovers-Scarlet Heart: Ryeo is also expected to push his popularity to an even higher level. The highly anticipated drama, which has heavy American investment would be broadcast at the same time in Korea, China, Singapore and Malaysia and other South-east Asian countries. It would debut in Japan a week later.

Lee’s fans would not be surprised if his popularity and fame skyrockets and surpasses everyone else’s in Korea after the worldwide screening of his Chinese and Hollywood movies.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
FOR
THE HOLLYWOOD ACTION MOVIE

There are many handsome, popular and talented stars in Korea but Lee was the front-runner to play Commander Lee in the science-fiction action-horror movie, Resident Evil: The Last Chapter. However, he was not tapped to play Commander Lee based on his star status alone. Lee has a great track record in diverse drama genres and most importantly, he has black belts in Taekwondo (3rd degree), Hapkido (1st degree) and Taekyeon (1st degree).

Reports stated that the director, Paul W.S. Anderson, chose Lee after studying and analysing Lee’s acting skills in his dramas especially ‘The Joseon Gunman’ and ‘The Scholar Who Walks The Night’. He must have been very impressed.

In an interview with *Allure magazine March 2016 issue, with whom he did a fashion shoot, Lee Joon Gi shared the reasons why he was chosen.

Paul W.S. Anderson

Lee Joon Gi recounts, ‘Director Paul W.S. Anderson, who didn’t speak Korean, muted footage of me acting and analysed my expressions and emotions before deciding to hire me. He didn’t just pick me because of my reputation as a Hallyu actor. That moved me.’

If you are on a mission to unravel the hype over his acting talents and skills, then you are in luck. Watch some of the video clips of Lee Joon Gi’s dramas below. You will be properly impressed and you will never ever doubt him again. These are only a few highlights.

LEE’S SILENCE OVER HIS FILMING IN SOUTH AFRICA

Lee Joon Gi had maintained a deliberate silence over his Hollywood movie shooting stint in Cape Town, South Africa. None of Lee’s fans nor the media knew about it until Milla Jovovich, the lead actress and wife of Paul Anderson, uploaded an epic wefie of them together on instagram.

Lee Joon Gi plays the evil Commander Lee of the Umbrella Corporation who would stop at nothing to help launch the T-virus that would change humans into the undead and mutant monsters. Humans will be on the edge of extinction. The Hollywood movie which is filmed in 3D is the sixth in the franchise. This is Lee’s first dark role in a movie.

The actor confessed that the beautiful and talented actress, Milla Jovovich, has been an inspiration to him, especially pertaining to her stunts. She had been receptive to his suggestions and they had synchronised their stunt scenes in order to produce a powerful visual impact. Lee Joon Gi is famous for his flexible body, athleticism, his ‘tornado kicks’ and other martial arts skills.

The admiration is mutual. Milla Jovovich has been generous in her praises of her Korean co-star. She did not run out of superlatives to describe him. In her own words, Lee Joon Gi is an incredible 3rd Dan Taekwondo master and actor’, ‘insanely fun’, ‘so inspiring’ and ‘Makes me want to....brush up on my martial arts skills  (refer to her post above)

Milla Jovovich is spot on. Watch the following clips to see why she and his fans are so inspired.

However, Lee’s legions of fans have high hopes that he would stamp his presence on his vast audience and make a permanent global impact, and they are all cheering him on.
