Sangsang Madang Cinema will celebrate the 20th Anniversary of The King and The Clown, South Korea’s landmark film which is considered to be the best in Korean Cinema history. The cinema and the audience will pay tribute to the genius director, Lee Joon Ik, and the legendary leading actor, Lee Joon Gi, who stars as Gong Gil, the beautiful and effeminate clown who attracts the eyes of the 15th century King Yeonsan in the film. The audience will be given the opportunity to listen to and communicate with the two Korean film industry giants.
The King and The Clown, the
greatest film of all time, is a story that defined a generation. Honoured as a
cinematic icon by the film industry, the public screening in the theatre
acknowledges the importance of the globally famous film.
Global fans wonder whether
the iconic film would be re-aired on South Korean national TV or screened
abroad to promote Korean national culture. A proclamation to recognise its
contribution to national or global culture would be great. Producing a commemorative
stamp or coin featuring iconic imagery from the film as part of South Korea’s
cultural heritage would be meaningful. Perhaps an exhibition about the
production, film legacy and influence should also be launched. Cosplay contests and fan art
competitions could be held to remind the younger generation of the history of
the iconic film.
The special 20th anniversary event will be held at 14:00 on 21 June 2025.
