Lee Joon Gi 20th Debut Anniversary in Showbusiness: The Actor A Pictorial Parade

 LEE JOON GI

20th DEBUT

ANNIVERSARY

IN
SHOWBUSINESS

THE ACTOR

A PICTORIAL PARADE

2021 is the 20th anniversary of Lee Joon Gi’s debut in the show business industry. Showbusiness has long been narrowly defined as film, television, theatre and music. Today, it includes all aspects of the entertainment industry – broadcasting, streaming media, radio, fashion, advertising, book publishing, video games and so on and so forth.

Lee has been actively involved in many aspects of showbusiness particularly in film, television, music, fashion, book publishing and advertisements since his debut. He also does radio projects, media streaming and has been involved in one video game advertisement. He got his start as a print model in 2001. Though his first acting job was only in 2003, being an actor is still the most important part of his career.

The celebrities involved in the film were persecuted. According to Hankyoreh, ‘The NIS not only arranged tax audits of the entertainment companies to which these celebrities belonged but also engineered the reassignment of broadcasting staff who produced programs that featured them, blocked them from becoming candidates for the chairs of international film festival committees and even meddled in the selection of the winners of the broadcasting awards by asking for these figures to be dropped from the competition.’

It was reported that more than 500 of Lee’s fans bid him farewell when Lee enlisted into the military on 3 May 2010. It was the first time in military history that so many fans came to support a superstar.

Lee Joon Gi, a member of the cast of the military musical, 'Voyage of Life', salutes (above) at a press conference on 2 August 2010 for the show to be held at Dongsoong Art Hall in Seoul, South Korea.

The actor suffered head injuries in an accident during the rehearsal on the opening day. It was reported that he needed 51 stitches to close the wound.

SOUTH KOREA

13.01.2017   INTERVIEW

MILLA JOVOVICH

I was absolutely shocked at how talented he is because people always come up to me and say, ‘Oh, you’re so good in these action movies, and you do your own stunts. It’s so amazing.’ And so, I always kind of thought, ‘Oh ya, I’m kind of cool.’

But then, I met Joon Gi (embarrassed laugh) and I realised what cool really is!

MILLA JOVOVICH

You know, for me, it was so inspiring to work with Joon Gi because really, he does everything himself - beating me up, punching me, kicking me, throwing me into things but you know, as soon as they say ‘Cut!’, we were laughing and having so much fun and (turns to Joon Gi) ‘I learned so much from you, and it was so wonderful to watch.’

INTERVIEW IN TAIWAN

PAUL ANDERSON

Joon Gi was amazing. Amazing. The scenes between him and Milla are electrifying. You’ve seen that. The action scene - the two of them fighting. It’s one of the the high points in the movie.

And the great thing is, he’s a very, very good actor and also, he’s such an accomplished martial artist.

To see them do these fight scenes where he’s stopping his foot like right in front of Milla’s face, over and over again. There’re not many actors I’d trust to do that.

MILLA JOVOVICH

That’s so inspiring actually for me watching Joon Gi preparing and doing these fight sequences because he really has so much control.

He’s such an incredible martial artist and he does everything himself!

For me, I’ve always kind of said, ‘You know, I can do this, I’m good at action, but watching Joon Gi work - I was like, ‘I’ve got to go back to class!’

I use wires to do like jumping, spinning kicks. He does it without anything! I mean, that’s how good he is.

And, really, I’ve so much trust working with him. Obviously, we’d rehearse the fight sequences quite a lot. But, at the same time, it’s very rare that I allow myself to do a fight sequence with another actor. It is very dangerous. But with Joon Gi, I really trusted him.

And we had such a good chemistry and such a great rapport. It was unbelievable to watch him. I‘ve the honour and privilege of working with him in that way.

PAUL ANDERSON

We ended up being very good friends with him. As soon as we got to Korea, he came to see us and he bought us dinner. It is actually wonderful to have a friend like that.

INTERVIEW WITH MILLA AND PAUL

PAUL ANDERSON

I first became aware of LJG - thanks to Youtube!

MILLA JOVOVICH

He’s such an unbelievable martial artist.

PAUL ANDERSON

The fight scene between him and Milla is just so fantastic!

He beats the hell out of her! That doesn’t happen very often in Resident Evil. Usually, it’s the other way round. Milla’s the one who usually beats the hell out of you.

MILLA JOVOVICH

Everything he does himself, with no wires – he’s that good.

LIVE KELLY

TALK SHOW IN AMERICA

MILLA JOVOVICH

Milla Jovovich extols Lee Joon Gi’s multiple talents in ‘Live With Kelly’ (Live Kelly), an American syndicated talk show which is hosted by Kelly Ripa.

Korea was amazing.

PRESS EVENT IN SOUTH KOREA

13.01.17 Press Event

PAUL ANDERSON

As a director of action movies, I’m always looking for the rarest of things. And that’s someone who can play a convincing character, who’s a very strong actor but also who can handle the action. And it is very hard to find – and Milla embodies that - she’s amazing and does all her own stunts.

And when I met Joon Gi and I look at his work – I clearly found somebody who’s a match for Milla. So, I was very, very excited about working with him. And the way, we got him involved in the movie – I sent him a personal letter, saying I’d be honoured to work with him, and Milla and I were fans of his and we’d love for him to be involved in the movie. Honestly, these two made my life easy because they do all their own stuff.

This is a promise – this will not be the last time I work with these two actors because they’re so good together.

Resident Evil began as an independent movie. It was financed and created outside of Hollywood. The first movie had a little South Korean finance in it. It’s about time we paid back. (turns to Lee Joon Gi) ‘I’m glad this time round you got to do it’.

Joon Gi really embraced the role. He gave it everything. And that's   something, as a filmmaker, I totally appreciate, I totally respect. (turns to Lee Joon Gi) And that’s why I would love to work with you again.

We actually asked Joon Gi to stay a little longer because I hadn’t finished filming with him. He was supposed to come back home. And he said, ‘No problem! I’ll stay as long as you want.’ You stayed and showed that extra scene. That level of professionalism I totally appreciate. And these are the kind of people that I want to work with. For me, film making is a big family experience. I’m happy Joon Gi’s part of our family right now.

MILLA JOVOVICH

I’ve always been such a fan of martial arts. I love martial arts films and of course, Taekwondo. It’s something that I love to watch. I like to watch people like Joon Gi who are masters of what they do.

…… we’d so much fun. That’s what I love about making these movies and meeting so many amazing people from different countries. Nothing makes you feel better about travelling than to know that you have friends in the city you’re going to. To be able to call Joon Gi and know that we’ve a friend here – it’s just so amazing. (turns to Lee Joon Gi) I hope you know you have friends in Los Angeles. When you come to town, we’re going to take you out and show you amazing times.
