THE SCRIPT READING
The recent
announcement that Lee Joon Gi and Seo Ye Ji would star in tvN’s legal
thriller series, Lawless Lawyer, had sparked instant interest. There has been
a swirl of publicity and excitement since then. A few days ago, when the
photos and information on the script reading event for Lawless Lawyer was released, it prompted another flurry of intense interest and excitement.
The
drama is helmed by the renowned director, Kim Jin-Min, who had worked
with Lee Joon Gi in his hit MBC drama, 'Time Between Dog and Wolf' way back in
2007 and many expect Lawless Lawyer to be also insanely popular - a massive hit. This has brought them a sense of enormous pressure to produce another iconic drama that would make an indelible mark in the industry and the Hallyu world. Lee Joon Gi would also be reunited with Lee
Han-Wi, his co-star in his 2009 drama, Hero. And, interestingly, many of the
cast members are veteran actors, which is another source of excitement.
The
script reading event had been cloaked in secrecy; it had taken place on 28
February 2018 without any fanfare. It
was reported that the lead actor, Lee Joon Gi, and the other cast members
including Seo Ye-Ji, Lee Hye-Young, Choi Min-Soo, Shin Eun-Jung, Yum Hye-Ran,
Lee Dae-Yeon and Lee Han-Wi were at Studio Dragon in Sangamdong, Seoul, South
Korea for the event. Strangely, the cast and production staff had maintained their
silence about the drama.

THE CAST
AND
THE CHARACTERS
Lee Joon
Gi
Nothing
much about the drama has been released to the public. The production team is
close-mouthed but with whatever little information that has been imparted, one can speculate
and try to piece the puzzle together.
The story
is set in a fictional city, Giseong City. One can’t help but have a feeling
that the name sounds a wee bit familiar. Kaesong, the capital of the Goryeo Dynasty. Lee Joon Gi seems to have a special affinity with the name.
The legal
thriller drama revolves around Bong Sang-Pil (Lee Joon Gi), a
gangster-turned-lawyer who seeks justice and revenge for his murdered mother. Bong is assisted in his legal cases by lawyer-turned
paralegal, Ha Jae-Yi (Seo Ye Ji).
Seo Ye Ji
Lee Hye-Young
When he
was young, Bong Sang-Pil had witnessed the murder of Choi Jin-Ae (Shin
Eun-Jung), his legal eagle mother. Choi had stumbled upon some shocking information
that probably pointed to the corruption of the prominent and well-respected female judge, Cha
Moon-Sook (Lee Hye-Young) who has secret ties with a crime syndicate. Judge Cha Moon-Sook, whose reputation is spotless and beyond suspicion, is the judge of the Giseong City district court. The murder has been a nightmare which Bong Sang-Pil could never forget, so he embarks on his perilous
mission to expose those behind the highly organised criminal activities.
Shin Eun-Jung
Lee Ro-Woon and Shin Eun-Jung
Bribes.
Judicial corruption. The judge had probably been working in collusion with Ahn Oh-Joo
(Choi Min-Soo), a crooked small-time gangster-turned-Chairman of a chaebol or large business conglomerate - a blatant conflict of interest.
Choi Min-Soo
Judges are mostly underpaid. And, Judge Cha Moon-Sook is easily corruptible so there are many financial benefits waiting for her. Imagine selling one’s soul to the devil in exchange for a fine home, luxurious properties, stylish clothes, expensive holidays, jewels, gold bars etc.
The fruitful collaboration of the two villains, which reeks of corruption and injustice, must have spanned a great number of years. Probably, much to the dismay of the complainants in the fraudulent cases involving Ahn Oh-Joo, Judge Cha must have, in all those years, ridden roughshod over everybody and ruled unfairly in favour of the ruthless corporate boss.
Yum Hye-Ran
Yeom
Hye-Ran plays Nam Soon-Ja, Judge Cha Moon-Sook’s shady right-hand woman who
is a party to all the judge's corrupt activities. Would Nam Soon-Ja, since she’s in the know about the judge's nefarious activities,
be the informant who would squeal on her boss to save herself in the end?
Lee
Dae-Yeon plays Wu Hyeong-Man, a former detective. Was there a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice when he was accused of killing the Mayor of Giseong City?
Ahn Nae-Sang
An
Nae-Sang plays another gang boss, Choi Dae-Woong, Sang-Pil’s maternal uncle
who could most probably shed some light on his mother’s murder. Though tough and uncouth,
Choi has a warm heart stamped all over him. He is on the same page as Bong
Sang-Pil and would be his greatest ally in his mission to expose the evil doers.
Lee Han-Wi
Lee Han-Wi
plays Ha Gi-Ho, Ha Jae-Yi’s clueless father, who runs a photo studio. Having
worked exclusively for Judge Cha Moon-sook’s family, for whom he has great
respect, Ha Gi-ho would probably be at odds with his daughter. Father and
daughter would probably come to verbal blows at the mention of Judge Cha.
But, in the end, would Ha Gi-ho’s huge supply of photographic evidence bring
Judge Cha to her knees?
The legal thriller drama plot is decidedly exciting and intriguing.
Action. Lee Joon Gi would most certainly demonstrate his newly-acquired Brazilian Jiu Jitsu skills and his other breathtaking martial arts skills in the drama. Lee is a household name for possessing an amazingly diverse martial arts portfolio and being a top-tiered athlete. He has black belts in three Korean martial arts; he had learnt Taekwondo, Taekkyeon and Hapkido when he was young. He has also trained in Thai Kick Boxing, Russian Systema, Chinese Wing Chun, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Parkour. He was the best sharpshooter during his military days. (But, he won't be needing his amazing sword-wielding skills in this modern drama.) No wonder Lee is known to do all his own stunts in his dramas and movies. Chemistry. Bong Sang-Pil and Ha Jae-Yi. Romance. Love is in the air. Chemistry. Many are eagerly looking forward to watch the impassioned chemistry between Lee Joon Gi and Lee Hye-Young, and between Lee Joon Gi and Choi Min-Soo.
Many cannot wait to watch how Bong Sang Pil would work his magic in the courtroom and how he would slug it out with the prosecutors when his nemesis, the sophisticated and extremely competent but unscrupulous Judge Cha Moon-Sook, presides over his court battles.
Lee Joon Gi and Lee Hye-Young
The long wait for the thrilling showdown between Bong Sang Pil, the boy from the slums, and his arch-enemy, Ahn Oh-Joo, the small-time gangster-turned-Chaebol Chairman from the gutter, would also be unbearable.
Lee Joon Gi and Choi Min-Soo

THE
WISH LISTS
OF LEE JOON GI'S FEVERISH FANS
Many of Lee Joon Gi’s feverish fans have been
waiting for Lawless Lawyer for an eternity. They've decided that
they should busy themselves with drawing up lists of
demands…oops, requests – things for their favourite superstar to perform in
the drama.
Drawing up such lists by Lee Joon Gi’s devoted following is nothing new. One of the recent lists includes these requests: Smoulders. Smirks. Crying scenes.
Dancing. Singing.
Wearing leather jackets. Showing
his bare torso.
Lots of humour, laughter and
sweet talk.
But, some requests are bolder and more specific. 3 kissing scenes. 10 fighting scenes. And so on and so forth.
Everyone should join in the
fun.
What about this? Before the transformation. One is curious about Bong Sang-Pil’s appearance before he morphed into a lawyer. A lawyer from the slums? One’s idea of a fun gangster is one with tattoos.
Wouldn’t it be heart-stopping if Bong Sang-Pil could just park one of his tattooed thighs right across the screen (camera) and the camera shot gets up close and personal with that sexy thigh?
It could be Bong Sang-Pil’s secret weapon to induce fainting fits! And drooling. Ladies, even if this wish doesn't come true, you still have to get ready your smelling salts and buckets. |
