Criminal Minds Characters And Their South Korean Counterparts

CRIMINAL MINDS

It was exciting news when the South Korean drama, Criminal Minds and the South Korean cast were unveiled some time ago. The drama garnered global attention as soon as it was known that the gorgeous, multi-talented and world-famous Lee Joon Gi, the lead actor with the special South Korean charm and Midas Touch, would drive the police procedural crime drama. Although Lee Joon Gi is new to the crime procedural genre, it is a bold move on his part to take on such a project. But hopes fly high. If predictions are correct, Fortune should favour the bold.

THE FBI PROFILERS

Criminal Minds, an action / suspense thriller, is based on the Behavioural Analysis Unit (BAU) whose elite squad of FBI profilers or ‘mind hunters’ studies and analyses the nation's most dangerous criminals, the unsubs (unknown subjects).  Each profiler has his own specialty or expertise, and together, the profilers delve into the criminal’s behaviour or psyche, and through behavioural profiling, the team can accurately predict the criminal’s next move.

Who are the criminals? The drama covers the whole spectrum of psychos, and not just serial killers: snipers, maniacal stalkers, mad bombers, terrorists, professional hitmen, arsonists, rapists, paedophiles, demented people, cult murderers, mob bosses, and so on.

The profilers are assisted by a resident computer hacker who provides invaluable information which inevitably leads to the capture or the killing of the psychos.  The profilers’ work, being psychologically and physically demanding cum time-consuming, inevitably exacts a punitive toll on the personal lives of the profilers.

The profilers seem like superheroes but the back story of each of the profilers lends them a human touch. Although a dark and haunting trauma in their past render them vulnerable, the team’s camaraderie and support for each other salve their emotional wounds.

One unique and meaningful aspect of the serious drama is its specially chosen quotes that give the viewers insights into life and what it is all about. Each episode is favoured with at least one quote which may well lead viewers to some soul-searching.

CRIMINAL MINDS CHARACTERS
AND
THEIR KOREAN COUNTERPARTS

The dearth of information has compelled a gaggle of impatient fans to do some sleuthing work themselves to piece things together and guess the South Korean counterparts of the original Criminal Minds characters. Some have lamented that the production staff of Criminal Minds Korea have not made the wait easy. Although some people have been teasing the public with some nuggets of information, the secrecy surrounding the drama production is well preserved.

It is not easy to figure out the intriguing points of difference between Criminal Minds and Criminal Minds Korea, particularly, in terms of the choice of thespians for the specific characters. The cast boasts of some very accomplished, interesting and good-looking thespians.

Hordes of enthusiastic fans have been shadowing Lee Joon Gi at the shooting sites. Images on the drama had been leaked recently. After studying some of them, one’s perception of the drama casting would have changed.

It seems that Hyun Joon (Lee Joon Gi) had a sweetheart from his younger days. She is played by Park Si Eun.

Kang Yi Seok plays the younger version of Hyun Joon (Lee Joon Gi)

Based on the fans’ images of a young boy playing with Hyun Joon, one might speculate that he is Hyun Joon’s son. If so, would Lee Joon Gi be playing Aaron Hotchner? The viewers would be in for a pleasant surprise if this is true.

Aaron Hotchner’s backstory is that he fell in love with his wife while they were in high school. The romance led to marriage when they became adults and the union produced a son. Due to his workaholic attitude, they divorced and later, his ex-wife was killed by a criminal.

But could it be possible that Lee Joon Gi might be playing a composite character? Maybe, a composite of Derek Morgan and Aaron Hotchner? If so, he would be breathtakingly and incredibly interesting. The megastar, Lee Joon Gi, would be able to show a different edge, a potent angst and melancholy that Derek Morgan alone might not be able to convey.

THE CHARACTERS
of
CRIMINAL MINDS

DEREK MORGAN
SHEMAR MOORE

Shemar Moore (Derek Morgan)

Derek Morgan has a confident, assertive and charming personality. He is athletic, intelligent, extroverted, socially outgoing and passionate.

DARK AND TROUBLED PAST

Like the rest of the BAU team, he has a dark and traumatic past. After his father’s death at the age of ten, he went out of control. As a juvenile offender, he was placed under the guidance of a local youth centre coordinator, Carl Buford. With Buford’s help, he obtained a college football scholarship but what was most painful was that the man sexually abused him.

 BRAINS AND BRAWN

Morgan went to North-western University on a football scholarship.

Of all the profilers, he is the most athletic, strongest and toughest in the team and the one who kicks down doors.

He holds a black belt in judo and conducts FBI self-defence classes.

He had served in a bomb squad unit.

He used to be a Chicago police officer before he joined the BAU.

He specialises in obsessional crimes.

Although he is the best fighter of the group, he is as highly intelligent as any of them. He is not just muscle – he is the one in the BAU team with the brains as well as the brawn.

Morgan is the team’s second in command but he was promoted to Unit Chief in Season Five.

FASHION STYLES

In the first season, Morgan dressed in suits and other professional attire and later, his style of clothing became casual. When it is sunny weather, Morgan wears his shades.

UNDERSTANDING THE UNSUB

Morgan lives by the code ‘To Know Him, I Must Become Him’ in order to understand the twisted mind of the criminal or unsub (unknown subject).

PROTECTIVE INSTINCTS

Having been a fighter against criminals, he has the tendency to act like a protective brother to Penelope Garcia and Spencer Reid.

Garcia is the only woman in BAU with whom he is playful and flirty. Conducting an ongoing risqué banter with her, he uses a slew of pet names for her: ‘Hot Stuf’f, ‘Woman’, ‘Mama’, ‘Sweetnness’ ‘Princess’, ‘Sweet Lady’ ‘Doll Face’ etc. ‘Baby Girl’ is his favourite name for her. Their relationship is special but platonic. The presence of females in his family life – his mother, his three sisters, his aunt and cousin explains his unusual relationship with Garcia.

Morgan is also a big brother to the nerdy Dr. Spencer Reid. He calls Reid 'Genius', 'Kid', 'Pretty Boy' etc. Watching them, one can feel bromance in the air.

Morgan resigned from the BAU to take care of his family.

AARON HOTCHNER
THOMAS GIBSON

WORK EXPERIENCE

Aaron Hotchner was formerly a public prosecutor and that means he has a law degree. He used to work in the FBI field office in Seattle.

COLD AND UNSMILING

Aaron Hotchner has a cold, serious and grim demeanour, and he rarely smiles throughout the drama. There are two reasons for it – the twin evils of a brutal and violent father, and the savage murder of his ex-wife, the only woman he had ever loved.

DARK AND TROUBLED PAST

Though it is not fully disclosed, it is said that the physical and mental abuse that Hotchner experienced under his monstrous father led him to catch serial killers.

Hotchner met his wife, Haley, in high school. Although he loved his wife very much, Hotchner was married to his job. The punishing hours of his job deprived him of a family life and it led to his divorce.

At the beginning of Season 3, Haley wanted him to return to a desk job so he could have more time for her and their son. When his wife gave him an ultimatum: Her or BAU, Hotchner chose BAU, so Haley filed for divorce.

Later, the darkness of Haley’s murder by ‘The Reaper’ tainted the many wonderful memories of his marriage and his family.

MEDIA LIAISON OFFICER

When Jennifer Jareau was promoted to a position in the Pentagon, Hotchner  and Garcia replaced her as the media liaison officer. Even when JJ returned to the BAU as a profiler, he retained that position.

JASON GIDEON
MANDY PATINKIN

Jason Gideon was one of the BAU's best profilers.

CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH REID

Having hand-picked Reid from the FBI Academy for his team of profilers, Gideon acted like a mentor and father figure to him and they shared a very close relationship.

Even though Spencer Reid is a genius, Gideon seemed to have beaten Reid many times at chess.

DARK AND TROUBLED PAST

In the past, Gideon had a nervous breakdown after being heavily criticized for making a fatal decision of sending six of his agents to their deaths in Boston. A bomb exploded in the warehouse that they had entered.

Being the Unit Chief, Hotchner had to assess whether Gideon was a risk to the BAU.

In another incident, Gideon lost faith in his abilities when his decision to release an unsub resulted in the deaths of both the unsub and a young woman.

DEATH

Gideon was murdered off-screen, having been shot dead at a close range by a serial killer.

DAVID ROSSI
JOE MANTEGNA

WORK EXPERIENCE

David Rossi, the best friend of Jason Gideon, had served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in the Vietnam War and during his military service, Rossi received several awards.

THE FOUNDING OF THE BAU

After being recruited by the FBI, Rossi played a part in the founding of the BAU. However, the profiler went into early retirement to write books. For nearly ten years he went on the lecture and book-tour circuit.

TROUBLED PAST
Rossi had been married and divorced three times.

RETURN TO THE BAU
When Rossi returned to the BAU, he became the glue that held the team together. After Jason Gideon left the BAU, he took over as confidant and adviser to the team members. Being adept at delving into the minds of criminals, he and Hotchner operated in tandem on  developing their profiles.

ELLE GREENAWAY
LOLA GLAUDINI

Lola Glaudini as Elle Greenaway

WORK EXPERIENCE

Elle Greenaway, an expert in sexual offence crimes, was assigned to the BAU to assist the profilers. She formerly worked in the FBI Field Office in Seattle.

TROUBLED PAST

Greenaway’s father, a police officer, was killed in the line of duty. It was a fatality that troubled her.

When Greenaway was shot by an unsub, she was left with psychological scars. In Season Two, those scars caused her to be unreasonably irrational in a case involving a serial rapist, whom she killed. The rapist had, with blood from her wound, written something on the wall.

Although Greenaway resigned for having killed the serial rapist, she claimed that she had acted solely in self-defence and therefore, was ‘not guilty’.

EMILY PRENTISS
PAGET BREWSTER

Paget Brewster as Emily Prentiss

WORK EXPERIENCE

Emily Prentiss joined the team two episodes after Elle Greenaway resigned from the FBI for good. She is a graduate of Yale and has been working for the FBI for less than ten years.

SEASONED TRAVELLER

As a child, Prentiss had travelled a lot due to her mother's diplomatic background. Having lived in several middle eastern countries, she could speak fluent Arabic. She also speaks fluent Spanish, French, and Italian and some Russian.

She is better at chess than Reid.

TROUBLED PAST

A high school photo of Emily Prentiss, found by Penelope

As a teenager in Rome, she got pregnant but had an abortion. It was revealed by Garcia that Prentiss was a goth when she was in high school. Imagine black clothing, dark eyeliner, black finger nails and dyed black hair.

Prentiss had implied to Hotchner that as an adolescent she smoked in rebellion against her parents’ authority.

PERSONALITY

Prentiss is a very level-headed, calm, highly intelligent and driven person but she has a very sarcastic sense of humour.

She is willing to put herself at risk to protect others and sometimes, in certain cases, she seems more professional than some other members of the BAU.

When Hotchner resigned from the FBI, he named Prentiss his successor as BAU Unit Chief.

PENELOPE GARCIA
KIRSTEN VANGSNESS

Kirsten Vangsness as Penelope Garcia

Penelope Garcia is the BAU’s Technical Analyst at its headquarters in Quantico, Virginia. Penelope lost both of her parents at the age of 18.

PERSONALITY

She is flamboyant, outgoing and fun-loving and provides the rest of the team with comic relief whenever it is needed. She and Morgan share a very friendly-flirty relationship but it never got beyond that.

HACKING SKILLS

Penelope taught herself to hack computers after she dropped out of college. She was grouped with the best hackers in the world and was considered a criminal.

After being caught hacking the FBI's database, she was recruited by the FBI. She was given the ultimatum: Either Prison or work for BAU, an arm of the FBI. She is one of the most dangerous hackers in the world.

JENNIFER JAREAU
A. J. COOK

A. J. Cook as Jennifer Jareau

MEDIA LIAISON OFFICER

Jennifer Jareau (JJ) was the team's original Liaison Officer with the media and local police agencies. Her role was to handle the public, and also to manipulate the media in order to trap the criminals.

TROUBLED PAST

Jareau’s older sister committed suicide at a very young age, and in remembrance of her sister, she always wore the necklace her sister had given her.

In Season Six, when JJ was forced to take a promotion at the Pentagon, Garcia and Hotchner took up her responsibilities as media liaison officers.

SPENCER REID
MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER

Matthew Gray Gubler (Spencer Reid)

BRAINY BUT NOT ATHLETIC

Spencer Reid is a genius. He claims to have an eidetic or photographic memory and an IQ of 187. He can read 20,000 words per minute.

He is almost always introduced as Dr. Reid. It has been revealed that he holds PhDs in three fields: Mathematics, Chemistry, and Engineering, and has BAs in Psychology and Sociology.

He is not good at athletics and had failed his physical training and marksmanship tests.

He is socially awkward and comes across like a real nervous geek.

TROUBLED LIFE

Reid has a difficult yet loving relationship with his mother who suffers from schizophrenia. He fears that he could suffer from it as well in the future.

NICKNAMES

He has been given nicknames like ‘Genius’, Kid, ‘Pretty Boy’ by Morgan, and Garcia calls him ‘Gorgeous Grey Matter’. Jennifer Jareau is the only one who calls him ‘Spence’.

HYUN JOON
THE ULITMATE PROFILER

Guesswork can be tedious. Let July come earlier so that we can find out about the characters of the drama.

Meanwhile, let’s imagine Hyun Joon (Lee Joon Gi) as a combination of Derek Morgan and Aaron Hotchner: Intelligent, Handsome, Sexy, Athletic, Multi-talented, Passionate, Serious yet Naughty and Playful. And much more. But, how about throwing in James Bond, Tarzan, Superman and Spiderman as well? Even if that amalgamation is impossible, the drama, with Lee Joon Gi’s screen presence, will still raise the tension and excitement so high that it would leave MEN and women hanging at the edge of their seats! Lee Joon Gi is passionate about his art and work and the drama will flaunt a truly great performance. The tenor of his dramas is always heated up to such a hot temperature that one can bet one’s bottom dollar that just the very presence of the multi-talented, handsome and sexy heartthrob in the suspense thriller would drive the female viewers crazy on an unprecedented scale!
