BANGKOK DELIGHT
3
MARCH 2018
Much has been written about the previous Asia ‘Delight’ shows of
the incredibly talented Lee Joon Gi. Seoul. Osaka. Yokohama. Taipei. It was
reported that Lee had his ecstatic male and female audience in collective
hypnotism or screaming hysteria in those concerts. Lee Joon Gi mania. The
scenario in Bangkok was no different.
The Bangkok ‘Delight’ narrative should start with Lee Joon Gi’s
departure from the Incheon International Airport for Bangkok.
As an airport fashion icon and a fashion photographer’s dream, Lee
Joon Gi, has to constantly face the camera flashes. Modelling seems to be a
fixture in Lee’s career landscape. As such, Lee always makes his presence
felt with his effortless supermodel looks, style and fashion. There is always
something interesting to tell about the superstar's fashion and style.
At the Incheon International Airport, Lee wore Viva Studio’s
black single riders leather jacket paired with a white long-sleeve shirt with slim black pants. Lee Joon Gi, the ultimate supermodel, looked absolutely
STUNNING. Oozing style and absolute confidence, Lee did justice to the
clothes he wore; he looked like a million dollars in the outfit. No doubt
about it. No showbusiness artiste can compete with Lee Joon Gi in terms of
style, fashion, confidence and presence.
The eternally youthful multi-hyphenate actor-martial
artist-martial arts coordinator-popstar-model-producer swaggered on his
‘catwalk’, though briefly, from his black Mercedes-Benz Sprinter to the
airport terminal building.
The Asian superstar, known for his unique cum fiery dance
moves, cool vocals and popular hit songs, has always been besieged by his
passionate and loyal fans who flock to the airport to welcome him.
In Bangkok, a regal welcome befitting a king was awaiting Lee
Joon Gi. The most heart-warming gesture by his Thai fans was the Thai
traditional salutation that they gave him.
But that was not all. They not only gave him expensive gifts but also cute souvenirs and bouquets of flowers. What was most astounding but nevertheless very thoughtful was they also provided the 40 members of his team and crew with loads of food, snacks, refreshments and gifts.
It was astonishing that he even recognised a Vietnamese fan.
And, at Suvarnabhumi International Airport on his return flight
to South Korea, he wore clothes that were shockingly different.
The very striking, stylish and colourful check-patchwork shirt that
he wore was unbuttoned. He paired it with a voluminous grey shirt.
His pair of white and black trousers was something quite interesting
altogether. The lazy-style trousers had 6 khaki-coloured pockets. Raggedy tie
bands laced the 4 front pockets.
Lee completed his look with a navy bucket hat. He looked
gorgeous and cool in his outfit.
His alternative fashion style had been inspired by the grunge styles
of the 90s.
Ever the consummate supermodel, Lee Joon Gi spoke with his body; he stood out among the
milling crowds at the airport not only because of his strong supermodel presence
but also his beautiful looks. And what’s more, the panache with which Lee
wore his attention-grabbing, artistic clothes set him apart from other people
or celebrities.
Imagine the ensemble without Lee Joon Gi; it wouldn’t be the
same. Mind you, Lee Joon Gi is a trendsetter. Everything old is new again.
Everything outdated is trendy again. It wouldn’t be surprising if grunge
fashion suddenly becomes all the rage in the East.
Upon arrival at the Incheon International Airport, Lee became
an instant sensation. He caused quite a stir; many people stood and stared.
He had replaced the patchwork shirt with a blue denim jacket.
Some, including a foreigner (whose jaws nearly dropped on
seeing him), were shell-shocked by his latest alternative fashion statement.
Lee Joon Gi’s Bangkok leg of the tour was the most memorable so
far not just because of his unique fashion and style.
The talk of the town was Lee Joon Gi’s close relationship with his family; it has captured the
public imagination so much that it has cemented Lee’s position as Asia’s best
celebrity role model.
Lee Joon Gi introduced his father, who has always been one of his
strongest supporters, to the audience. His kid sister, who is a familiar
presence in his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu activities, also kept him company. It
reflected well on the successful superstar because of the respect and love
shown by Lee to his family.
The Bangkok Delight stop was also significant in that Lee’s ‘power and
influence’ manifested itself in his fans' activities. Though Lee’s Bangkok Delight concert wasn’t much
different from his other 'Delight' concerts in Asia, it rapidly became evident that
there was an invincible and special artiste-fan bond that bound Lee Joon Gi
and his Thai fans together. His fans have parlayed that bond into the
creation of ‘The LJG Southeast Asian Fan Alliance’ in Bangkok.
A metamorphosis in Lee Joon Gi’s fandom has taken place in
Southeast Asia. Lee’s fans from seven Southeast Asian countries – Thailand,
Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, The Philippines, Vietnam and Myanmar have
formed a fan alliance under the leadership of his Thai
fans.
His Thai fan club had even formed a JG Thai Squad to oversee
his fan activities in Thailand.
Each national fan club of the seven-member alliance
collaborated by sending not only their own congratulatory flower stands but
also display stands of their favourite images of their beloved superstar,
including those of Wang So, the Fourth Prince and the image of Lee Joon Gi receiving
Starhub’s ‘Best Male Asian Star’ award in 2018, a prestigious international award.
The founding members of the SEA
LJG-fan Alliance
The fans had unleashed their inner creative spirit in their
joint venture. Solidarity. A united LJG SEA fandom. Something culturally
significant has been superbly conceived and executed.
The change has caught many people by surprise. Welcome to the
world of Lee Joon Gi, Asia’s great influencer who exerts a strong and
enduring influence over his fandom.
Lee Joon Gi, whose fandom spans across Asia, the US, South America, Russia, and the Middle East, is quite the Asian phenomenon. His global
fans have always supported him by organising advertisements for his dramas or
events in shopping centres or subway stations in their own countries or in
South Korea.
The passing years have not dimmed his fans's passion. They have always
shown their ardent support for his concerts by either sending congratulatory
flower stands or doing good works for the community like contributing ‘rice
wreaths’ to the less fortunate. A super united global fandom.
What's the difference between Lee Joon Gi and the other South Korean popstars? Unlike most popstars, Lee is first and foremost an actor. It is Joon Gi’s supercharged charisma and showmanship that are
crucial to his popularity in the pop business.
Another significant difference is the fans who flock to Lee’s concerts range from youngsters or those
in the cusp of adolescence to mature men and ladies. His appeal transcends, not just skin colour but also age. Their
encounters with their beloved superstar, even with the briefest contact, have been
warm, endearing and memorable as Lee Joon Gi’s has been credited with the
most incredible fan service.
The Bangkok Delight concert was a meaningful and memorable
experience for his fans. The delightful experience began as the stage
exploded in hues of red. The audience was
then transported to a world of psychedelic and neon colours. The new and
exciting live stage and lighting designs, live band and Lee's superb vocals, amazing dancing skills and showmanship ensured an evening of pure entertainment and bliss.
Lee Joon Gi caused a flurry of excitement when he spoke to his
fans in Thai. Speaking sweet nothings like ‘I miss you so much’ and ‘I love
you so much’ was enough to tickle his Thai fans’ funny bones.
Magic was in the air. The audience lit up as Lee sang and
strutted across the stage. Demonstrating vigour and skill, Lee really rocked
his audience; he made his songs and music come to life.
Ferocious levitation. Dazzling whirls. Impressive spins. Lightning-fast
kicks. Feverish legwork. Cool Flips. Fiery expressions. Cool stares. Sensual
body moves.
His singing talent, dancing skills and indefatigable energy
created many magical moments. Lee’s dance moves were amazing; his songs
mesmerising. Who knows – a day might come when one of his dance routines or
songs would start a craze in the entertainment world?
To his Thai fan’s great delight, Lee Joon Gi surprised them
with his rendition of a few Thai songs including Finn / ‘Kae Chan Mee Ter’ by Room
39 and Ok Na Ka (Okay) which
was popularised by Katreeya English.

Lee Joon Gi also serenaded his fans with his own repertoire of
hit songs. His voice has been described alternately as ‘Mellifluous’ and ‘Cool’. Many are convinced that Lee Joon Gi sings better than
many so-called ‘popstars’.
So, the question most often asked is: ‘What’s your favourite
Lee Joon Gi song?’ or ‘What are your top five?’ Well, how can you even begin
to rank them? There are so many cherished ones which he sang during the
concert. Fiery Eyes. Together. For Us. Can’t Be Slow. Accepted. Tonight. Lost
Frame. Now. For A While.
Being an exceptional entertainer, Lee Joon Gi, the Asian King
of Dance, is an unreplaceable icon in the hearts and minds of not just his
Thai fans but also his global fans. For his Thai fans, the Bangkok Delight
concert was a lot of fun. It was filled with screams, laughter and tears.
Video Clip made by his fans
At one point, Lee teared up and so did his fans. He was emotional
after watching a fan-created video clip about his 2009 promise that he would
hold a concert in Bangkok. His Thai fans had produced the video clip to
remind him that they had counted the days (3,000 days) until they could meet
him in a concert. But then, he was only able to fulfil his promise this year.
Promise made. Promise broken. Fate played a role. He couldn’t
deliver because of the uncontrollable events in his life. He served his
mandatory military service between 2010 and 2012. When he re-entered the
showbusiness industry, he had to start from scratch.
The fact that his loyal fans had kept track of the time made
him emotional. There was a flicker of sadness and he teared up. It seems that
Lee Joon Gi and his Thai fans have that invincible and special artiste-fan
bond that binds.
The story of Lee Joon Gi and his Thai fans began when he shot
to fame with his movie, The King And The Clown in 2005 but he further
mesmerised his Thai fans when he shot part of his drama ‘Time Between Dog and
Wolf in Thailand in 2007.
In March 2009, he was also in Bangkok for Andre Kim’s Fashion
Fantasia, of which he was the lead model.

Fantasia
And when he launched his ‘Sawasdee
Khrab’ Thailand photobook in September 2009, he promised his Thai fans
that he would be back to do a concert.
At the end of the captivating and fun evening, Lee Joon Gi’s
fans were given a rib-tickling look of Lee Joon Gi laughing on the stage
floor.
Finally, there was the usual concert bow as the Bangkok leg of
Lee’s Asia Delight Tour drew to a close.
His fans did not want him to leave and they didn’t want to
leave. Lee knew then that the punishing round-the-clock practices and
rehearsals have made everything worthwhile.
One should not let the opportunity pass to offer the highest
praise to Lee Joon Gi and his team for his amazing Bangkok ‘Delight’ concert
and the LJG SEA Fan Alliance for their contributions.
