THE KING AND THE CLOWN (2005)
SELECTED FOR
TOKYO NOMUCOLLE MASTERPIECE FILM FESTIVAL 2019
Lee Joon Gi’s
2005 blockbuster Korean movie, ‘The King and The Clown’, which was directed
by Lee Joon Ik, has been selected to be shown at the Nomucolle
Masterpiece Film Festival (Asian movie section) in Tokyo, Japan on
15 November 2019. It is a golden opportunity for moviegoers to see the digitally
remastered edition of the movie.
The low-budget historical
movie was the highest grossing movie in South Korea’s movie history upon its
release in 2005.
The movie speaks of the ambiguous relationship between King
Yeonsan, a mentally unstable 16th century Joseon king and Gong-gil,
a beautiful, effeminate court jester. Although the royal jester, portrayed by
Lee Joon Gi, derides King Yeonsan, the monarch is impervious to his mockery. Gong-gil
has the king totally in thrall because of his beautiful looks.
